Police departments as a whole seem to have a great deal of faith in the tests, don't they? But as far as I can tell, the science doesn't justify the result. I have no trouble believing that these two men were able to pass.
There is a channel on youtube with a cold case detective that really shines a light on a lot of questions like these. I thought his explanation of lie detector tests was fascinating. He said they are helpful, but no in the way people think.

He said he could care less what answers show up as lies, he just wants to see how the suspect acts before and after the test. Apparently a lot of times, people who lie on tests will then admit they lied and tell the truth. Or they will begin to act odd or more nervous.
