Williams trial to be moved again
Lawyer seeks jury pool with higher African American representation

"Just days before an Indiana man was set to go on trial for the death of a Fort Dodge woman, a judge has ordered the trial continued and its location to be moved for a second time.

Phillip Williams, 26, of Lafayette, Indiana, was scheduled to begin his trial on Monday in Cerro Gordo County on a first-degree murder charge....

The trial was originally moved from Webster County to Cerro Gordo County because of all the attention the case received in Webster County which defense attorneys claimed prevented Williams and Mackenzie Knigge, 27, of Clare, from receiving a fair trial.

Knigge is also charged with first-degree murder in Gomez’s death.

However, on Tuesday, Williams’ defense attorney, Katherine Flickinger, of Nevada, filed a motion objecting to the composition of the jury pool.

In her motion, Flickinger said, out of 130 potential jurors, only one identified themself as black....

Judge Thomas Bice, of the 2nd Judicial District, agreed with Flickinger’s motion and granted her request to continue the trial and to move it to another county.

No new trial date and no new venue had been decided on Tuesday afternoon....

Knigge is now set to stand trial on June 10.

Williams’ attorneys filed a motion for a change of venue just two days after Knigge’s trial was moved.

Both Williams and Knigge are being held in the Webster County Jail on $1 million cash bond."
