I am not verified nor do I have media to back it up but it is my understanding he is in WPD custody as of a half hour ago. I'm sure there will be a press release, I have all WPD and all local media pulled up and I'm just waiting on it.

LE wants to make it clear though, he's not a suspect...they just wanted to speak to him because he may have information regarding the body found in Walker. :gaah: REALLY? It's almost comical how they word the press releases in regards to "suspects". If they are on the run, a PR stating he's not a suspect but they want to just talk to the perp certainly isn't going to make them stop and think "huh...well, if they don't think I did it and just want to TALK to me, maybe I should go to headquarters and just talk to them". Does LE think people are really THAT dumb?

I don't think LE uses it as a tactic to get the guy into custody, I think it's more or less to prevent the public from panicking or for his own safety. I wouldn't put it past some people around there to take justice into their own hands..

I can't say that if someone killed MY daughter I wouldn't be apt to do the same...sometimes I think street justice may be the only way that justice is served for these criminals. The "justice system" we hold today certainly leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to punishments. :(

I 100% agree with that!

I never thought once when the Amber Alert was issued that it would tie in with the deceased woman. My 1st thought also was where were the girls when their mother was being murdered and how did he come about taking them at 3 in the afternoon. I was so concerned that they had witnessed the death of their mother and were with him when he disposed of her body. Thankfully it doesn't sound like it. Poor little girls don't have a mother now and at least one won't have a father. Sad world we live in when couples can't work out their problems without violence.

A Waterloo man suspected of killing his girlfriend and leaving her body in Linn County was captured Thursday afternoon after police flash-banged a studio apartment where he was staying...

Calvin Jones said Hogan, his ex-wife’s son, unexpectedly showed up Wednesday at his room at the University Avenue Studios East and spent the night. He said Hogan indicated he was having some kind of problems but didn’t give any details.

It wasn’t until Thursday morning, after Jones left Hogan sleeping and went to a relative’s home and saw Hogan’s picture of the television news, that he learned authorities had been looking for Hogan. He went to police and waited outside the building as police went to get Hogan.

The uncle of Crystal Gaffney traveled to Cedar Rapids from Texas to watch Shaun Hogan’s first appearance in court, hoping to see a look of remorse in the man’s face. That look never came, John Maynard said...

Gaffney’s mother died in a car crash when Gaffney was seven years old and her father is serving a sentence in Anamosa State Penitentiary for drug charges, Gaffney was “just looking to be loved,” Maynard said.

“Crystal was a good person,” he said. “She didn’t deserve to die.”

Those poor girls! I guess they are lucky he didn't kill them too since they were witnesses.

I'm glad his ex turned him in! This explains the weirdness with the Amber Alert too... I think. It's all kind of jumbled.

http://thegazette.com/subject/news/newstrack-defense-in-hogan-case-asks-for-new-venue-20150302

The defense is asking the court to move the trial to another county based on “excessive” pretrial publicity of the case. Hogan’s lawyers argue the many newspaper articles and television broadcasts of the homicide and his arrest prevents Hogan from finding a fair and impartial jury.

Assistant Linn County attorney Jason Burns said Wednesday a hearing on the motion is set for March 13 in Linn County District Court. He likely will file a resistance to the change of venue.

Burns said he couldn’t give additional information regarding details of the case. The trial remains set for May 5.

Earlier this month:

Shaun Michael Hogan, 38, originally charged with first-degree murder, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. He admitted during the plea to assaulting and stabbing Crystal Gaffney.

Assistant County Attorney Monica Slaughter said after the hearing that Gaffney died from blunt force trauma. Evidence showed Hogan struck Gaffney in the head with a pipe wrench and stabbed her in the head with a screwdriver...

Hogan faces up to 50 years in prison, and he must serve 35 years before being eligible for parole. He will also be required to pay victim restitution. Sentencing is set for May 20 in Linn County District Court.

May 2016:

http://www.thegazette.com/subject/n...n-prison-for-killing-crystal-gaffney-20160520

Angela Lawrence said Friday she talked to her cousin Crystal Gaffney a few days before she was murdered. Gaffney told Lawrence she would die for her three girls. And “that’s exactly what she did” on July 8, 2014, Lawrence said in a victim’s impact statement.

Lawrence, now legal guardian of Gaffney’s daughters, said in the heart-wrenching statement she was thankful the girls wouldn’t have to endure Shaun Hogan’s abuse ever again. She couldn’t imagine what the girls had been through, as they had to watch Hogan killing their mother...

Hogan, 38, was sentenced to 50 years in prison for hitting Gaffney in the head with a pipe wrench and stabbing her in the head with a screwdriver...

He must serve a mandatory 35 years before being eligible for parole. Hogan will be 73 at that time.
