MISSING IN IOWA: Grandmother: 'It's absolutely no family'

if you look up dysfunctional in the dictionary, you re gonna see our pictures," said Vicki Weikert, the paternal grandmother of Cook-Morrissey, as crews continued to drain an Evansdale lake in the vicinity of where the bikes and a purse were found, "but we will fight to the death for our children."

The pond is being drained. Divers are on the way. All the RSO have apparently been cleared. There are no volunteer searches. What now? Is LE actively conducting searches, or... what are they doing, exactly? Not being sarcastic (well, maybe a teensy bit), just curious as to what else is going on while the lake slowly drains.

ETA: I see in this article posted above, that the search area has "exanded" but it isn't clear who is searching, or how, or anything.

All through the last 3 days there has been searching going on, if you are interested to know more, look through the scanner chatter.

Regarding the extremely thorough search of the lake, I have to say, I think it isn't the girls that they are just searching for at this point. Probably their main focus other than them is any evidence of an abduction. Discarded clothing, evidence of a crime, etc. So looking for smaller objects may take more intensive searching. jmo

Thanks. I think that reporter is behind a bit. As of yesterday, per this article, all RSOs have been cleared:

Abben said the sex offender interviews led to no new information.

"Everyone has been cleared," Abben said. "We have no concerns with that."
http://www.news-gazette.com/news/co.../fbi-dogs-join-search-missing-iowa-girls.html

they probably have cleared the RSO in Evansdale, but there are 100s and 100s in Waterloo. Waterloo also has a county jail, work release facility, and facilities for RSO. Waterloo and Evansdale are geographically very close. There is also a high rate of meth users/dealers in the Waterloo and surrounding areas. Not pointing guilty fingers, just trying to give you a clear picture of the surrounding communities. Children in Evansdale go to K-6 grades in Evansdale, then to Waterloo for the most part for 7-12 grades.

what keeps them going to the lake for searches? are there any clues that led to that?

<snipped for space> So, if someone goes with them to the "cool" spot and throws their purse over the fence "in play" it could explain that. Also, this older person, being wise, could say...leave the bikes there so we have a marker or reference point of where to look on the other side of the fence when we look for the purse.

Great points. They both (especially the younger one) are around that age where if a boy 'likes' you he throws his lunch at you or something. Or your purse over the fence?

Has there been any clarification on what the "purse" was? I didn't have what I'd call an actual "purse" until well into my teens, but had various things when I was younger that I could see someone calling a purse. Was one of the girls trying to look older by carrying an adult-type purse? Or was it more like a kiddie purse (i.e. last year I got my young niece a little plush one that had a stuffed animal in it). Or something in between?

Maybe not important at all but it seems like it might be. If they were trying to look "grown up" and "cool" for an older boy and if it is an abduction this would lead me to think teenager, whereas if they were just out and about as young girls well... yuck. Yuck either way but the trying to impress a teenage boy strikes me as less threatening. Maybe I'm naive.

How many times to we see relatives (estranged) chiming in and family bashing in cases like this? I take this with a huge grain of salt. Obviously, the family needs some privacy (due to stress, peoples accustaions, etc) so the media will seek out anyone who will talk. IMOO

It is where the girls' bikes and Elizabeth's purse were found. They have no other real leads that I am aware of to point them in a different direction. I believe that they are desperately trying to find something at that lake to indicate where to look next and to absolutely, 100% rule out that lake for clues.

Oh yeah, and it is the only location that I am aware of that the dogs hit that the girls were there.

A purse could be one that was once a parent's...or a cinderalla sparkly thing you get from walmart. I think at that age...yes...having a purse can make you feel more grown up...especially with a cell phone in it (working or not). But, more in a sense of playing grown-up...not trying to attract boys or pretend you are 21...LOL. I think it is just a way to pack around stuff, in a girly way. Just like boys use cargo pockets...

Interesting and confusing. Not sure why they're sending the FBI divers in now. Shouldn't they have done that before draining the lake?:waitasec:
This action might be needed by the DA to disprove a defense team's strategy of "my client didn't do it; the lake was not thoroughly searched". There may also be really deep holes in the lake.

Hi everyone, I'm new, but I'm a local and I've visited this forum many times. I was practically sitting on my hands last night wishing I could post! I'm originally from Iowa City, but I've lived in Waterloo (About 3 miles from Meyer Lake) for just over a year now and my husband is from the area.

Some of this might be ancient history, but on the 2nd thread there was a lot of speculation about the appropriateness of Lyric's earrings in her school photo. The elementary school Lyric attends has a uniform/dress code, so you find that many children express themselves via jewelry/accessories. Also, a family friend works at the school and told me Lyric is one of the biggest children in her school, let alone her grade. She explained that she would think it'd be extremely hard to get her (and another child) against her will.

To the other locals: Do any of you recall the stabbing on a bike/running path a few months back? Wasn't it at George Wyth? I'll go dig and see if I can find links, but a mother was jogging and stabbed on the trail in broad daylight (around 2pm?) on a weekday. I believe they found the man, and he'd done something of the sort before, but I can't help but feel strange that there seems to be (and have been in the past) a pattern of crime on the bike/running trails.

Also, (again, I'll dig for a link here) before moving here I lived in a town that neighbored Des Moines and a few days ago there was an attempted abduction there. An 8 year old girl playing at a park when a black SUV pulled up and offered to drive her home. SHe screamed and her parents heard her (watching a baseball game). That'd be about 2 hrs west of here.

Sorry to be so long winded! I've been waiting to post! I don't believe the girls are in the lake. The locals on here have done a FANTASTIC job laying out the area, and in all honesty, it was a long time before I realized Meyer was a lake, I assumed it was a pond, as it isn't very large. I don't see how they could be missed in there. And with the construction on 20/380, the traffic is often VERY slow moving. I'm often stuck in it and I feel I'd definitely notice and think it odd if I saw someone swimming in Meyer.

I do not have an address for Lyric's mother, but her father's residence is 3.8 miles driving distance from Elizabeth's house and where the girls were last seen.
So I would say, yes, most definitely.

absolutely yes...as you leave waterloo you are immediately entering Evansdale when going in that direction.
