Chemical fire billows near Lake Charles in Hurricane Laura’s wake

A large chemical fire has sent a dangerous cloud over Lake Charles, Louisiana, hours after the eye of Hurricane Laura passed directly over the city. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards says the fire was burning Thursday morning just outside the city, and he’s advising storm survivors to shelter in place.

Edwards tweeted that people “in the Westlake/Moss Bluff/Sulphur area” should close their windows and doors and turn off their air conditioning units.

THanks wind rain leaves but DT left in a huff bc I wanted wine so he’s at his brothers House 1 hour away. Yea he left me just before a cat 4 was barreling towards us. We live 1/2 hour from Lake Charles. All animals ok

Lemme at DT! :slapfight:

Heck, I needed wine and I'm following virtually. I so sorry you had to go through that, and hope that all the furbabies comforted you and vice versa.

... Police spotted a floating casino that got loose and crunched against a bridge. But hours after landfall, the wind and rain were still blowing too hard to check for survivors. ...

“There are some people still in town and people are calling … but there ain’t no way to get to them,” Tony Guillory, president of the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, said early Thursday morning over the phone. ... Guillory said he hopes stranded people can be rescued later Thursday but fears that blocked roads, downed power lines and flooding could get in the way.

I'm glad that man sitting on the porch of his badly damaged house seems OK, and at least two of his cats do too. :)

The fire moved Gov. John Bel Edwards to urge residents to take shelter, turn off air conditioning units and await instructions from officials. Details about precisely what was burning, and whether it related to the storm, weren't immediately available.

A lot of that area is without power - can you image no air conditioning and having to keep your windows closed?
85 degrees real feel 94
70% humidity

We are ok, just wind, some rain, we’ll a lot all day, branches and a ton of leaves. Which DT can pick up whenever he comes back. He left me @6 to go to his brother’s 1 hour away East. Thanks to everyone for your concerns

Sooooo glad to hear you’re OK @Tony1902. I’m not so sure your hubby will be OK when he gets home! Your two dogs will have to make room in their dog house!

I would bet money some developer will offer buyouts and effectively eliminate the lower income families.

Louisiana's 'Cajun Riviera' in shambles from Hurricane Laura

Hurricane Laura laid waste to the place, a low-cost paradise for oil industry workers, families and retirees, and it could be awhile before the good times roll again. Resident Robert Eggert hardly recognized Holly Beach, the area’s official name, after he came back Thursday to check the damage

Laura just will not die....

https://www.accuweather.com/en/hurr...ook&utm_medium=news_tab&utm_content=algorithm

Laura will bring damaging winds, flash flooding and perhaps isolated tornadoes to the Central states as far to the north as part of the Ohio Valley into Friday night. The storm could then produce drenching rain and the risk of isolated tornadoes to some areas of the Northeast during the weekend.

The circulation center of Laura will continue to unwind as the system turns eastward and accelerates; however, enough energy may remain to continue to cause trouble from the southern Appalachians Friday night to central and eastern North Carolina, eastern Virginia, central and southeastern Maryland, Delaware, southern New Jersey and perhaps southeastern Pennsylvania during Saturday and Saturday evening.
