Hope I am allowed to do this...if not, please forgive me.

POWESHIEK COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- There is a large police presence off of Highway 21 in Poweshiek County.

police-presence-poweshiek.jpg

The police presence is between Guernsey and Deep River.

Property owners in the area tell TV9 the police presence is related to the search for missing 20-year-old Mollie Tibbetts.

<modsnip 10 percent>

Investigators have told TV9 previously that they were confident on Tibbetts' digital footprint, but they did not release any information as to where that was.

Stay with TV9 for the latest information.

You are allowed to cite MSM (mainstream media, as this is), but you can only post part of the article -- 10 percent, as noted above. You may not post SM (social media) such as Facebook, etc.

You're doing just fine. Glad to have you with us.

my girls always have their phones in their hands, if not in their hands in their pocket, strapped on their arm or tucked in their bra so I don't find that weird at all, we grew up small town South Dakota and have never locked our doors as most people around here dont

If she had just returned from a run she may have had her phone attached to her arm in some way so that she could listen to music. Also, a lot of young people are constantly on their phone, she could have been in the middle of texting, reading social media, watching a video, etc when she was interrupted by something and her phone was still in her hand.

Edited because I couldn't find a corroborating link. MOO. It is possible that Mollie had one of those phone armbands.

No douuuubt. Most people in my circle “in real life” just don’t get it. I’ve tried to have discussions with them, never works out. Moo. Al though I know many of you here have great DHs who contribute, like the fabulous Mr Pink!

Btw this IS real life. Mollie is real, her family is real, you know what I mean.

Of course. All I mean by saying "perfect real life example" is that it's a perfect example from my everyday, off-line life vs. my online personality/life. I post on many message boards and routinely refer to things that happen off-board as "in real life." I didn't mean anything by it. Sorry if it came off that way.

Gosh I too am having flashbacks to recent cases like Mariah and Lucas, A&L...with the trucks lined up, ugh. Regarding the EMS I agree with a previous poster, I think that they often have one there on-site in case someone is injured. It's also quite hot, heat stroke etc. can be a concern. At least hoping that's why...

I googled
For me, her having her phone on her makes it more likely that she was taken while she was outside. If you're inside, you generally don't keep your phone in your pocket. If she was caught off guard while she was inside, it would take incredible presence of mind for her to take her phone with her (in the fear of the moment). Of course she might have known the perpetrator, and initially gone outside willingly.
Googled this phone in pocket thing. Surprised to learn about 1/2 the people who own a phone in her age group keep it in a pocket at all times.

I’m a little confused by the length of the search. It started around 8am and finished about 3:30 local time from what I can tell. Maybe 4 local. It looks like such a large area that I would think if they had credible information that lead them there and they didn’t find anything they wouldn’t give up with several hours of daylight left. But if they found something - say there was a tip that a missing item was there- if they located the missing item would they just stop looking? Seems like that would make them look even more. I don’t doubt they know what they are doing but I’m unsure which way to interpret the event.

Iowa perspective on locking doors:
My husband was born and raised in Iowa with four generations all living in the same small town. He walks into his relatives houses unannounced and yells for them. They usually respond with, “We’re in the kitchen,” or “basement,” or “Come upstairs.” He has relatives in their 60’s, 70’s, 80’s who have lived in this town all of their life and they have never locked their home, not even when they go on vacation because family will come and go if they need to water plants, borrow something, grab a snack. It’s weird to me, and I lock everything at all times, but this is the farming culture here. Everyone is family and doors are always open.
"woohooo, anyone home?" is a standard when going to someone's home and the door is unlocked. Sometimes people knock, sometimes they knock and then open the door and yell "woohoo" other times, they just walk in though that is becoming less and less in the last decade or so. But you best believe the locals know a 'foreigner' which could be just someone from the next county, or country, and they notice all vehicles, and when someone gets a new one, it's like a huge event and everyone is calling to tell you so and so got a new blue truck! There's not much that goes unnoticed... unless you're me. They moved a HOUSE which had to by my house...and I slept right through it. :(

Knowing as many college age kids as I do I’m surprised it’s only 1/2.

Is the pig farm and the area they searched today within close proximity to one another?

They can arrest without a warrant. They cannot keep them in custody for more than 48 hrs (variance by jurisdiction) without probable cause and charges by the prosecutor.
If they don't have enough probable cause within 48 hours, then they probably don't have the right person. Example when they released Area Castro's brothers. The point is that the police can arrest any person at any time. If they aren't making any arrests, then that means they don't have any POIs. Anybody who thinks they are waiting to get enough evidence, is just wishful thinking.

I Hope they read the site rules and guidelines
Which are quite different from the FB Group rules. #fingerscrossed

In this particular case (Mollie), if they had a POI at this point, what in the world would they charge him/her with? Specifically, what crime?

Just because there hasn't been an arrest doesn't mean LE doesn't have a POI in mind, imo.

ETA: They are indeed searching for evidence....they are searching for Mollie!

I don't know about "good chance" but there is a chance. And we really don't know what leads LE does or doesn't have at this point.
When they start having press conferences with no content, that's a clue, and not a good one.

You have to go through a lot of clicking.. To summarize the twitter post..., Someone logged into Mollie's facebook account, her own account and posted an update to say: "Mollie wants to be here. I don't know why everyone wants to take her away from me. I've waited so long for this. No one is going to ruin this for us." It was posted at 11:09 p.m. I don't know what day.

It was actually posted on a fake “Mollie” FB (recently created, two photos- one lifted from her real account). It was shared on Twitter and then retweeted. Most likely false (and if true, I’m betting LE is aware).

This is why WS doesn’t allow social media except in a few circumstances: the victim, the POI (if named by LE or MSM), LE official pages, MSM pages, and official “Find...” pages (if its determined that the page was set up by family or a representative).

I’m betting this post and others relating to it will be removed by mods.

Does your town not have crime at all? Have you ever searched the sex offender registry?

I have relatives in a small-ish town in SD and they always never lock things....even though there's literally a sex offender a street over.

It's a hard concept for me to grasp. My house was locked and broken into while we slept when I was a kid. And as a teenager, my car (also locked) was stolen. I feel like nothing is ever safe but I'm going to do as much as I can. (For reference...both of these things happened in a moderate sized city in Iowa.)
