Cops Wonder: If Mollie Tibbetts' Accused Killer Has No Record — Who Jumps to Murder That Fast?

The 24-year-old accused of killing Iowa college student Mollie Tibbetts — who had been missing for a month until her body was discovered on Tuesday— had no criminal record before he was charged this week with first-degree murder.

“All of a sudden he just does it,” says Mitch Mortvedt, assistant director of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, referring to suspect Cristhian Rivera. “Who escalates to abduction, kidnapping and homicide that fast?”

“That is part of the ongoing investigation,” Mortvedt tells PEOPLE. “We want to dig into his background — and not just the last four weeks. Who is this guy? Where has he been? What has he done? How can we verify that?”

Attorney for Mollie Tibbetts' suspected killer Cristhian Rivera fights back

"That's your rhetoric on it," attorney Allan Richards told Fox News' Martha MacCallum on "The Story." Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said Wednesday that Rivera, 24, has been in the U.S. illegally, and lived in Iowa for four to seven years.

"You want to jump to say they’re facts," Richards said. "Have these people been under oath? Have these people provided the opportunity to Cristhian to present his point of view on the matter?"

The aunt said that if Rivera is guilty of the crimes of which he's accused, she just wants to know, "Why?"

"Why did you do this? You're a talented young man. You had a future ahead of you. Why? Why did it have to come to this? That's what I would ask him," the aunt said. She said the family was awaiting DNA results, which she hoped would clear Rivera's name.

WATCH: Retracing Steps of Mollie Tibbetts on Street Where She Was Last Seen Alive

On "Fox & Friends" Thursday, former homicide investigator Ted Williams retraced the steps of Mollie Tibbetts from the early-evening jog during which she was fatally attacked.

Williams showed viewers the Brooklyn, Iowa, neighborhood where the 20-year-old University of Iowa was last seen alive.

According to law enforcement officers, Tibbetts was followed by 24-year-old Cristhian Rivera, an illegal immigrant from Mexico.

Attorney for Mollie Tibbetts' suspected killer Cristhian Rivera fights back

In addition to speaking to Richards, Fox News on Thursday interviewed the aunt of Iris Monarrez — Rivera's ex-girlfriend and the mother of his daughter, who went to high school with Tibbetts.

The aunt said that Rivera — whom she described as a good father to his daughter — lived with Monarrez until about a year and a half ago, when the couple broke up. Monarrez has since moved out of the area.

"He was a good person. He was a jokester," the aunt said of Rivera, through a translator. "For us, he was a good and normal person. Not aggressive or violent, no. He was normal just like us."

Relatives, according to Monarrez's aunt, "can't believe" Rivera's alleged involvement, and said they were hoping "it's probably an error and we'll wake up from this nightmare."

In the weeks when Tibbetts was missing, Rivera didn't act differently, the aunt said. She added that when the family would get together, "we would talk about the situation," and Rivera "would comment as well and we would all say that we were surprised and scared because this is a quiet town."

Iowa DOT confirms Tibbetts' murder suspect did not have Iowa license or ID

After reviewing their records, the Iowa Department of Transportation confirms no Iowa license of ID was issued to Cristhian Bahena Rivera. They say he was never issued one under his name, any alternate name, or similar name.

The DOT says the review included using a facial recognition system to compare his likeness to all images on record to assure he did not obtain an Iowa license or ID under a different or false name.

Iowa law prohibits the DOT from issuing a license or identification card to a person who is an undocumented immigrant.

Police Wonder: If Mollie Tibbetts' Accused Killer Has No Record — Who Escalates to Murder That Fast?

And so, among the mysteries still swirling in the case, is the nagging question: What may have motivated someone like that to do something like this?

“All of a sudden he just does it,” says Mitch Mortvedt, assistant director of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, referring to suspect Cristhian Rivera. “Who escalates to abduction, kidnapping and homicide that fast?”

Mollie Tibbetts' suspected killer acted normally during search, coworker says

Rivera's coworker told CBS News' Adriana Diaz that someone who would have done something like this would be nervous and not be able to eat and he seemed like nothing was wrong. She said she doesn't want to believe it's him.

She also said Rivera – who entered the U.S. as a minor – is calm, not violent, and a good father. She said the suspect has a three-year-old daughter with his ex-girlfriend. They were at his hearing this week.

"He's like anybody else. It's just hard to understand what happened out on that road," Rivera's lawyer Allan Richards said.

Mollie Tibbetts’ Body Was Found 500 Yards Into Cornfield: ‘He Tried to Camouflage Her’ 24, 2018

Mitch Mortvedt, assistant director of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, says the Guernsey field was not owned by Yarbee Farms, the dairy farm that employed suspect Christhian Rivera, 24, but that Rivera “was familiar” with the area because he lived and worked a few miles away.

Although investigators had searched nearby cornfields, Mortvedt says that particular cornfield hadn’t been searched until Rivera allegedly led them to Tibbetts’ body Tuesday.

Medical examiner says Mollie Tibbetts died from stab wounds

State medical examiner Dennis Klein said in an interview that the finding means a sharp-edged or pointed object such as a knife was used to attack Tibbetts. He declined comment on the details of her injuries, and said that his office would hire consultants, including forensic anthropologists, to analyze her remains further and make additional findings.

How the Man Accused of Killing Mollie Tibbetts Built a Life in an Iowa Farm Town

He tended to dairy cows on a farm owned by a prominent family and returned home each evening to a modest brown trailer along a gravel road outside town.

But Mr. Bahena Rivera’s quiet demeanor sometimes stood out in jarring ways. A neighbor said he did not always follow the local custom of acknowledging him when Mr. Bahena Rivera drove by in a Chevy Malibu. And, more alarmingly, a woman said he made her uncomfortable with a romantic advance and repeated Facebook messages in the middle of the night.

“He would just stare. He wouldn’t really like talk,” said the woman, Brooke Bestell, 20, who had turned Mr. Bahena Rivera down when he asked her out on a date. “Something about him was off.”
