The 125-acre park is a popular site for hunting, fishing and camping, he said.

“It kind of shocked me when I heard hunters had found them,” said Gene Niedermann of Dunkerton.

The girls’ disappearance has been a common topic of conversation there.
Do they keep track of who is camping in the area, like maybe who might have been camping there at the time they went missing? Iirc I remember some of the earlier threads had a lot of speculation about people camping near the lakes.

Yes, it's awful. But, the worst outcome would be to never know what became of these two children.

Prayers are with the family and law enforcement.

I so agree. I have seen interviews with family member of missing children. It eats at them for the rest of their life. Knowing is painful but if a body is never recovered they are tormented every day thinking today they may walk through the door and heartbroken each day they do not come home. I think in most cases these missing children are truly gone.

Tragic! I am glad their bodies were recovered however. A huge Thank You for Gracelin and all the Websleuthers who listened and posted on the scanner thread. Thank you Nursebeeme for your links and maps and keeping us in line!

RIP Elizabeth & Lyric!

I have to tell you that as heart breaking as the news is, I am in fear. we have a murderer of children walking around our community. I grew up here and have heard of Seven Bridges Park but never knew where it is located...my gut is telling me with the abduction taking place at Meyers Lake and those precious little girls being found at Seven Bridges Park, this is the work of a local. as a side note...many meth manufacturors make meth in wodded areas.

excellent question. wish I knew the answer. I too recall the early conversations regarding campers who frequented the many local campsites.

it is my understanding that this park used to be used quite a bit, but in the past few years has been allowed to become overgrown/not used much other than a hunting access

our thoughts are with all of you local folks and your community as you absorb this awful news. I hope LE is able to quickly determine who is responsible and bring justice for these girls families and a sense of safety and wellbeing back to your community.

I am wondering about if the girls' clothes or other items belonging to them were found with the bodies. The bodies, it seems to me, would be skeletonized after nearly 5 months. But they knew almost right away - despite the fact that the no medical examiner or coroner or forensic anthropologist had viewed the remains yet yesterday - that these were likely Lyric & Lizzie.

I'm not sure this assumption would be made (and so widely publicized) based upon size of the remains only. There are other missing kids across America they could be (granted the location makes it more likely it's Lyric & Lizzie, but I doubt this was enough to go on without an expert examining the remains).

This makes me think their clothes (or some other items belonging to them) were found with/on the remains and gives me hope there will be some type of forensic evidence to tie to a perp (and use to put him away for a long, long time).

Our local news in SD just picked up the news of the two cousins about 47 minutes ago. My heart is just breaking for the families and friends of the Elizabeth and Lyric. May the girls rest in peace and may justice be quickly served upon the monster(s) responsible for doing this to these two beautiful girls. My heart and prayers go out to the families and friends of Elizabeth and Lyric.

From NurseBeeMe's excellent link regarding a killer's awareness space:

In the vast majority of cases of child abduction murder, the victim and perpetrator are at least familiar with one another, having actually met or at least noticed each other at school, church, a friend’s house, walking within the neighborhood or along some route or transportation corridor that the victim frequently traveled. The most rare type of relationship in child abduction murder cases is that of complete stranger.

...because in the vast majority of child abduction murders, as well as other crimes, researchers have found that the perpetrator lives within his awareness space, commits his crimes close to home and within that awareness space, and disposes of his victims and other evidence at the outer edges of the awareness space, generally along the space’s transportation corridors.

...statistically, based on research of other abduction murder cases in North America and England, it is more likely than not that the murderer lives in the same area of town as Jessica, possibly within a few blocks. This same research found that a surprising number of child abduction murderers even lived on the same street as their victims.

I thought exactly the same thing regarding the clothing. my guess is being in the woods for that length of time that there had to have been animal activity as far as the remains go. so I am assuming the early ID was probably clothing of some sort.

I was really holding out hope of a Jaycee Duggard-like situation going on here with the girls and that someone was just holding them captive but they'd be found alive.

I am very saddened by this discovery. But in some small way, I am glad the girls were found together and I take it to mean neither spent much time facing down their abductor alone. I hope they were able, in the end, to be of some small comfort to each other. I just read Ann Rule's new book which includes info on Susan Cox Powell's sons' murder by their dad. When their bodies were found, the boys were found holding each other's hands.

These girls seemed to be not only cousins but close friends who did a lot together. It is doubly sad to lose two children. But I am somewhat comforted by the fact that each of these girls had one of their best friends & cousin there with them so that they were never completely alone with the monster that did this and so that they weren't alone at the end.

It's scary to think that the perpetrator could have committed this crime and returned in time to help with the search for the girls.

My prayers are with their families as they mourn their children and begin the healing process. I also pray that the person(s) responsible are caught and justice served.

Hopefully there will be an arrest soon so the families can have some closure. They have been thru hell and back.
