A Scott County jury took about two-and-a-half hours Thursday to convict Zachary Connell of first-degree murder and child endangerment resulting in death in connection with the death of his girlfriend's 3-year-old son.

A jury found Zachary Connell guilty of first-degree murder in January, and a Scott County District judge sentenced him Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole...

Addison was at preschool the morning of Oct. 12, 2010. Connell was called to pick up the child early because Johnson saw that he was ill. Specifically, she testified that Addison appeared “extremely thin” and his abdomen was “extremely hard.”

Johnson testified that when Connell picked him up, he poked Addison in the abdomen and told her he had been trying “to toughen up” the child. She advised him to take Addison to a doctor. Connell didn’t take Addison to a doctor. The child died hours later.
