It was broadcast live on Fox News. Shepard Smith was the host and he was very upset they didn't cut away in time.

Thank you. I wasn't disputing you, was just curious about how that came about, but now that I know it was on a live broadcast, it makes sense. I've seen many car chases on Fox News over the years, but I know they must have been very upset over this one.
Love Shepard Smith, btw.

Missing Iowa Cousins? Seriously? They have names.

In my humble opinion, it takes publicity for the general public to be able to put names to generic headline news which is why I personally am all for as much publicity as possible for "our little girls."

I didn't think you were (disputing me). It was such an strong example of why eye witness testimony is not reliable, I had to post about it. I should have posted a link but just didn't think about it at the time (I was still a bit freaked out by the whole thing). Shepard was yelling to cut away from it but they were too late.

Many people who don't follow these cases may not remember names but would remember the fact that the girls are cousins from Iowa.
As for the poll, I don't do polls very often, I avoid them like the plague. But I can be almost positive that both JVM and NG have received many complaints over the years about who should be covered on their shows, so perhaps they want to be diplomatic?
There are so many missing people in this country right now, not to mention the ones from other countries... it would be a horrendous task to try to figure out which one has the most public interest, without using some kind of poll. I'm not even going to comment on the use of the word "deserves" except to say that EVERY missing person deserves public awareness, and there is no person who deserves it more, or less, than any other.

No kidding! The whole thing upset me - vote for which kid "deserves" more air time? Really? Then they didn't even put the girls' names?

I understand it's TV and they do what they have to do for ratings etc., and I'm all for the girls getting more publicity, but that "poll" was pretty hard for me to swallow.

Daisynae please don't take this wrong. I'm really glad you brought this to our attention here, it's the concept that bothers me but if that's the way it is... I at least like knowing where to 'vote.'

Reading here about the televised suicide and the criminal investigation popularity vote has me feeling like I'm living in some freakish science fiction world. The use of technology is out of control, with no sign of any boundaries being imposed ... I guess that freedom of speech thing is so much more important.

But the public will never learn the names of the girls as long as the media keeps calling them "Missing Iowa Cousins". They probably got just as much, if not more, media attention as Ayla Reynolds but the poll assumes that people would recognize her just by her first name.

Thinking of Lyric & Elizabeth a lot lately. Frustrated that there never seems to be any movement in their case. Feels like no real movement since day one (hope that's just how it seems to us outside of LE).
Come home, girls!

Regarding the above article about recognition difficulties ... the below is from Stanford University. There are a number of suggestions about what people can do to improve their recognition skills. It relates specifically to remembering people's names ... but the skills are transferable:

Learning Students Names

Teachers who are slow in learning the names of their students often tend to be rated as uninspired and uninspiring. Teachers cannot claim to be concerned about how well their students learn if they themselves do not try as hard as they can to show they care about one of the most important possessions anyone can have in a mass civilization: a face and a name. This article goes over several ways to quickly learn student’s names. The author recommends that you try out several of these methods to find the one that works best for you.

Before Coming To Class, Read The Class Roster Several Times. Focus on the last names and honorifics (Mr./Ms.). Memorize as many of them as you can. Then you can concentrate on looking for Williams and remembering what he or she looks like. At this point there is no need to focus on the first, or given names. That just increases memory burden without yielding initial benefits.

Provide A Student Survey During The First Class- On the first day give a brief survey that asks for a name and e-mail address (or favorite sport, etc.). Be sure to include an open-ended essay question about backgrounds and expectations. Allow students at least 15 minutes of writing time. While the students are busy writing, study their faces, clothing styles, posture, or anything that you can use to personalize the individual student.

Set Up A Mnemonic Position Chart- The first row on your left "A", the second row, "B" and so on. Students often return to the same seat they sat in during the first class, (or somewhere close by). Then, starting with position "A1," ask the students to introduce themselves and say a few words about themselves and their expectations for the course. While listening as carefully as possible to what student "A1" is saying, find the name on the class roster and code "A1" next to it. Add any notes that might help you remember that student. During the next class, refer to your class roster and chart. (A variation of this is the Take A Digital Photo below)

Review- Before the second class meeting, review the surnames and the survey results and attempt to recollect names, faces and places. Spend some time testing your knowledge of students' names: Which ones can you name? What are the names of those you cannot identify? What identifiable characteristic will help you remember certain students?

Has reality TV hit crime focused talking heads up the side of the head? Has one of them actually put a voting poll on her public website where she asks the public to vote on which tragic missing children are most popular, or should be given more attention? I'm sooooooooooo old fashioned when it comes to a situation like this. I am very definitionly from another generation. I am completely against it and I hope it never happens again. I can't imagine how I, as a parent, would feel if my child was missing and national television was holding a vote on whether my child deserved more air time than another family in the same situation. It's whacked pitting one tragedy against the other ... but that's just my opinion.

Yep, it's a huge meat processing operation, they handle beef, pork and chicken, although the Waterloo plant processes pork only, i think.

So these are farm animal buying stations where a few of the herd are brought for inspection? They could be kept there for a couple of days. It sounds like they are 800-1000 foot square foot, one story buildings with full basements. The floor is made of slats so that animal feces falls to the basement.

Did I get that right? Are there any un-used farm animal inspection stations? Was it 3-5 animals in 800 square feet ... is there an office? I'm curious. You mentioned that the buildings can be a bit dilapitated ... is that the norm? How is the Iowa farm animal buying market today? Are aminals still inspected in dilapitated inspection stations?

I would really like to see photos and cross road locations ... next time you pass by. We could map them around Meyers Lake.

JVM would be able to cover all of the missing children's cases if she dropped a few of the celebs in rehab stories...but I know that is part of her gig. Still, it is annoying. Hard to take a show seriously that veers from Paris Hilton to missing babies.

People who frequent the HLN website, who recognize the names of other missing children (without any description of their case) should know the names Elizabeth Collins and Lyric Cook. But the HLN staff assumes that they wouldn't.
