If the girls are not found in the lake, imo the perp planned this abduction very carefully, was known to Lyric, was possibly aware of the previous incident ... no signs of a struggle, the girls went away willingly and I think the abduction occurred in the post office parking lot and bikes placed in the park in the middle of the night. The abduction is far too organized to be a decision that was made spur of the moment by some pervert/predator. Perp has FBI stumped!!

IMO

Respectfully disagree.

One of the most famous cases in Australia was Daniel Morcombe, a young boy who was taken from a bus stop on the side of a BUSY highway in Queensland.

It was a spur of the moment abduction.

One minute Daniel was there, literally 2 minutes later he was gone. That is all his murderer needed to get him off the road, into his car, and disappear without a trace.

I wonder if it was the fence on the highway side or the lake side. Not that it would make a huge difference, but if the girls were the ones that did it, it gives an idea of which way they were facing. I remember reading somewhere the bikes were on the lake side but the purse was found on the other side of the fence(on the highway side) is that right?

AFAIK we do not have confirmation which side of which fence the purse was found. It was first reported and discussed being over the fence on the highway side. Then over the fence on the lake side. And all along reported about 20 feet away from the bikes.

Timeframe is wrong for placing bikes in the park in the middle of the night......

The purse being on the other side of the fence-does that mean someone would have to climb over the fence to get it-or is there a gate-I am confused!TIA

It was thrown over the fence on the lakeside, and there is/was an unlocked gate on that side also. Like Ollipop said, they could have come along the fence from the backside in he woods on the lakeside and lured them from there.... imo

Searching a lake or any body of water is painfully slow, dangerous and has to be done in a very systematic way. Even divers can get caught in weeds, debris, etc and perish. The less water in the lake, the faster the search and more of a chance something will not be missed. It makes sense to have the area "prepped" prior to sending in divers. As for the sump pump thing of draining out pockets of water, I think the lake has drains in the bottom by drainage pipes already placed; however, often times there are natural aquifers, springs and rivers that replace the water as it drains. Also, a lake has many troughs and valleys so it will not be flat like a swimming pool, and often in those deeper areas if there are pits or holes you suck the water out they can collapse on themselves, burying anything there. IMOO

The lake in question is a borrow pond, meaning that it's a place where they quarried rock from to build I380 back in the 1970s. Such borrow ponds are common along interstates in the midwest. They were planned with an eye to creating an attractive area at the end. After they finish quarrying, the DNR lined it with clay so that it would hold water.

It's spring fed, so you are correct, there's no way to keep it completely empty. There are no creeks or rivers emptying into the lake or coming out of it.

The local water table has been considerably dropped by the drought. There was a shot of searchers going through a nearby corn field that almost made me cry. The corn was only shoulder high and had started to yellow off six to eight weeks early. Corn is mutated grass and one of the most hardy crops there is.

I haven't read the entire thread, but the girls have been on my mind since they've gone missing. Just a hunch, but does anyone think the dump scene (of the bikes, phone) is a staged scene? If the girls went to the lake, where are the flip flops? If they were abducted, someone tossed the phone over the fence. I see that the bikes were found in the middle of the road (originally). Was that so they would be found? Wouldn't a kidnapper go out of the way to hide the bikes?

I'm not blaming, family, friends, or anyone right now. Something just seems off to me and I can't put my finger on it.

In the Hornbeck case, was his bike left out, or tucked away. All I can find is he was last seen riding his lime green bicycle then discovered 4 years later.

Maybe my mind is all over the place because I don't want to "go there". I pray the girls are found soon!

MOO

Can any of our wonderful locals say if its common to have transients/homeless/drifters in the area? I'd imagine in a town this small...you'd recognize someone who is "out of place" or is it common to have non-residents pass thru frequently?

Living in Evansdale
The Collins Family: Drew and Heather Cook Collins and their four children, one of whom is Elizabeth, 8.

Heather's mother, Wylma Cook, comes over most mornings to help Heather care for Drew and Heather's four children because Heather has a serious health problem. Lyric has been accompanying her grandmother to the Collins' home recently since her mother, Misti, began a new job.

Living in Waterloo
Wylma Cook: Misti Cook Morrissey lives with her mother, Wylma Cook, and Misti's daughter, Lyric, 10. Lyric is the daughter of Mysti and Daniel E. Morrissey. Wylma is the mother of three daughters: Heather, Misti, and Tammy.

Vicki Weikert: Paternal grandmother of Lyric Morrissey. Mother of Daniel E. Morrissey.

I think I have it correct about who lives where for those listed above, but does anyone know...

1) Does Lyric's brother live with Lyric and Misti Morrissey and their grandmother/mother, Wylma Cook, in Waterloo or does he live somewhere else?

2) Does Dan Morrissey live with Lyric, Misti and Wylma at Wylma's house or does he live with his mother in Waterloo or does he have his own place?

3) Are Misti and Dan Morrissey married to each other at this time or is he married to someone else (he mentioned a wife one night on TV)?

I'm confused....

Yes very common but 5-6 days is a long time to still be interviewing family members and that worries me because most of the cases I've followed, the case ends going cold due to lack of evidence and/or leads and the family continue to be suspected (wrong or right).

In this case I am leaning towards the police not having a clue and leaning hard on the family for that reason.

Yes, the family is usually responsible, but in this case it simply doesn't make sense (with what we know so far).

this was a quick grab and not planned out imhoo..

if the perp planned anything he scouted the location for his grab (ie: where are a lot of kids out alone that he could grab one unnoticed)

just my opinion and from experience or I should say personal experience with people being able to come into a small town and grab a child on a whim while they are walking by

On HLN now with JVM.

Oh dear. JVM does have new info.

1. Daniel has long rap sheet of arrests, most recently meth (very recent). Caught with 3 meth labs. Trial coming up in 3 weeks. He is addicted to it and makes it.

2. Daniel and Misti have been separated for some time. Daniel is bio father (speculation was he was step-father)

3. Daniel has a 16 yo son and was at home with him when girls went missing.

I'm sure there is, but in all honesty, I haven't noticed it as much here as in my hometown. Being near the interstate, there's a high probability, but in Iowa City it is a much more obvious issue (despite pan handling laws) where you'll see pan handlers on exit ramps and intersections. I'm sure there are (more so in the downtown Waterloo area), but I haven't noticed it much in the Evansdale/southern Waterloo area. I did wonder about this though. In Iowa City there is a "tent city" off of the highway (mostly known to locals) where there is a high concentration of transients living in a wooded area behind businesses, but I've only been in Waterloo a year, so I have no solid answer here.

I would think as far as the community goes, yes, we'd notice a transient in our neighborhoods. Especially in Evansdale, you tend to know more about the neighbors.

What about Aunt Tammy? I thought that was Wylma's other daughter - but heard people talking about a Jessica yesterday I think. Tammy was on JVM and said she searched at the lake with Grandma.

I wasn't aware Lyric & Misty live with her mother Wylma (Grandma).

Aunt Tammy on the JVM show just said that Dan and Misty have been separated for some time due to his meth addiction

Maybe someone they knew was fishing back there? This person invites them to fish with him for a little while....

then says, wow its so hot... I've got soda or ice cream at home - do you want to ride with me to grab my cooler and some drinks - we'll be right back

or, will you help me carry my fishing poles, tackle box to the car?

It's funny you mention that. When I was looking at Ollipop's pics and some of the obscure trails, that came to my mind. We fish alot and those trails look to be walked by fisher people trying for better access to the lake looking for a good fishing hole.

I can imagine that would be a good spot to hide off the beaten trail so to speak.
