Somebody dropped their bikes there and threw the purse over the fence. It's even possible they stopped on the side of the highway, dropped the bikes over the outside fence, then threw the purse over towards the lake.

Goto Bing maps and pull up the birds-eye view of Evansdale IA

http://wcfcourier.com/news/evansdale_search/
this shows where bikes were found

SBM

According to reports by locals, I-380 (the highway by the lake) is a designated truck route and normally has heavy traffic during the day on week days.

Right now, the traffic is even heavier because one side of the interstate is closed and all the traffic is squished onto the other side, one lane in each direction. There is very little room to serve as shoulders. Traffic is now almost bumper to bumper during the day.

There isn't enough room to pull a car off the road and leave it parked for even a moment, let alone enough time to struggle down that steep embankment with two bikes and a purse.

My California born and raised husband claims that Iowa only has two seasons: winter and highway construction time.

I tell him he has no room to criticise because he comes from a place with only one season (by Iowa standards).

Could be, but may also have been due to:

Morrissey also has a pending domestic assault charge stemming from an August incident where he allegedly assaulted Misty Morrissey.

Thank you for the link, epiphany. I am confident that LE is conducting parallel investigations; they need to look both at the family and at the possibility of a stranger abduction. Personally, the father, DM, has given me a bad feeling from the beginning. But, that could very well be because of his past. The recent domestic violence charge, and the aunt's comments regarding the lawyer's words really concern me though. To NOT talk or take anymore polygraph tests?? It also seems like, (although I could be totally wrong), that he is not too pleased that they are draining the lake and focusing on it so much. Anyway, hopefully the family and the public will have some answers soon.

migranny, take heart.

At this point in many investigations, LE sounds like they haven't the faintest idea and probably wouldn't recognise a clue if it ran up and bit them on the nose.

It takes a lot more time to tell whether LE was truly clueless or whether they just sounded that way.

For instance, in the Sierra LaMar case, it sounded like the police knew nothing for close to a month. It was extensively discussed on WS, if you want to read about it for yourself.

Then, all of a sudden, it turns out that LE knew a lot, right from the beginning. It was almost shocking to realise just how much LE had known without so much as a leak to the media. I think I, for one, am rather jaded by all the instances where stuff gets leaked to the media because it took me totally by surprise.

There is now a suspect in jail awaiting trial.

So, give it more time. The police may know nothing or they may have a lot of evidence that the public doesn't even dream exists.

Then why can't they just say that? It's not like admitting they have credible leads/theories is out out of line. If they don't want to answer, then say "I can't answer that as it may hinder the investigation, but what I can tell you is..." I just feel like it's pointless to have a press conference where people are allowed to ask questions if they aren't going to answer.

If you have nothing new, then put it on the news that "no additional details are able to be released at this time". Done. Abben, who is doing the press conferences is just looking ridiculous when asked some of the questions. For cryin' out loud the FBI has released/confirmed details to MSM he claims to have no knowledge of.

I mean honestly, how long can people continue to have faith in LE when 7 dang days into the investigation they have "no new information"? No one is going to argue with them withholding details, but a general statement of "we are confident in how the investigation is going, we are making progress, etc." would be a lot more comforting for locals at this point. If you have NOTHING like you claim, then why shouldn't I be concerned for my kids safety with them still missing?:banghead:

Does anyone remember or have a link to where exactly the family searched for the girls before they reported them missing?

Specifically, does anyone know if the family searched the trail and lake before the kids were reported missing?

  • #426
Thank you for posting, however the statistical likelihood that two girls drowned silently like this at exactly the same time is one in a billion, at least.

Not really. It happened in my area just this summer.
The girls, along with three other friends, arrived at the park around 2:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon. Officials say the other friends left Maurer and Kwiatkowski at the beach, and when they returned a short time later, the girls were not there. However, the girls' personal items, including cell phones, purses, and shoes, were still on the beach. http://www.wkow.com/story/18734815/deputies-search-for-missing-teenagers

FINALLY! I found an article that states who found the bikes and where they were when he saw them at 12:20 pm.

Yeah. I asked this earlier on. Guy on bike says he almost ran into the bikes or had to swerve to miss the bikes. (can't remember exact quote). However, later on it was reported the bikes were not thrown down. Please forgive my lack of posting specific quotes. How the heck did the bikes get moved!!?? Did the bikes get moved??

Very good points. I wish LE would elaborate on the condition of the bikes/purse. I am 100% in support of LE (most of them anyway) and respect their need to keep things private. Working closely with criminal cases, I just don't see the point of allowing the public (who oddly enough are most helpful in missing persons cases) to "believe" there's no immediate danger. If you don't know what happened...then you don't know that there isn't somebody lurking in the neighborhood, targeting young girls...

Thanks! So there is a possibility the bikes were moved, maybe by the girls, a perp or even someone local who just moved them out of the path (perhaps they have come forward about an innocent deed/we don't know). If 2-3 is the last confirmed sighting, then it is possible they were playing in the woods, left and came back. Especially, if they remembered they forgot the purse. I think it is important to figure out if the bikes were moved. That could change the timeline quite a bit.

As for there not being a threat to the public, I think that is a common statement. Even if the girls were abducted, I highly doubt someone is out looking for more victims in the same area so soon. I am sure they are keeping a low profile, or helping with the search or are in another state by now. The other question that comes to mind is if maybe one of the girls was a target and the other just happened to be there? That being said, while I know the families have some "shady" associates, it is more likely, one of the girls was an object of desire by someone. Just a thought or two...

In addition to all the shady characters the family may know from the drug world, I hope LE is also checking out anyone at the church they attend who might be suspicious. Just a few weeks ago in Delaware, Nicole Bennett was murdered by the church janitor who also happened to be a sex offender, but he wasn't listed on the registry.

I know that most of you long time members remember cases where the dad was a suspect and later cleared-but the DAD'S fully cooperated. Elizabeth Smart, Polly Klaas?

I'm not sure either of those examples apply.

In both of those cases, there was at least one eyewitness to the crime (Elizabeth's sister, Polly's friends). In both cases, the eyewitness description did not match the appearance of the fathers. In both cases, the fathers were cleared by LE relatively quickly; it was the general public that kept thinking the fathers were suspects in part because LE did not state the fathers had been cleared.

So it's hard for me to predict how Ed Smart or Marc Klaas would have reacted had he been subjected to extensive interrogations, accusations of guilt from interrogators, etc.

Again, I do respect both of those men. But I don't think even they can predict how they would have reacted had they been in Dan Morrissey's shoes because I think it's one of those things that you cannot know until you are there.

What kind of body of water is this and what is the current like? In my family we had 3 siblings die at a family picnic trying to save each other. This was about 60 years ago mind you but the river hasn't changed since then.

Snipped and BBM...My guess would be if the police gave any indication they knew something and could not divulge it, if someone did abduct the girls, it could cause the perp to do something drastic and permenant. If the perp thinks the police know nothing, it may buy time for LE to find them. If the perp thinks the police are narrowing in on them...really bad things could happen if the girls are still alive...IMOO.

I very much agree w you. IMO those are not good examples and also times have changed a lot since those two examples. Mainly the internet. Jmo

threecrazykids..........
if I lived in the area I would have my kids tied to me with ductape!
Until the truth was told it was accidental or someone in custody.
With so many Meth labs, drug addicts and sex offenders in all cities,
it scares me to death for children especially.
I don't feel the girls drowned, they would of been found near the dock or edge,
I feel that there would be disturbed grass, mud something to show they slipped.
I am so sorry but I do feel there is some sort of foul play.
and LE does not want a panic situation.

You said it Sistah.

*No reason to believe foul play involved.

*Searching lake, it appears, exclusively. (although we aren't always privy to the full scope of an investigation)

*Family being very cooperative.

*Family took polys and have alibis.

*Family refusal to take more polys a distraction.

Um, well, to recap..... so even though LE doesn't think there is foul play, which IMO is a very foolhardy statement to make so early into an investigation of two missing LITTLE girls, the parents have been questioned and poly'd. And NOW LE states that should, in the future, hypothetically, if LE required MORE polys in this no-foul-play disappearance case, the parents refuse to comply, THAT would be a distraction?

Do I have this Godawful mess right? :(

I missed the presser. Is that really what they said? The family's refusal to take a future polygraphs is a distraction? Really?

Whaaaat? What in the world does that mean? Polygraphs are not even reliable. Is there a hidden meaning there? I don't get it. :waitasec:

Wow, big hugs to you!!

I grew up on a lake and when there was a drowning, it was always multiples.

more on the specialized sonar

Authorities stopped draining the lake after three days Thursday because the team's sonar equipment needs at least 6 feet of water to function properly. They previously said they wouldn't finish draining it until Friday.

The team uses two kinds of sonar _ one that can detect debris in murky water and another that provides a 360-degree analysis of the bottom of the lake. That device is mounted on a tripod that sends signals to computers on the surface helping direct divers where to search.

I thought about that as well, especially because L is described as a big girl. If she has been bullied, it could have led to a game of "keep away" by bullies with her purse and then it was tossed over a fence. Or, if she had low self-esteem due to this, it could make her an easy target by a perp who compliments her about how pretty she is etc..

My take on the seemingly conflicting statements from police are that maybe the statements aren't as unrelated as they sound. Some have mentioned how they're questioning dad as if he's a suspect, but still focusing on the lake. Maybe the thought is that the girls were already harmed (killed?) & DUMPED in the lake rather than them riding along, stopping to swim & drowning silently.

Police MIGHT not even believe that the girls were even out riding - hence not taking the grass waterer's sighting very seriously. Maybe they're thinking that they were harmed & then the area was staged to appear as an abduction.

I just don't know. I don't get the feeling that the family is involved. Maybe some of their seedy friends had eyes for the girls & took them when they got a chance.

Just random thoughts & ALL opinion.
