Found an interesting tip for food safety--sounds like a great idea.

If you are leaving, freeze a cup of water and after it is frozen lay a penny on top. When you return you'll know if your freezer thawed, or not.

I just want to add to this... whether you leave or not. Turn up your freezer and fridge settings to the coldest settings. Have a cooler with ice and drinks so you aren't opening the freezer/fridge...unless you have the in the door ice/water.

If you have a deep freezer make sure it is full. If it is a chest freezer place newspaper on top and frozen water bottles or ice packs with meat at the bottom. You can also place blankets over the outside of it so if the power goes out it will work to insulate it.

I notice that central Florida has a lot of lakes and waterways. Do I take it that in the event of very heavy rainfall there's a serious risk of flooding from them overflowing?

I live three streets from the ocean in north central Florida. As a Florida native, hurricanes have never bothered me. But I have a really bad feeling and I've been crying a lot today. I've gotten together the important stuff, my husband and I are retired. The question is when to leave...also taking our cat of course. Going to my daughters in Mississippi, nine hour drive. It's hard to look at your home and picture none of it there when you come back. My heart is broken for the people in Texas. I also feel petty knowing the only really important thing is our lives. My husband is 75 and I worry about him.

You are at the top of my prayers today, chin up, take it slowly, and pet the cat every time you feel stressed.

French officials said Thursday morning that rescue workers were just beginning to assess the damage on the islands of St. Martin and St. Barthélemy.

“The destruction is massive,” Mr. Collomb said, noting that schools had almost all been destroyed. “By chance, the airport in the north, the French airport, has not been hit too much, so we are going to be able to land helicopters and then planes,” he said. The southern airport, in the Dutch part of the island, was more severely hit, he added.

Mr. Collomb said that the French authorities were sending barges filled with water and 100,000 French Army rations to the two islands, enough to sustain the populations there for four days.

He said that one of the main priorities was to restore electricity, to bring back the desalination plant that provides the island with drinkable water, and to get phone networks back online.

Daniel Gibbs, the president of the French territorial council on St. Martin, said that “95 percent of the island is destroyed.”

Asked what the island needed, Mr. Gibbs said “everything” and noted that another storm, Hurricane Jose, was expected soon after Irma.

I don’t recall who posted this website, and I just wanted to say THANKS.
The hurricane images are both beautiful and scary.
Click “Wind speed” or “Wind gusts”. Those images are particularly mesmerizing.
:gthanks:

Gnat.... has your daughter gotten back to Jersey? And is her son still in Casselberry?

My "sister" (haaaa, she'd LOVE to hear someone say I'm as old as her mother!) is safely back in NJ, but she left her husband there in Casselberry with their son, who just graduated from college. He hasn't answered my message yet this morning, but the storm is still far away for the time being. He's there with my brother-in-law and his two roommates, so I guess with 4 big boys, they should be able to handle things ok. At least my sister got out of there. Thank you for asking!!!

OH MY :gasp: the interstates are full of evacuees!

I'm  that lots of folks heard the Governor in Texas say the reason they didn't call for evacuation was it was too many to evacuate, and he didn't want foks stuck on the interstates, without gas, when the storm hit.

So Floridians are doing it on their own. The major interstates in Florida are really affected now, and it's up to Valdosta Georgia. I'll check gasbuddy.com, but I heard yesterday that Tifton Gorgia gas stations were out of gas (they have time to replenish, but eeeeks)

Motorists headed north of Key Largo, Fla., on US 1, in anticipation of Hurricane Irma.

Here's an idea (never thought of this one):

0d3252e7912d4d42ba8cf811a518f968-0d3252e7912d4d42ba8cf811a518f968-0.jpg

[This woman] tossed pool furniture in the pool so it won't fly around during the impending hurricane.

more photos: https://www.bostonglobe.com/2017/09...ricane-irma/6AhRgOA7dlLym1LkqhrtFK/story.html

That is how we did it everytime- it was fun to throw furniture in the pool and not get in troulbe!!! Everyone did it that way back then .
Everyone also masking taped their windows!
and there was always one window I dont remember how this was figured out where a window was left cracked - it was suppossed to keep your roof from blowing off!

Also yesterday guy said in term of long/lat were hoping for the turn (determines everyones fate) 77 78 degrees is good
80 not. Henry is organzed and wanted him to know this he would be great at capturing what the exact turn is that is huge!

same could be said on either side of those numbers ........................

I really like this explanation its concrete in terms of what then happens.

The storm is bigger than the entire state.

Am not caught up hoping there is something from Taste coming up.

I start at the top of the threads - not trying to find out where I left off on any of them!!

Obviously a direct in landfall where that happens is horrid while at the same time if it pulls a mathew it stays over water which just aint good

does anyone know why on tweets it repeats it underneath the actual tweet?

:seeya:

Yes, because many of us, when we use our phones with tapatalk, we cannot see the embedded tweets and it makes us :pullhair: on phones so folks know this, and are kind enough to cut/paste the embedded tweets for others ease.

Mandatory Key West Evacuation Plan:

Key West Transit will begin hurricane evacuation service at noon Thursday. Buses will be clearly marked “hurricane evacuation” on the destination boards. They will circulate throughout the city, picking up riders at regular bus stops. Riders will be transferred at the Transit Center on Stock Island, and the buses will proceed to the hurricane shelter at FIU, picking up riders along the Lower Keys Shuttle route.

Evacuees are asked to go to the nearest bus stop, or the Transit Center on College Road. Pickups will continue throughout the afternoon Thursday and resume at 6 a.m. on Friday. Weapons and alcohol are prohibited on the buses.

Regular bus service – Citywide, the Duval Loop and the Lower Keys Shuttle – will end at midnight Wednesday, September 6th.
