Dubuque Woman Considered “Missing” After Abandoning Car on Bridge
Allison-Morgan-188x300.jpg

The identity of a woman who abandoned her car on the Julien Dubuque Bridge on New Year’s Eve had been released, but police say they’re no closer to knowing what happened to her. East Dubuque Police say the car had been driven by 19-year-old Allison Morgan of Dubuque.

O'Connell said Morgan's last known communication was a text message to a friend at about 7:50 p.m.

Regarding the content of the text messages, O'Connell only would say that "she talked about seeing somebody."

After the abandoned car was found on the bridge linking Dubuque and East Dubuque on Saturday night, a helicopter was called in to search the area. O'Connell said the helicopter spent about 15 minutes checking below the bridge and along the shorelines.

Dubuque police also are involved in the investigation. Lt. Mike Schmidt said Dubuque officers interviewed Morgan's ex-boyfriend Saturday night after the abandoned car was found.

"We talked with the (ex-boyfriend), but he wasn't very forthcoming," Schmidt said.

very scary ... where on the bridge did it say her car was abandoned? Looking on google maps, it's a small two lane bridge with a chain link fence on one side, and open to water on the other .. ex boyfriend not being very "forthcoming" sounds suspicious to me ...

East Dubuque Police now believe the woman who abandoned her car on the Julien Dubuque Bridge on New Year’s Eve jumped from the bridge. In a release sent out this morning, police say they have heard from two witnesses who were on the bridge at the same time as 19-year-old Allison Morgan of Dubuque. Those witnesses saw Morgan stop her car, get out of the vehicle, walk to the north bridge rail, climb over the edge, and then disappear. Police indicate that they are still accepting any new information about the case and ask anyone with additional information to come forward. The East Dubuque Fire Department has been brought into the investigation to help with recovery efforts. However, no efforts are currently underway due to ice cover and weather conditions.

Am I missing something? Did these "witnesses" wait 3-4 days before reporting they saw a woman jump off a bridge?!

Not sure if they waited 3-4 days to report it or if it took 3-4 days for the news outlets to update the article. Haven't seen any updates yet if she has been found.

The "Dubuque in Pursuit" Facebook page has a few posts on this case with lots of comments, including some from Ali's sister. Apparently this was initially reported as a car accident and then updated upon further investigation. Here is some information from one of the Facebook posts:

A car was abandoned on the bridge on the East Dubuque side around 8 pm according to dispatch, The owner of the car had suicidal tendencies.Jo Davis requested Air care 3 to conduct search south of the bridge for the female subject around 9 pm. Air care 3 called off search at 9:15 pm
No info if she has been located yet. Follow Dubuque In Pursuit for breaking information.

With that and the witness reports in mind, it sounds like she jumped. It sounds like they searched for her from 9:00-9:15, about one hour after she went missing. That was probably her best chance of being found.

They searched for her for 15 minutes? That's , ehm, kind of unusually short?

And then they searched no more?

I'm a bit flummoxed. Either the reporting is shoddy or I don't know what.

Cost was mentioned in one of the Facebook posts and Dubuque is a small city (around 58,000 people or so). From the wording in some of the articles, they aren't doing more searching due to the river being partially frozen. Not sure how active the river would be in those conditions.

It's a sad situation all around. My heart goes out to the family and friends. It's looking quite grim.

Allison “Ali” Marie Morgan, 19 years old, born on 5/15/97 and gone to Heaven 12/31/16. She lived with her parents, Linda Fuerst (mother) and Steven Fuerst (stepfather). Ali was the middle child between older brother Reece Morgan (25), Rachel Morgan (22), younger brother ZacharyMorgan (18) and Ellyse Fuerst (9). Ali was loved by all but had a beautifully special bond with Ellyse. Ali attended Tri-State Christian School. Ali loved horses, spending time with friends, and sketching. Ali’s struggles with depression were far greater than any of us understood. Every day she worked hard to keep it together and do the right thing. She cared about others and offered help. Her daily battles wore her down and often left her exhausted. In an overwhelming and desperate move to stop the pain, Ali made her final decision. Her family believes Jesus, our Savior, caught Ali that cold night and took her to heaven. She now has the peace she so desperately wanted and her pain is gone. Those who love Ali now share in the pain of losing her. Please join the family on Saturday, January 14, 2017 from 11:00 am -3:00 pm, at DubuqueCommunity Church, 3490 Keystone Drive, for a time of remembering Ali and helping all to begin the process of healing. The time for condolences will be followed by a service at 3:00 pm. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations can be made in Ali’s name during the remembrance or directly to The Riverview Center.
