JVM would be able to cover all of the missing children's cases if she dropped a few of the celebs in rehab stories...but I know that is part of her gig. Still, it is annoying. Hard to take a show seriously that veers from Paris Hilton to missing babies.

If that's what she does, one might get the impression that she doesn't actually care about anything other than animal rights ... and that may be only because it's important to some celebs. Perhaps she's simply the talking head that follows a mandate of 3 minutes for missing children, 4 minutes for animals, 5 minutes for celebs ... who knows what the puppet masters are thinking.

People who frequent the HLN website, who recognize the names of other missing children (without any description of their case) should know the names Elizabeth Collins and Lyric Cook. But the HLN staff assumes that they wouldn't.

Does the TV station call them by name or as "missing cousins"? Does the Talking Head assume that the idea of missing cousins is more appealing for ratings than two missing girls with different last names?

From what I've seen, when a case first breaks, the headlines are generic, and do not mention the victim's name. Depending on how intense the coverage is, usually a few days or a week later, the media will start using the victim's name in the headline. For some reason, this case never entered that stage.

I disagree. I've followed missing person cases for years and the missing persons name, age and other particulars are usually mentioned right from the beginning. I just googled early articles on different missing cases and names were definitely listed along with age.

We should just be grateful they aren't referred to as the cousins from Idaho or Ohio.

(a very long running joke in Iowa are celebrities and politicians who have mistaken Iowa for one of those two states; the most famous example was then-President Gerald Ford who said he was happy to be in Ohio when he was in Iowa City... located in guess what state?)

If that's the case, then this case was different. It was first announced that Lyric Cook, aged 10, and Elizabeth Collins, aged 8, were missing. They were cousins, but the release of their names was not delayed.

This case entered the stage the day they disappeared.

Yep, it's a huge meat processing operation, they handle beef, pork and chicken, although the Waterloo plant processes pork only, i think.

Is the industry booming ... are people selling their pigs because there's a corn shortage?

I remember that. Lololol.

I am talking about the HEADLINES. Nothing else. Just the headlines (title) of articles about the case. Most headlines refer to them as "Missing Iowa Cousins" or "Missing Iowa Girl" (if the article is just about one girl). In other high-profile cases, the headline will use the victim's name.

(And this just about national media because even articles from media outlets in Iowa do not even use their names...)

Yes, the content of the article/video mentions their names. But the headlines rarely do.

Has reality TV hit crime focused talking heads up the side of the head? Has one of them actually put a voting poll on her public website where she asks the public to vote on which tragic missing children are most popular, or should be given more attention? I'm sooooooooooo old fashioned when it comes to a situation like this. I am very definitionly from another generation. I am completely against it and I hope it never happens again. I can't imagine how I, as a parent, would feel if my child was missing and national television was holding a vote on whether my child deserved more air time than another family in the same situation. It's whacked pitting one tragedy against the other ... but that's just my opinion.

Otto, that is why I did not, could not, vote. I too imagined what if one of my children or grandchildren was missing, and there was a vote on whether my child deserved more air time. I just felt sick thinking about that. I could not vote.

Who knows what her format is; sometimes she does a whole show on Janet Jackson, for example and another day she does a whole show on a trial. She is all over the place. I guess it is almost more of a so called "pop culture" show. Nancy Grace tends to do the same thing, and often she does choose to cover a crime, but it is one where the suspect is already identified, which is great, but not helping in all of those cases that need the eye of the public.

I know she (NG) can talk about whatever she wants, but she should not be viewed as some great hero for the missing, when her shows about actual current missing persons cases are few and far between. Better than nothing I guess, but when these shows drop a case, I am sure it leaves the minds of many viewers too. I have read many places on the internet, for example, where people assume that Kyron Horman was found long ago, since he is no longer mentioned.

Most farmers who sell hogs are selling on a yearly contract where they are committed to producing X number per year for a given price. It's a good deal if the farmer guesses right on the price of corn but it's a bad deal if the farmer guesses wrong.

Cattle are usually sold on a per-animal basis.

In any case, it's a tough way to make a living.

I couldn't vote either. It just felt wrong, in light of the anguish of the families whose loved one would not win.

Thanks, Marilyn and all peeps who searched their memories regarding rainfall.

In case the subj should come up again, we need to keep in mind that the 0.17" rainfall on July 13th (& the 0.0" from Jul.9-Jul.12) was for Waterloo, not for Evansdale. Ty.

I feel like I am a broken record here, but again, I live very, very close to Evansdale and I remember the details of this weekend very vividly. For one, it was my son's birthday weekend, and two, my family goes camping every weekend. We stayed local that weekend (at Deerwood) because of my son's birthday party.

Since we go camping, rain tends to cause problems. However, due to the drought this Summer, the rain was welcomed and I was hoping the burn ban would be lifted if we received enough rain.

I believe the official rainfall totals are recorded at the Waterloo Airport. This is on the far Northwest edge of town. I remember it raining early the morning of the 13th, all through the morning. It tended to be a sprinkle/mist from about 5-6am to about 11am. It was enough of a nuisance that a client of mine had a daycare fieldtrip cancelled that morning. The sprinkling started again around 3pm, when I left work that day. This was a very, very short-lived bout, but with unusually large raindrops. After rain in Iowa, the humidity becomes unbearable! I have assumed there were not many people out that day due to the sprinkling rain in the morning, and then the humidity afterwards.

Not that it matters, but it started to sprinkle again the morning of the 14th. I was on my way to the hair salon, worried my hair would be immediately ruined and frizzy for the birthday party. It stopped sprinkling again before I left the salon, only to be replaced by the horrid humidity again.

My opinion only, of course!

It appears Farmland meat packing also has the buying stations out and around rural Iowa

Peeples, are these buying stations on private land? Are they isolated, or alongside the roads? I wonder if these buying stations were checked, or monitored after Luric and Elizabeth disappeared?

Thanks for continuing to post this. I know it gets frustrating having to post it for the 100th time. :) I have always had the impression that it was more of a "drizzle/get the car dirty" rain that morning. So little rain that it still made sense to water your lawn even though it rained/sprinkled that day, but enough to (as you said) worry about your hair getting frizzy.

I really feel that the perp that abducted these girls is an avid hunter.

Why? IIRC hunting season starts soon and hunters will be out in the woods so might be more likely to find them if they're out in the woods somewhere. Otherwise I haven't read anything that suggests the perp is a hunter. Do you think the abductor is hoping a fellow hunter will find the girls or something?

I hope the ground was damp enough around the lake area ie Maiden Lane for example, to show vehicle and foot prints.
