There is so much to unpack from the latest filing by #BryanKohberger's defense team. First things first. AT indicates no DNA linking #Xana #Ethan #Kaylee or #Maddie to #BryanKohberger's car/apt/home was found. Taking her at her word, this is sometimes the outcome. Why, because it was weeks after the crimes were committed before the Search Warrants were served. This allowed for extensive cleaning. While expected that DNA would be found in his vehicle, we know extensive cleaning was done. We also know that due to the back to back car stops in Indiana that even more cleaning was done. Although no DNA was found, what was found? Bleach, disinfectants, other cleaning products? Extensive cleaning is evidence in and of itself, particularly when it is extensive. It shows covering up/clean up from a crime. How often do people bleach their vehicle interiors? Certainly, DNA would have been another Dagger for the prosecution's case, but depending on cleanup efforts, this helps the case as well. There was a Treasure Trove of evidence in his vehicle, I believe. It is gone, likely replaced by bleach and chemicals used to cover his alleged crimes.

Page 2 is a hot mess: Sheath "placed" - No AT. You can try to fanagle how the Sheath got under Maddie's dead body all you like, but saying it was placed there makes no sense. Neither the police nor anyone in that house bought a Ka-Bar knife Sheath, got #BryanKohberger to snap it, and then laid it under Maddie's dead body. It fell from his person, in the throws of his murderous rage, as he did not affix it to his belt. Juries are smart. They have common sense. They typically see through the smoke screens. And don't forget there is so much more evidence in terms of phone analysis, video footage, Ka-Bar knife and sheath purchase information, kit bag, gloved disposal of trash, ect. Innocent until proven guilty, but his DNA on that Sheath will be his demise, and the defense knows it.

Page 4 is interesting. As law enforcement investigates, they follow every conceivable lead until a logical conclusion can be reached regarding who is and isn't involved. Of course, they look through phone data, take DNA, fingerprints, and conduct interviews to this end. As suspects are eliminated, they move on to the next. In this case, when they investigated #BryanKohberger as a possible suspect, law enforcement connected him to the crime via DNA, vehicle match and phone data. At that point, they reached the logical conclusion that there was probable cause to believe he committed the crime and filed charges against him. At the point that others are cleared, they move on from them. Those cleared typically have alibis, have no connect in terms of cell data, DNA or prints and did not have vehicle matching the known make and model of the perpetrator's vehicle.

Make no mistake, cleaning blood using bleach and other products degregates DNA. Sadly, reality is not like t.v. Also recall, we don't know if there is no DNA. We only know what it says in the defense filing. Depending on what the killer did to protect his car interior (like covering it in plastic) and if he removed all of his blood soaked clothing, gloves, mask and shoes into plastic bags outside of his vehicle, and if he was smart enough to use booties on his feet after the murders and if he had plastic liners inside of his nitrile/nutrite gloves and removed his gloves post haste, inside out, placing them in plastic, and if he painstakingly cleaned every crevasse of his interior with bleach, yes it is possible that DNA was not found even if blood was found. (Luminol does not find DNA) Many think if #BryanKohberger was responsible that he was not very bright using his own car and bringing his phone. Perhaps, but I give him a lot of credit if he committed these crimes because but for dropping the Sheath, law enforcement still might be searching for the killer. Kohberger prosecutors consult Idaho families on death penalty

Kohberger prosecutors consult Idaho families on death penalty

  • Xana Kernodle's mother, Cara Northington, favors life in prison
  • Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen families seeking death penalty
  • Cameras will remain in court, gag order is less restrictive
Updated: JUN 23, 2023 / 11:27 PM CDT

(NewsNation) — There are 27 days left before a decision must be made about pursuing the death penalty for Idaho quadruple murder suspect Bryan Kohberger.

Families of the victims met with prosecutors to discuss their wishes on the matter, a source close to the investigation told NewsNation’s Ashleigh Banfield.

Kohberger, who is accused of killing four University of Idaho students, declined to enter a plea in court, electing to remain silent at his arraignment last month. That choice led the judge to enter not guilty pleas for the murder and burglary charges Kohberger is facing.

Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20, were stabbed to death in an apartment shared by the three women in November 2022.

If Kohberger is guilty, Kernodle’s mother, Cara Northington, has indicated she would like to see Kohberger in prison for life, rather than face the death penalty. Kernodle’s father, Jeff said he’s in favor of the death penalty. The families of Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen are in favor of the death penalty, as well. Ethan Chapin’s family have not yet made their stance on the matter public.

New documents in the case were released Friday.

#bryankohberger's defense team has hired #bickabarlow as their DNA forensic legal expert. The price tag will be upwards to $650/hour, but her credentials are impressive (see below). BK's Team is certainly loaded with the best experts money can buy. I am still amazed BK's team was afforded tax payer dollars to hire not 1 but 2 media experts just to weigh in on whether cameras should or shouldn't be allowed in the courtroom and whether the gag order would stay in place. It would seem their experts had little sway on Judge Judge.

In the new filing, the defense notes, “by December 17, 2022, lab analysts were aware of two additional males’ DNA within the house where the deceased were located.”

Lab analysts discovered DNA for another unknown man on a glove found outside the residence on November 20, 2022, the filing states.

“To this date, the Defense is unaware of what sort of testing, if any, was conducted on these samples other than the STR DNA profiles,” according to the filing.

The filing challenges the prosecution’s reliance on investigative genetic genealogy and opposes the government’s attempts to keep its methods a secret.

The next hearing in Kohberger’s criminal case is set for Tuesday.

In documents filed on Thursday, the attorneys said there was 'no connection' between the 28-year-old suspect and the students fatally stabbed in their off-campus Moscow home.

'There is no connection between Mr. Kohberger and the victims,' read the filing by attorney Jay Logsdon and reviewed by DailyMail.com.

Bryan Kohberger's attorney says there is "no connection" between him and the four Idaho students he is accused of fatally stabbing and that other men's DNA was found at the scene of the crime, according to a new court filing.

In the June 22 filing, Jay Weston Logsdon, the attorney for Kohberger, 28, critiques authorities' use of investigative genetic genealogy to apparently zero in on Kohberger as a suspect in the Nov. 13 slayings of Ethan Chapin, 20, of Conway, Washington; Madison Mogen, 21, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; Xana Kernodle, 20, of Avondale, Arizona; and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, of Rathdrum, Idaho.

The attorney characterizes investigative genetic genealogy as a "bizarrely complex DNA tree experiment" and writes that "there is no explanation for the total lack of DNA evidence from the victims in Mr. Kohberger’s apartment, office, home or vehicle.”

"Rather than seeing it as some sort of complex tree building that led to him, it appears far more like a lineup where the government was already aware of who they wanted to target," Logsdon said.

Logsdon also said that another man’s DNA was found on a glove outside the house less than a week after the murders, and that the DNA of two additional men were found in the house by Dec. 17. He said the defense team is unaware of what, if any, testing was conducted on those samples.

The attorney also alleged that police investigated "various possible suspects," many of whom provided DNA — including at least one who allegedly "had his DNA surreptitiously taken from a discarded cigarette" and others who "had their phones taken and downloaded," the filing said.

And he wrote that investigators have yet to explain how they came to identify the suspect's car as a white Hyundai Elantra. (Investigators have said they tracked Kohberger's car, a white Hyundai Elantra, and cellphone use in the area of the King Road house in Moscow where the students lived.)

“It remains unclear what the police first relied on in focusing their investigation on Mr. Kohberger," Logsdon said in the filing. “No matter what came first, the car or the genetic genealogy, the investigation has provided precious little."
