My parents live in South Miami and at 10 am the winds were over 100 mph. Their power was out (got Dad on his cell) and the wind was rocking the motor home which was parked in the drive way. Dad said that one of the neighbors had lost their awning and it was in my parents pool. Haven't heard from them since then, but I'm assuming they are okay. Cell service is out in the area now.

My co-workers, brother and sister in law are in Cancun. Have been there over 2 weeks now. They have a timeshare there, they were hoping for a nice restful vacation. And they got stuck in the hurricane. My co-worker told me today, that her SIL emailed her neice, a goodbye letter. And told her to tell everyone that she might not make it home, and to tell everyone she loved them. She was that scared! I guess she was scared sh*tless. I know I would have been scared to death also.

I'm sure it was terrifying. I'm assuming everyone is ok and you all have had contact with everyone? I sure hope so! Hope they have a safe trip home and can get home soon!

Hang on , I have friends in the area....I just talked to her and she said power and phones are out in a lot of areas and that cell phone service is limited. Just remember that if they only have cordless phones in the house, then they won't get calls when the power is out. Hang in there:p

Looks like they got hit pretty bad. But your son is probably out getting the things he needs and checking out the news before he calls you.
Hope this helps.

Hi Concerned :)

Your son was most likely "laid back & nonchalant" about Wilma because the Orlando area was basically spared this time.

Actually, from my perspective - yesterday's weather here in the Orlando vicinity (Orange & Seminole Counties) was a refreshing change. We went from a summer of hot sticky temps & suffocating humidity to a delightful cool front that allowed us to finally turn off the A/C & open up our homes for the 1st time in over 4 months. Went from the high 80's & 90 degrees to the mid 60's with low humidity right after the storm passed.

Yes, we had some windy weather (39-45 mph sustained) and about 4 inches of rain but we didn't really get the hurricane like the Keys & both coasts in South Florida. For the most part - we were spared the destructive wrath & flooding.

By 1:45 pm yesterday afternoon - the sun was shining, the air was cool & delightfully breezy. Just a truly gorgeous fall day! One would never have guessed the stiffling temps, humidity & fierce storms of the previous 6-8 hours. Last night - our temps dropped from daytime 60's to 47 degrees - the very best sleeping weather in months!! We're not expecting the thermometer to hit 79-80 again until next Monday (Halloween). :woohoo: I'm absolutely lovin' this weather!!!

One thing I have to say ... I am so grateful to live in a state with a governor that has his act together and "knows what to do before, during & after an emergency".

FL Gov. Jeb Bush's handling of this hurricane, Florida's early portion of Katrina, & the 4 others we experienced last year that impacted so many of us Fla residents (me included!) - is like a day & night comparison to the performance of Louisiana Gov. Blanco .. and knucklehead Nagin.

IMO - Florida is blessed to have Gov. Bush at the helm. You couldn't pay me to live in New Orleans or anywhere else in Louisiana. For the sake of all Louisianans - I sure hope the voters there retain their respective memorys - and make their ballots count on election day.

Anyone heard from Amraann down in Key Largo - and our other WS Floridians? Does anyone need help?

My heartfelt prayers are with all those impacted by Wilma's wrath. We were very lucky & fortunate here in Central Fla.

Edited to add:
Concerned - I'm so glad you reached & spoke with your son. After I read your initial post - I was going to suggest that I would be glad to go by & check on his safety for you - if you were still "concerned". :)
