none of that fits for me.. the timeline is too tight imhoo (this is just my opinion here)

The only other thing I can think is that the perp saw them enter the trial and drove in the access rode that was near where the bikes were left and waited on them to ride past.

That is what I think. I think it is also possible that they had met the perp before either or both had met him at the pool in Waterloo or somewhere else and had an "appt" to meet him at 12:30 at that spot (which would take them past Mr. C's on Lake Ave.). I think it might be connected to the late incident a couple of days earlier in Waterloo. I think the bikes and purse were where they were found the whole time and not moved. I believe they were taken away from E'dale. MOO

The problem with this theory is that it doesn't explain the purse. 2 kids stole the bikes... And a kid's purse... Without looking in it... Or, looked in it and took it despite the fact it had nothing of value, just to dump it a few minutes later... And without being seen/arousing suspicion? No way.

Sea, stop making sense. LOL :)

Well daggonit, I think ya'll are close to what happened,
I really do. imo

EC was very friendly. I wonder if she walked her new puppy in the neighbourhood and someone she befriended lured the girls into a home to see a new puppy, i.e. hey I have a new puppy just like yours! I don't know how much stranger danger awareness could prepare unsuspecting children from this, especially if a woman is involved. Moo

There you go. Great point.

I wonder if the biker made any verbal remarks when he almost hit the bikes? The girls may have retreated to the woods at that point where the dogs folllowed their trail. That may have frightened them.

Now I use some imagination, perp hears it all, and wants to know if everything is okay.

I still think it's viable that the girls brought their bikes up to a garage and went inside a house.

rsbm

Ever since the those two girls stopped by my house, the possibility the girls went inside a house has really stuck with me.

I've thought of this too but -

how did the perp get the bikes to the lake?

It would require loading the bikes, then driving to the lake, parking the vehicle (possibly being seen) unloading the bikes, then either wheeling them or riding them ONE BY ONE (unless there is a second perp) to plant them at the lake. And a purse.

Why would the perp bother?

Why not lock the girls and the bikes up in his shed until the fuss had died down?

It also doesn't account for how the girls scent was found at the lake...my opinion only of course.

??????????????????????? ooops...I wasn't trying to post...slightly spilled cup of tea on keyboard...I turned it upside down and started shaking it...grabbed tissues to use as wipes...they shredded...shook the upside down keyboard some more and ran for towel...yikes...the LAST thing I meant to do was accidentally post(?) on board here, leaving my fave sleuths with yet more questions than answers. PLEASE laugh with me!!!!

lol oh my gosh, thank you for the laugh! I was trying so, so hard to figure out what "smiley" that was supposed to be.

I definitely believe the girls made it to the lake. Caught the tail end of an FBI show about Shawn Hornbeck's abduction over the weekend. For some reason, it makes me think of the girls.

A probable cause statement released by Rupp said Devlin "abducted SDH utilizing force for the purpose of terrorizing the victim. After securing SDH, Michael Devlin flourished a handgun in order to gain compliance of the minor child. Michael Devlin then transported him out of the county and concealed his whereabouts for four years and three months."

[SBM]
Charles Arlin Henderson, known as Arlin, was, like Ben and Shawn, about 100 pounds and from a rural town about an hour from St. Louis. Both Shawn and Arlin vanished at age 11 while riding their bikes. (Devlin actually struck Shawn's bicycle with his white chevy pickup knocking him over.)

Investigators began re-examining the 1991 case (Arlin Henderson) after Devlin's arrest. Detective Chris Bartlett said a witness saw a man snapping photos of Arlin before the Moscow Mills boy vanished.

Arlin's uncle, James McWilliams, said the boy came home from school a few months before he disappeared and told his mother a "tall, thin man" had been taking pictures of him.

ETA: On the FBI show, Devlin reportedly said there was no planning involved Shawn's abduction. Shawn was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Of course what this monster said wouldn't be worth :twocents: in my opinion.

Just moo, but perp may have gotten rid of bikes right away knowing LE could come knocking door to door looking for the girls or anything belonging to them.

The perp could have backed his vehicle right up to back door/garage and taken the girls to another location right after getting rid of the bikes.

It really sickens me to think of the possible scenarios.

Good thoughts! My initial response when I heard about Mr. G having to swerve to miss the bikes was that he was probably irritated. I could see him saying something like "da** kids always leaving their bikes lying around" - aloud, but not directly to the girls since he didn't see them - and that could easily have scared them. The only kink I can think of is IMO they had to be fairly far away from their bikes already in order to have time to run into the woods before Mr. G got from where he swerved to where the girls might've been 'hiding' since he was riding fast.

I've never heard him say anything like this happened, so it's totally speculation, but it's stuck with me from the beginning. Also just to make it clear I'm not saying anything bad about Mr. G - I can think of plenty of people who might say that same thing about the bikes.

I think the bikes were left at the abduction site near the CCTV and subsequently stolen by two kids who rode them to the lake and abandoned them there. JMOO

Wow. Good theory. I am in the "girls never went to the lake" pool. But my theory was that that perp nabbed them on the street and dumped the bikes at the lake.

Your theory is certainly worth considering. Thanks!

And, jumping off your post, the timeline is NOT all that tight. They were last seen on camera at about 12:10 and the bikes were found by LE at what?, almost 4?

None of the other "um, I mighta seen them" statements are concrete. So, IMHO, they lift right out. Well meaning folks, I am sure, but not solid stuff.

So 3.75 hours is not a narrow window in which two little girls who weren't being closely watched might disappear.

The world can change in much less time than 3.75 hours. Not a stretch to think a perp could take two girls right off a street.

What about the family driving around searching from 12.30 onwards?

Why didn't they find them?

Why separate the bikes from the girls at all?

As you said, one or the other could have been found by door-to-door?

:dunno:

I do not know whose bikes Mr. G saw. FBI is not including him in the timeline. I believe the bikes were found where Lyric's dad said they were found... right by the gate. Perp simply lured the girls to a place he had planned in advance because he was familiar with the area and an area which he knew when the bikes were found would be a HUGE distraction. And it was.... a full week of lake being drained before it was officially declared an abduction. It also allowed so much speculation of the family to come in and that really muddied the water too.

O/t for a second....I'm absolutely freezing down here in Australia.

It is winter and bitterly cold.

I'm sitting here with a scarf and woolly jumper.

I only wish I was warm like you guys....brrrrr.....

I agree. Too complicated to separate the bikes from the girls. Simply leave the bikes at the lake where they were lured and where the family and LE would immediately think the girls drowned.

Come to Texas! Nice and hot here! We had a brief respite from the heat in my area, but it's back in full force. It's so hot, even the chickens won't cross the road.

ETA: Is a woolly jumper anything like a snuggy? A onsie for adults?

When I think of wearing the flipflops of my youth and riding a bike, I remember those flimsy things would either fall off, or break at the toe from the excursion on the bike pedal, especially if cycling quickly. Perfect opportunity for someone to take advantage, wondering if the girl's bikes were scratched..
