It began when Payette Police officers investigated a report of an individual walking around the train tracks. The Idaho Statesman reported police arrested Brent Sharrai. The suspect was on the scene around the area, tried to flee, and was caught.

After detaining the suspect, Payette Police were shocked by what they saw on the train. They reported an explosive device or bomb. The police called the Nampa Police department's bomb disposal.

A robot was used to safely remove and eliminate the bomb. The question now remains was this a terrorist attack in Idaho that was averted?

The FBI has sent an agent to the scene to investigate. In our country and state, people are innocent until proven guilty. However, with the recent terrorist attacks in New Orleans and Las Vegas, could Idaho be the next target for 'Lone Wolf' terrorists?

Idaho does have several military and civilian installations crucial to the nation's national security.

Lone Wolf terrorist attacks are the most difficult to defend, considering how law enforcement aggressively works to prevent those attacks. Conventional terrorism relies on networks involving humans and online activity, while a 'lone wolf' has no ties to anything that would alert police to their intentions.
Officers arriving at the scene just before 6 p.m. found fresh footprints leading to a train car that had a “suspected undetonated improvised explosive device,” also known as an IED, a Payette Police Department news release said.

Payette Police Chief Gary Marshall told the Idaho Statesman that the explosive was a “pipe bomb-style device” made out of polyvinyl chloride plastic, and it was found on a step connected to the outside of the train car.

“There was nothing discovered or disclosed by the suspect in this case that would tie him to any kind of terrorist organization,” Marshall said

IN COURT
  • As our neighborhood reporter Keith Burrell reported, the arraignment for the Payette man charged with possession of a destructive device is this afternoon.
  • At around 5 p.m. yesterday, Payette Police got a report of a suspicious object which turned out to be an undetonated improvised explosive device in a train car.
  • Fresh snow tracks led police to the suspect, 40-year-old Brent Sharrai, who told officers that he was trying to make fireworks for New Years but fell asleep. Detectives say they also found meth and paraphernalia at his residence.
  • That arraignment, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. today

The parents of the man accused of trying to set off a pipe bomb in a Payette train car were audibly frustrated. Sharrai has been in custody since his New Year's Day arrest after someone called Payette police to report a suspicious person attempting to light something on fire around some train cars.

"They didn't locate anybody immediately, but they were, because of the fresh snow, able to find footprints leading to a train car that was parked near that location," said Payette Police Chief Marshall. "On the train car, they observed a device that they described as an improvised explosive device that had not been detonated."

According to the affidavit, Sharrai told officers he made his own firework for New Year's celebration "to get a bigger boom." After falling asleep before midnight, he chose to light his firework the next night.

Nampa Police, whose bomb squad helped detonate the explosive, said the pipe was about eight inches long and three-quarters of an inch wide.
