That's my reaction to this too - I think the perp would be willing to plead guilty but the lawyer will try anything to get him off. I don't think the lawyer will be successful, but I think he will try.

I hope there is DNA evidence to back up the confession.

He may have helped to protect the evidence himself by covering her body with cornstalks.

I know people blackout and I understand that; and I feel for folks with that condition. However here, I am doubting it

I would say in this case you have good reason.

If this does go to trial, highly unlikely that it will be in Poweshiek county....I'm sure Johnny Cochran will request trial to be moved somewhere else in Iowa....really doesn't matter where IMO....

yes, from the particulars it sounds like they only hire a few folk very infrequently and they thought they were doing it right. It just goes to prove we need something in place that folks can easily understand which communicates with other FED agencies in the loop. IRS and E verify databases need to talk to each other!
IRS, Social Security, and BMV need to talk to each other as well.

I felt super uncomfortable observing Allen in court today. It was like watching a third string quarterback come on the field at the two minute warning and the score is tied. Both the State's attorney and the Judge, easily rebutted his poorly worded objections.

The last thing we want is a bumbling attorney defending Rivera! That's what mistrials and appeals are made of. We don't want Mollie's family to suffer any more than they already have.
My assumption was that he is a public defender? In a town that small, and given the rural area, I doubt they've ever had any case that would prepare them for this. I'm just wondering how he'll do once the trial starts...

None of them had the Mollie missing poster or any reference to her on their FB pages either. I'm going to guess they knew. I think he told them early on. JMO

Wonder why none turned him in for the money! I’m sure they regret that now!

I'm way behind here, just trying to catch up since yesterday's sad news. Forgive me if this has been discussed:

Who thinks this was his first "gig". One doesn't just wake up one day and commit such a violent crime.

So upset for Mollie and her family, she was just beginning her story and had so many more chapters to write. Rest easy Mollie, send strength to your surviving spirits.

given his age, I do think so. but I wouldn't be surprised if he has previously stalked, date raped or other violence toward women.

Indeed, they said multiple times they couldn't get into that during the press conference, but id be VERY surprised if she wasn't. This seems to be a sexually motivated crime.

Im guessing he didn't want to admit to that and that's why he conveniently "blacked out" during that portion of the crime.
Agreed.

Put him in a room with Mark Fuhrman. Then we'd get the truth.

No, he was privately retained.

I'll bet he got rid of her phone in the beginning.

No, he was privately obtained.
Then I'm thinking that must be the owner of the farm he worked for? I noticed it mentioned one of the translators was privately detained.

I don’t think any of his story is true. I think Mollie was a fighter. She had taken self-defense classes and worked with victims of domestic violence. I don’t think he approached her, she brushed him off, he approached her again, and then she threatened him with calling the police. She would’ve taken action quickly I think. I bet he caught her off guard completely.

IMO.
I also don't believe CR's story. Although there's video of his car near Mollie's known running path, I don't believe it includes evidence of him attacking Mollie or dragging her into his car/trunk or wherever. Also, there's report today of a mutual girlfriend
(HV) of Mollie's that had been texting with CR for the past weeks, and also visited with him recently when she was out with a group. I'm inclined to think CR was not invisible to the local girls of Brooklyn, and that Mollie may have also known him (the baby Dad to her class/team mate's daughter), and possibly accepted a ride from him. The black out rage likely ensued after Mollie rebuffed his advances. I'm anxious to read more about evidence from the car, and Mollie's autopsy. All that have spoken for her tell us that Mollie would not have gone down without a fight. MOO. #JUSTICE FOR MOLLIE

EDIT to add link to HV story

I'm really curious about the lawyer. Who is paying him? I know that when the police arrested the monster, they had to ask him if he wanted to contact his embassy. Perhaps the lawyer is being supplied by the Mexican Embassy in Iowa? If so, why would they choose him? I'm not slamming either the lawyer or the embassy. I'm just curious.

So he can text very well in ENGLISH but he needs TWO translators in court. Oh yea. There’s more to this guy we don’t know.

Not saying you're wrong. But also saying there's a difference between being conversational in a language, and knowing/fully understanding legal jargon in a language.

Yes. A top agricultural college often does. These are very hard working people who grew up near farms. I would guess many worked hard in family farms growing up.

Immigrant workers in the other hand do not usually finish high school and go to hard labor jobs as soon as they can. We never used any on the farm. But they don’t receive a good hourly wage and used to be a certain percentage of the crop. Then some owners deduct the cost of housing and food if that’s included. Not much left at the end of the season. Rivera, imo is far below the poverty line. There may well be many other influences in this case.

It also appears that an attorney named Richards was reprimanded in 2993. Maybe due to the BILLION DOLLAR LAWSUIT HE FILED Against TAMA COUNTY officials.

There are lawyers who represent the less fortunate , the underdog just because.

Imo there may be a bunch of quirks in this before a verdict.
I’m just sorry we have to be here at all. No one deserves this. No one.

Charliegizmo49 - I don't know... I went my state's leading AG University- back when the name included "polytech' and it prided itself in its in state research and publications. There were extension services all over the state and test farms associated with the school all over the state. Maybe times have changed? I just really expected IA, with its widely recognized status at the leader in CORN production in the USA (note: not sweet corn - when it comes to sweet - be it corn, peaches or tea, in my opinion, GA takes the lead) to be a leading researcher and publisher for best farm practices.

And attorneys who "just represent the less fortunate or underdog" --- first this is not such a case.
An example of that would be a single mother with children who have been harmed by lead paint or lead in their water fighting a government agency or employer or landlord. Now she is an underdog.

Anyone who takes a client who is charged with a heinous crime like here is an entirely different set of circumstances and the client is no underdog!

And the way this attorney made sure to file his first brief announcing this case is a 'high profile' case is someone whom I view as suspect - he is either in it for the money, the exposure, some sort of quid pro quo, or stroking his own ego. ALL OF COURSE in my opinion.

This may have been mentioned before, but as I watched the court appearance today, CR does not seem to speak or understand English. Yet, he was able to understand and remember that Mollie told him to get away from her (in English)? That makes no sense.

This man obviously thought only of himself. In addition to Mollie's family and friends, his girlfriend and little girl will have to live with this for the rest of their lives.
It seems that he at the very least, speaks some English. I’m basing this on a purported conversation between him and an acquaintance, where she asked him what he thought happened to Mollie.

I am very old. As I age I've realized that I, overall, judge less in black and white and see so much more grey than I did when I was younger (lol, the grandchildren love me for this). I've become so much more understanding and forgiving of mistakes and poor decisions as I've reflected on my own past.
But it angers me that a beautiful young soul can be murdered, her assailant can confess to the crime ~ and yet we are required by law to play the cards by all of the legal requirements. Was he crazy, sick, deprived, misled, manipulated, or otherwise less guilty? Really? The end result is the same: one person decided to take the life of another. Is is really fair to make the victim's family and loved one's lives to further suffer for years of trials and appeals (and publicity) to decide who did what to whom?
As an old and avid follower of the Caylee/Casey Anthony trial, I balk at seeing this person (he is not even a "man" in my mind) have the same opportunity to escape the consequences of his horrendous actions. Casey Anthony's life today has soured me on our legal system. Juries can fail and legal doesn't alway equal justice.
Praying for Mollie's family and loved ones. Life is NOT fair! Hoping the avid WSers here may sleuth out and find facts the State can use in their case.
xoxo from EU

BBM I don't think he was any of these things; just evil. And I want him to pay for the irreparable devastation and lifetime of suffering he has inflicted on Mollie's family.

P.S. Age is just a number. ;)
