Thanks. Can anyone pls advise me as to how soon the dogs were brought in after the kids went missing? I was under the impression that the dogs only detected the scent on the docks more recently, not immediately at the start of the investigation. In the link you provided, the article states the dogs tracked the scent to the docks four days after they went missing.

Knowing it was four days after the kids went missing that the dogs tracked scent to the dock area, I have to ask again:

How did the police know to immediately descend on the lake in the first place?

The aunt went to the Meyer's Lake, exited the car and started asking people if they had seen the children. It's my understanding a witness stated he saw them. LE was called and arrived at lake around 3pm. The bikes were found around 4PM.

I think the timeline is a little off, imo, but that is what is being reported.

Possibly due the call from the guy that said he ran into the bikes on his bike ride at 1227, does anyone know what time this guy contacted police?

If they were abducted, I agree with the two theories, lured to the dock or to the grassy area close to where the bikes were found.

He saw them at 12:27, but did not call LE until he discovered two little girls were missing. So his cell will not show he called at the time he ran across the bikes.

Yes, and I've stated that I've felt this way all along. I know this trail and lake so well, I'm on it 2-3 times/week with my kids, sometimes more. That spot is spooky, and I don't care what you come across, I've never met someone comfortable with stopping in that spot. I've read other locals posts on here where they feel the same - we actually pick up our pace there and hustle through that tight little area of the trail. And that is during daytime. I've been thru there with my kids at dusk and after dark, and it is downright scary. I'm a grown man, 230 lbs, capable of handling myself, and I don't linger there. Partly out of fear of a biker careening around that corner and having literally nowhere to swerve, and partly out of concern that it is just so out of sight, and with the highway buzzing by, out of earshot as well, even though you know there are roads and homes just a stone's throw away, if someone was waiting to ambush you, it is a perfect location.

I suppose, now that I type that, it makes it a perfect spot to attempt an abduction, but, as noted, in order to be on the trail, you'd need to be almost a block from your vehicle, leaving it 30 yards up the trail and parked on a grassy spot where a vehicle would be incredibly suspicious, or 15 yards up the trail and then through a thickly wooded area, or across that lawn on the road, where you'd be clearly visible from almost all directions for the length of a city block. All along, however, is the feeling that, literally at any second, a biker/jogger will suddenly appear around the blind corners from either direction. During the day, the trail is just busy enough that this is rather expected. I pass someone on that trail nearly every time I use it, sometimes many people.

I have a question...how long would it take to ride a bike (children) from grandmother's house, to that spot? Looking ath the map to me, I think it would take quite a bit of time with intersections, traffic, etc. Thanks!

FBI divers may join search for missing Iowa girls
By DAVID PITT, AP

EVANSDALE, Iowa — An FBI dive team from Los Angeles may join other agents and Iowa officers investigating the disappearance of two young cousins.

Eight-year-old Elizabeth Collins and 10-year-old Lyric Cook-Morrissey were last seen Friday at their grandmother's house in Evansdale, a suburb of Waterloo in northeast Iowa. Their bicycles and Elizabeth's purse were found later that day at nearby Meyers Lake, and FBI dogs detected the girls' scent in the area.

FBI spokeswoman Sandy Breault (broh) said Wednesday that if the divers are deployed, they would search the deeper holes of water in the lake. Officials have been draining it since Monday.

Breault also says the FBI's Child Abduction Rapid Deployment team of five or six is on the scene in Iowa. She would not comment on the focus of their investigation...

How long would it take to go from Grandmas house to the spot they were at and around the whole track? Wonder if once around the track was the intended bike ride?

If that is the case: I would have to say someone followed the girls there, whether it was from grams or closer to meyer's lake.

If they left grams at 12:15 they would of been taken/drown within 5 minutes of being there (iirc it is a 10 minute ride from gram to the lake). If grams time is right and they left at 11:30...that opens a wide gap of time a perp would have to hurt/take these two girls, but still less than 45 minutes. I also believe 1 perp could do this, a perp would only need one girl to make the other come with.

Or someone went with them to the lake. Hey, let me show you a really cool spot. These are kids and attention from anyone older, wise or cool immediately overrides the ability to think. There have been some people saying, it would be easy to target them because their home lives and they are craving attention or someone who listens. I think they had plenty of that at home. They could just have been pursuaded just as easily being in that tween age bracket. So, if someone goes with them to the "cool" spot and throws their purse over the fence "in play" it could explain that. Also, this older person, being wise, could say...leave the bikes there so we have a marker or reference point of where to look on the other side of the fence when we look for the purse. Otherwise, if it is heavily wodded, brushy, etc...trying to find the purse would be very hard. So, the bikes are left and they wander to some point where they are snatched. It would be very easy to trick little girls into a scenrerio like this. IMOO.

If they rode East to the bike path, the route is around 1.5 miles and should take them 15-20 minutes.

I discussed this with my daughter who is 9, almost 10. She is a smart kid and has been taught all about "stranger (and not stranger) danger".

She said that if someone somehow grabbed her friend, the first thing she would do would be to grab her phone and call 911. I then asked her what she would do if the bad guy had a weapon and threatened her friend with it, she said she would do whatever he said to try to protect her friend. Even go with him. :banghead:

My 12 year old son and his best friend said the same thing. My 16 year old and his best friend assured me they could take care of things on their own.

Earlier this spring my oldest son brought home his report card the day after he had made the varsity baseball team (as a sophomore) with a D on it. Our family rule is you make anything lower than a C you don't play. It doesn't matter if your GPA is high enough that the school will let you play, you still don't play. He cried, begged, pleaded and argued for hours but the rule stood. For some reason when I got up about 12:30 that night I checked in on him, something I never do, and his closet was nearly emptied and the fan had been removed from his window. I really went into a panic. My husband drive around the neighborhood while I contacted his friends and tried to search his Facebook for clues (he had changed the password, another big no no). I was able to see a lot of posts he had made on friends' walls that concerned me but all of those friends were denying seeing him. I contacted the police about something to 1 and after they questioned me, my husband and our youngest son and for over an hour they started going back over the same territory I had covered. To make a long story short by questioning the friends face to face in front of their parents one finally admitted that another's stepsister had delivered my son to his biological father (he gave up rights to him nearly 10 years ago and my husband adopted him). My ex-husband had taken him a couple hours away and at 6:30 a charge showed up on our debit card where he had rented a room in the next state. It took 3 more hours before my son was released back to me due to the ex showing an original birth certificate that listed him and issues involved with crossing state lines. That was the longest 9 hours of my life. When I got my son back I was torn between hugging him for hours or slapping cuffs on him and locking him in his room for the next 2 years.

Anyway, I can't imagine how these parents are feeling. I had an older child that I felt certain was stupid but safe. It was hard having the focus on my family for a long hour when I just wanted them to go find my baby, I don't think I could have stood up to days without snapping. I hope these 2 little girls are found safe but my faith is waning.

Thankfully the FBI CARD is onsite ....5 days now these two girls have been missing and no firm leads or clues. Wish a reputable profiler would step into the fray and do a profile for somebody who would abduct two children as this is a bit abnormal.

Thanks so much for the pics Ollipop. I have a much better perspective now. So this is a fairly small town?? I'll look the population up in a minute, but doesn't seem any bigger than most of my towns around me. Are people not freaking out??? I mean I would be if this were around me.

1. That was in reference to someone saying they saw on HLN that Lyric went missing a week prior to Friday. Apparently a parent said it on the program, although I haven't seen it. We asked authorities to see if Lyric had been reported missing a week prior to Friday. They said no.by Chris Essig - Courier 11:33 AM

Chief Abben is quoted in some several MSM sources as saying "We have no reason to believe there was any foul play at this time," he said. "Everyone is suspect until we find something."
and yet he says RSO's have been cleared

I'm confused- if he has said literally everyone is suspect, does that mean we can openly sleuth and discuss 'everyone' here??
Or am I reading that wrong ...and the statement needs a qualifier of 'a' added before suspect.
Just wondering.TIA

Much earlier in this thread, (around post #136) Ollipop has posted pictures of the area. It might be easier to find just by checking his posts.

Thanks again to Ollipop!

thanks! definitely can see how dark it is in that portion of the trail, adjacent trees, hidden dirt path and grassy area appear to make and abduction possible

Wow. They must be pretty certain the girls are in the lake. Dredged it, draining it, and now divers. Is the bottom weedy? Would a body get tangled in the weeds and not rise?

I think saying 'everyone is a suspect' makes more sense, and it also seems to be standard cop-speak. I also agree that stating the RSOs are cleared but everyone is a suspect is odd. isn't there something like 200 RSOs in the area? I understand they had a lot of people working the job, but how thoroughly did they check them out? Did they just knock on doors and ask where the RSO was on Friday and then move on to the next house? Were any not home, or unavailable? any have friends staying with them? So many possible questions!

Yes, thank you Ollipop! I think you are an excellent voice for Lyric and Elizabeth: the flip flops the tire tracks, the careful observations, the pictures, etc. Glad you found Websleuths!!
