Not sure about that. A signature works too.

We do not know his level of English understanding. Evidence from texts he knows quite a bit. But it would be reasonable after interrogation started to get Miranda in two languages. And signed. These are not amateurs. You have state and federal officials. But i don't think we know their procedure.

Not even sure if the authorities has to interrogate him for some of the information. He could have volunteered all the information, which in case they would not have to read him his rights -- which are read after an official interrogation starts. Custodial interrogation. And of course law enforcement can record and act on information even if it was obtained without Miranda in interrogation. It just isn't admissible in court.

If a suspect runs up and spills information, that's not a custodial interrogation. Only if the subject is detained does he have the right to be silent etc.

Again, this suspect has not been found guilty. He has not been in a trial. So I don't see why he is condemned until he is judged by his peers. That is a basic Constitutional right.

This is probably off topic, so delete it.

James Comey the former head of the FBI was at home with a brother when a Chicago-area bugler broke in. Comey describes it in his book. Comey was tied up, I believe and threatened at gun point. When let loose, Comey run away, but doubled back, only to be caught by this guy again, and threatened again with a firearm.

It turned out the bugler was also a serial rapist. Comey had an older sister who luckily didn't arrive home until the incident was over. But it could have been disaster.

That is why Comey became interested in law enforcement.

Cruising.

Different era. And no one'cruised for sex'. Unless you want to sex up a '57 Chevy.

There was no Internet. Drinking age was 21 (it went down later). So people got into their cars and drove up and down simply to see other people and to wave or to park and talk. Ever see 'American Graffiti'? that was cruising. Showing off cars, listening to the radio and seeing all the friends. People took their dogs cruising, which is a little over the top.

Frankly I don't see why people want to meet in bars. You seriously want to meet a partner in a bar? Try work, activities, school, church, Peace Corps, safe online. :)

At least cruising didn't involve alcohol (at least not us). Hard to find better things to do than listen to the Beatles, Stones, Who, Grateful Dead, Beach Boys, etc etc. Worst trouble you could get into was squealing your tires.
I remember those days, fondly, cruising around town. No bad intentions ever except to wave to others doing the same. Occasionally we ventured out of town to go "haunted house hunting." Still, it does seem that CR was cruising the town, and stalked Mollie after spotting her. jmo

I would call it stalking. But that's a technicality.

You know what type of people cruise for sex? And then end killing someone?

Serial killers..

That is language and opinion that I understand!

Normal people don't cruise around looking for a crime of opportunity victim, grab women off the street, and murder them. It strikes me as bizarre that anyone, other than a murderer, would try to paint this as a date gone wrong.

I think MT

Agreed. Have read that a person needs to do whatever is necessary to avoid forced entry into a vehicle. Your chances of a positive ending decreases significantly once inside.

Other than CBR leading LE to MT's body and the camera showing the Malibu doing laps; I'm not confident with anything he says.
I always tell my kids that. NEVER get into a vehicle. Fight and scream like a crazy person before that option. IMO Mollie never even had that opportunity....my worst nightmare as a parent.

Kinda like a burglar, upon shooting the home owner after crawling in a window, said it was a little mix up at a party he was attending.

Oh my lord, it sure did for us...

I might add serial rapist to that too
A serial rapist / stalker who turned into a killer during a sexual assault seems most likely for CR when he attacked and then killed Mollie IMO.

When he hid her body in the cornfield, he left her on the ground and covered her with corn leaves. If he had 'planned ahead / it was premeditated' to sexually assault and also kill her, I think he would have brought a shovel or something to assist in burying or hiding her body below ground surface, where it may never be found.

But he 'snapped', assaulted and killed her, and in the 'heat of the moment' picked the remote corn field, thinking it was good enough for awhile if not longer, and he waited and watched news media and LE progress, biding his time and assuming her body would never be found in all those miles and miles of cornfields.

He could also have had a backup plan, under which he could go back and bury her body later before the harvest machinery turned something up of her remains/clothing, but only if absolutely necessary because it would increase his chances of getting caught returning to the scene of the crime. JMO of course.

Heading east out of town on 385th was never a part of her known route. Not to mention it makes no sense to start an out-of-town run that close to dusk.

Looking at that intersection in street view and trying to imagine where CR could have just pulled over, got out and run along side her is problematic as well. Not to mention that road does have through traffic (not a whole lot by any means, but certainly not isolated).

There’s something in CR’s story here that doesn’t fit... Weather permitting I’m going to head over and get some panaramic and perspective pictures of that intersection.
The entire town is no bigger than half a square mile. She could pretty much cover the entire town on a 45 minute run. I'm guessing she did go on 385th sometimes out of boredom. This was especially a boring night since there was nobody at the house with her except for the dogs.

As I look at the entire population of BGM, under 2000, I wonder how did Mollie and CR not know each other especially when CR's ex-gf knew Mollie. Surely they may have hung out together in a group at some point. And why does it seem like so few people in town knew Mollie when she had lived there for 10 years. How did her neighbors only recognize her as "some girl who runs here sometimes"? She seemed to have more friends back in CA than she did in Iowa. Only her family and a couple friends have said anything about her.

I sure hope we have laid the “cruising for girls” theories to rest once and for all! That was a high school thing for us back in the 80’s. I have two kids, different generations and neither of them have ever even heard of it. I hope we can chalk that one up to us all now being OLD!!!!

I think there is no doubt Mollie was targeted.

“He had mentioned I believe that he had seen her before, in what context I don’t know if it was just in passing or had seen her in town somewhere, but it sounded like he at least had recognized her," he added....”

I don't know MT's known running routes, but running to the end of 385th ave. makes sense to me for her normal 45 minute run. If she left around 7:30 or a little later, and her pace was still at least an 8 minute mile as I've seen noted, that would put her near the end of 385th around 8pm and home before 8:25 (or sooner if going to Mom's). Sunset was at 9:02pm that night. JMO

For Brooklyn, sunset was more like 8:41 - 8:45 with the end of civilian twilight (when you must put your headlights on) a half-hour after sunset, so no later than 9:15 for being to dark for MT to run, and maybe 9:30 for CR stumbling around in a dark corn field with a body over his shoulder, and having to use his phone to find his way back to Brooklyn because it was then dark.

So, by your estimation MT would have had an hour or more daylight to reach mom's house for dinner and to pick up the car and a shirt. Plenty of time if she was going out or coming back on 385th by 8:28. And it would not be out of the question for MT to be on 385 "the blacktop" if she were training for a half-marathon or to trim up/slim down for the beach, for her up coming trip to the DR for the wedding.

Other than a few drainage ditches and cropland, I don't see anywhere between the Middle and Boundary area all the way to the end at 385th and 200 that would be a good place for CR to have assaulted/killed MT. If he only managed to get her into his trunk/car, do you think he would have driven for awhile before getting her out? Or do you think he'd do it right away? I think right away. There are places all over he could have taken her, but IMO, this is the closest. There is a pull-off just on the south side of the tracks, a wooded area, water nearby...

Or a guy driving a "woody" looking for action and adventure or whatever comes his way...

LE has CCTV footage of the car in question following Mollie; I wonder what the difference in time is between the time the car in question was seen in the CCTV footage and the next car that went in exactly the same direction (possibly taking the same route)? I wonder if we are talking minutes or hours.

I was so certain RT had inside info on who the perp was, he was very close to being correct.

He thought the person had the wrong idea about Mollie’s intentions and was holding her.

I think she may have told him that CR or some guy was kind coming on to her, was creeped out, etc.
I agree. I think that when Mollie and her dad last spoke in a long phone conversation before she disappeared, they may have discussed dealing with unwanted attention and being safe on the streets / on campus. She could have said something like "Don't worry, dad, I always have my phone with me, and can hit the emergency button or will call 911 if I'm uncomfortable."

Friday, August 31st:
*Prelim Hearing (@ 2pm CT) – IA – Mollie Cecilia Tibbetts (20) (July 18, 2018; found Aug. 21, 2018) – Cristhian Bahena Rivera (24) arrested & charged (8/21/18) with 1st degree murder. $1M cash only bond.
ICE logged an immigration detainer on Rivera. Confessed to killing Mollie.
8/22/18 Update: 1st appearance – Defense asks for gag order; files document that CBR is working legally in Iowa; employer offered info that it is not true. Judge denies gag order request. Did not enter plea. Next Prelim Hearing on 8/31, if convicted it would be a life sentence without possibility of parole. No death penalty in Iowa. Maggistrate Crookham-Johnson on Wednesday continued to allow cameras in the courtroom. She denied the defense motion for a private hearing, saying media coverage of the initial appearance wouldn’t violate Rivera’s right to a fair trial because he wasn’t going to be asked that day to make statements about the facts of the case. After hearing defense files motion for private hearing, on the defense’s request, Crookham also set a schedule for a district court to review a motion to implement a gag order on the case (no date mentioned).

retty much knew everyone in my school but other than that not so much even as an acquaintance. Think about it....how many people have 1400 FB friends? And those are many tones less than an acquaintance
