Hurricane Wilma - Storm Upgraded

I've wanted to live somewhere in Florida near the coast for a while. I applied for a job in Pa. once. I went there in July and I was amazed because I was able to wear a long-sleeved shirt at night. No way can that happen in Texas in July!! I didn't get the job; was a little relieved about it. I have no stamina for the cold.

Trust me, that long sleeved shirt night, during the summer in PA, was a rarity. I can remember so many nights when I lay there in bed perspiring, praying for a thunderstorm to immediately cool things down. That is one of the reasons I left there and came to CA--we wear jackets at night during the summer, and use covers about 355 out of 365 nights of the year. The San Francisco Bay provides air conditioning, and the major benefit here, is there is relatively low humidity, as compared to PA.

Wow. And I thought the long sleeves were a sign of the cold! I have a friend in N. Cal. and she loves it. Mainly the weather. I've never been but San Fran is on my list of obviously cool places I must visit someday. Alas, it's a long list.

I was just going to suggest that she get away from the coast redeskimo--much too dangerous for her to stay there. Nice to know that she cares that much about her animals; I know I wouldn't leave without mine either. Hopefully she will be out of harm's way. Looks like late Sunday night, the Florida Coast should start getting the beginning of the high winds.

From the news: If it hits Florida as a Category 2 hurricane, the state's gulf coast could see a 12- to 14-foot storm surge. If it strengthens to a Category 3, that surge could be 17 feet, forecasters said.

Amazing! That eye is getting huge, and it is headed dead-eye for the Keys.

Now I'm worried about Alpha, which we can see a part of off to the right I think, running up the east coast in tandem with Wilma. Poor NYCity if they last that long. Can you imagine that?

I told her to leave, but....
Her in-laws live on the beach there in Naples, on the 14th floor of an oceanfront condo. She and her soon to be ex-husband are staying at their house 4 miles inland. I can't believe it. She just flew back to her house today, and said the Ft. Myers airport was emptying. She didn't even have to pay for her parking! Nobody was there to take her $. That was around 1:30 this afternoon. They have hurricane shutters, those huge gallons of water, and a generator. Still...I would have stayed in Chicago. Not much to rush back for, since the a**hole BIL can't wait for the divorce. I wouldn't want to stay in the same house, but for tax reasons, they won't finalize until the first of the new year. At least she has charged her cell phone. I, myself rode out Opal. It was scary. Never again!

SS, my friend in Vero Beach called me and said her one son who lives in the Keys (RamRod Key) is again riding it out........he damn near lost his vitage Chris-Craft last time.

Then her daugter called from Miami and told her that grand-daughter who lives in Naples is also saying she's staying there as her place is supposedly new and Hurricane sound!:(

Wilma's landfall should be around sunrise tomorrow near Naples with pressure readings similar to a category 3 storm although the winds may not be that high. The wind field will be spread out so the Keys and areas from the hurricane track south and east will receive the strongest wind gusts...over 100 mph. Winds north of the center to Tampa will gust to 60 mph with gusts to hurricane force as far north as Vero Beach. Gales will howl along the East Coast to Wilmington NC. Heavy rain of 3-6 inches will occur across central and south Florida Sunday night and Monday with a few locally higher amounts. Winds from the Outer Banks to Long Island, New York Monday night and Tuesday can reach 60 mph in gusts with flooding rains expected. The hurricane itself stays out at sea and becomes the eastern focal point of the large ellipse of low pressure Tuesday night. The winds in the coastal waters of New England will mount to sustained storm force with gusts to hurricane force and seas should rise to near 30 feet. Windswept rains of 1-3 inches should cover much of New Jersey and southeast New York with 3-6 inch amounts in southeast New England. Snows will break out Tuesday in the high grounds from northeast Pennsylvania to central New England.

You cant make this stuff up.

As for Alpha, the system's overall cloud structure has maintained itself after moving over the island of Hispaniola and should the low level circulation redevelop, a quick intensification to a 60 mph storm is possible by Monday afternoon. Alpha should be located ahead of Wilma by Monday night but probably will become part of one system farther north in the Atlantic.

Charlotte/Sarasota area is started getting rain earlier today and a bit of wind now and again, but nothing too severe as of yet. We're keeping our eyes open on weather reports and watching out for tornadoes.
