As murder trial begins, Jason Carter again denies killing his mother 4 years ago

"Before his mother’s body was removed from her tile kitchen floor, Jason Carter claimed to have known she was fatally shot with his father's rifle during an attempted burglary, prosecutors said.

But the burglary was staged, Marion County Attorney Ed Bull said Friday, and clues led investigators to only one conclusion: Carter killed his mother, Shirley.

As the executor of his parents' wills, Bull said the struggling farmer stood to receive their land, which amounted to $6 million, and liquid assets that included $800,000 in savings after their deaths.

"This case isn’t about money; it’s about pressure," Bull told jurors at opening arguments in Carter’s first-degree murder trial, asking the 11 women and three men to return a guilty verdict at the end. "The facts will support it, the law will compel it and justice for Shirley will demand it."

But one of the defendant's attorneys, Christine Branstad, said Carter had no reason to kill his mother, whom he loved dearly, in the home where he was raised. While his credit line was the highest it had ever been, Branstad said Carter owned $175,000 in grain and recently deposited a $3,000 check.

Investigators took Carter's statements out of context and created a timeline that does not make sense, his attorney argued. The investigation was not thoroughly completed as detectives with "tunnel vision" failed to follow up on significant pieces of evidence, she said.

"They were absolutely focused on Jason Carter," Branstad said, "and ignored all the other clues."..."

They will fill out questionnaires today & attorneys will have a chance to question people tomorrow. Attorneys anticipate the trial to last up to three weeks. Attorneys will have the chance to question jurors tomorrow (3/6). Opening statements are anticipated to begin Thursday (3/7) morning.

It's always amazing to me what we can learn from a cell phone. The state says Jason Carter had 2 phones. Sgt. Keller says the primary phone sent or received 13 text messages the morning of Shirley's death. His secondary cell (flip phone) sent or received 60 messages that morning.

"It takes a while to get there," Sheriff Sandholdt tells the jury.
The state points out this means Jason Carter is alone with his mom this entire time.

"COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — The trial of a Marion County man accused of murdering his mother is in its second week.

Monday morning, Marion County Attorney Ed Bull called several witnesses to the stand that identified suspect Jason Carter`s truck and discussed some of his texting conversations on the day of his mother`s 2015 murder.

That day, Jason was texting the woman he was having an affair with — Tara Kauzlarich.

She only explained the time of their conversation that morning and did not go into details of their affair.

“Was your conversation that morning, without telling us any of the details, such that you expected it was at a logical stopping point,” Bull asked.

Kauzlarich replied, “No.”

In addition to Jason`s texting conversations, his 911 call concerning his mother was played for the jury...."

Tara Kauzlarich was on the stand for about ten minutes. From the civil trial, we learned she was having an affair with Jason Carter at the time of the shooting.
