GUILTY IA - Sterling Koehn, 4 mos, starved to death, Alta Vista, 30 Aug 2017

This article is difficult to read due to the "pay" screen (they don't allow a number of free articles before getting the pay screen), but you can read the article around it if you are determined.

From this article, their arraignment is Nov. 14th at 9 am in Chickasaw County District Court.
The beginning of the article talks about why they took 2 months to file charges. In summary: They wanted to have an air tight case, and the forensics took a long time to get back. But the forensics supported stiffer charges, so it was worth the wait.

Here is a pdf of the article for anyone having problems viewing it.

i dnt have a link... :( I saw it upthread so it could be false.

I have not seen MSM info about him being adopted. Do you have anything? There was unsubstantiated info that ZK was from California, but it was actually just people sleuthing online finding a ZK of the right age who was from California. Wrong family, wrong info. ZK's brother did not say anything about adoption, either. Will be interesting to see what comes out.

I had to delete everything after the first slash, but then it says I have to register to see records. If anyone has registered - could you tell us "what" it says? Next court hearing maybe?

TIA!

Enter name, enter recaptcha, then search. Click on case, then filings. You can only see the court events, but at least we can track the hearings.

His facebook profile said he was from Merced, CA.

Okay, I get it now. I did some searching and ZK and brothers originally came from Merced, Ca. They went to Mennonite high schools in Iowa, so they must have moved to the area some time before high school. I don't believe they were adopted, but maybe we'll find out some day.

I think what happened to Sterling is even more horrific, knowing that other adults (allegedly) had information about Sterling's neglect and DID NOTHING. I was thinking it was a case where the parents isolated themselves and no one knew and it escalated out of control.
I hold the "father" even more accountable, because he (allegedly) was rational enough to complain and worry, yet he DID NOTHING.
Let's say he got back from a week of driving truck, asked CH how Sterling was, she said he'd been fed earlier, he went to check on him and found him dead. They then waited an hour to call for help. And he stayed with CH, got tattoos, posted a lot on facebook, and tried to make himself the victim (poor dad can't see his daughter). He KNEW Sterling was being neglected, and did nothing. In my book, that's about as bad as being in a drug-addicted landslide and neglecting your child to death.
I dont believe him. We all have SIGHT and SMELL.
Im sure LE checked where he was and when.
DA's office had one chance to get this right. Lined up their ducks and arrested them.

Thinking of little Sterling this a.m. It's a cold, rainy morning in IA and if I lived even a little closer to Alta Vista I would attend the candlelight vigil today. OT but related: I know little Briana's case is closed and those involved were convicted, but I wish we had a verified psychiatrist to help me understand how a human mind can become this depraved. I know the term sociopath but two in one family (Dad and cousin)? And the rest of the family were aware and did nothing? Were they that fearful of them? I think drugs were the problem with little Sterling and so many of these babies, but not all. These boyfriends of mom's and actual fathers, where does this ability to severely abuse come from? It seems to be happening more and more and the cases are beyond horrific. Why? moo ETA: When I click on a link to a msm article, I'll notice other stories reported on. So many times it's a story of another child beaten to death (soooo many times by a boyfriend, father) that we don't have a thread for here. I wonder truly, how many children are murdered each year by family/someone in the home. It's like the world has gone mad!

And on a lighter note this rainy am to get my mind in a better place for the day, I googled giant continental rabbits (can't find the post to reply to). Wow!!! Those are some BIG bunnies. lol

This whole issue is very near and dear to me and I cannot understand it at all. I wish someone could explain with an answer that would satisfy me but there is no excuse, at all for these abusers. And certainly no excuse for family that idly stand by and let it carryon. One thing I'm confident on is that drugs are usually at the root of these monsters. If drugs weren't available, I guarantee there would be a whole lot less of these crimes.

I am not saying that anyone takes drugs is a child abusing sicko, but in my knowledge of a situation like this, it was the main factor.

Hey niner, I was able to search without registering. Just not able to see everything. Both say last updated 11/1, so not sure if prelim happened on the 2nd as scheduled, but sure haven't seen any media coverage of it.

Arraignment scheduled for 11/14 at 9am.

Oh my God, that's smaller than my smallest cat when he was at the end of his life. Heartbreaking.

I hope that its a typo, but 7lbs or 5lbs really doesn't matter when we are talking about a 4 month old baby... He looked like he was a good weight when he was born. I would love to know his birth weight and length. If he weighed less at 4 months then he did at birth IMO there should be a lot more people charged :( I don't know if failure to report child abuse or suspected neglect is a thing, if not, it should be!

Here is a decent idea of what he likely was around at birth and what he should have been close to... it's so shocking. I don't know how they kept him alive and quiet. Drugs in his formula to keep him asleep alongside very infrequent feedings? I just can't comprehend this. I suggested earlier on that maybe it was extremely diluted formula and was enough to keep him going... I simply can't fathom rapid weight loss of about 50% of his body weight in a single week. This trial is going to be very hard to follow... JMO

When something is that size, a pound or two does make a huge difference. I realize you are saying it's terrible either way, but it's really a big deal. To put it in perspective, a healthy kitten weighs 1 lb per every month of life. So if he was 5 pounds, he weighed what a 5 month old kitten would weigh, and he was 4 month old. It just makes it extra horrendous for me when I can compare the size of a 4 month old child to that of a 5 month old kitten.

My son was a preemie and weighed 4lbs and 12oz.
Newborn preemie.

This is beyond disturbing. Why not just give him to someone. Leave him at the hospital. This is torture.

I don't think I saw this link posted yet. It says that Sterling was actually under 5lbs at death and that the COD is ruled homicide and the manner of death is "failure to provide critical care"

http://people.com/crime/iowa-baby-allegedly-left-swing-week/

When I read that article earlier, I thought it was a typo. If you take the grams that is in the affidavit/arrest warrant, and convert it to pounds, he weighed a tiny fraction under 7 pounds. Someone may have gotten their metric system/US system confused in reporting.

My daughter was born with 37 weeks and 4 days, and was 3150 gram. When I look back at pictures she looked so tiny and skinny. That is ridiculous for a 4 month old.
