Deer, feral hogs, and other animals bed down in high grass. I researched the feral hog population in Iowa and they seem to be plentiful. They frequent river banks, corn fields, and deserted camping areas foraging for food.. Hogs travel in packs, have an excellent sense of smell, and will excavate the contents of a shallow grave over time.
Most times there are deer/animal trails that run parallel on both sides of rivers & creeks.
Pigs will happily eat a live human, let alone a dead one.
It really does sound as if they've not been there long at all. Not 45 days, anyway. :moo:
I hadnt even consdered feral hogs into the eqaution. I didnt realize they were such a problem in Iowa.

As big as the problem sounds and as indiscriminate as they are in their feeding habits, this info confuses the issue even more in my mind.
I would think, if the girls bodies had been there all these months, the hogs would have gotten to them. Especially in a wildlife area that DNR has not kept up as well in recent years as back in the day.
But if there had been that sort of aggressive predation I would expect scattered skeletonized remains and not "bodies" per se.
Curiouser and curiouser.
I am beginning to give the idea that girls have not been out there all this time more weight.
