Stookesberry was last seen on the evening of February 8, 1999, when a fishing buddy dropped him off at home in Blakesburg, Iowa after an evening at a bar. He has never been heard from again. He was reported missing a week later.
Officials discovered Stookesberry appeared to have left his residence in the middle of cooking dinner and hadn't taken his diabetes or heart medication with him. His dogs had been left behind, something he never would have done under normal circumstances, and his laundry had been left hanging on a clothesline for a week. He didn't drive and used a cane to get around. Officials believe he was taken against his will. Few details are available regarding Stookesberry's disappearance and his whereabouts remain unknown.
