Patrick Mason is an LDS historian who teaches Mormon history and culture at Utah State University. He said he doesn't like to call them members of a "cult" but said their beliefs are undoubtedly extreme.

Mason said it sounds like Lori and Chad started with Mormon core beliefs and went beyond the teachings.

"All Latter Day Saints believe that Jesus is going to come back at some point, that there will be a second coming of Christ, but the idea that anyone knows that they date is, or that they have to take specific extreme actions in preparation, that would go way beyond mainstream teaching," said Mason.

Mason said the couple seems to be affiliated with an informal group that doesn't follow LDS doctrine.

"There have been movements throughout Mormon history-- this seems to be one of them--of people that feel that they really understand the truly teachings of the church, that they are living on a higher plane, and that they've been given a special calling from god to do something distinctive and unique. In this case, get ready for Jesus' return," he said.

Tami Joyce says she was friendly with Lori when she lived in Texas, and hasn’t seen her since 2007. When they first met, Lori was still using her maiden name, Cox, but soon after, she married Joseph Ryan, Tylee’s father, and took his name. Joyce told CrimeOnline that Vallow worked as a hairstylist, and appeared to be happy with Ryan and their son Colby, who is now in his twenties, in the marriage’s early years. But something changed, Joyce said, and the marriage “did not end well.”

Joyce met Vallow in Westlake, Texas, in the late 1990s/early 2000s. Vallow was very close with her young son Colby, and told Joyce that she had been very much in love with the boy’s father and wanted a life with him, but that the man, whose name Joyce could not remember and who she never met, “did not want that.”

Joyce said that Vallow adored her children and took great care of them. She also took very good care of herself, abstaining from drinking and smoking and living a healthy lifestyle, the woman said.

“She wouldn’t even have a glass of wine,” Joyce said, and typically went running twice a day. Vallow had not met Joseph Ryan when Joyce first met her, the woman said, but was soon introduced to him. The couple had a brief courtship and married within months, Joyce remembered. They had Tylee and Ryan adopted Colby; Joyce could not recall if the boy had any kind of relationship with his biological father.

In a video of the 2004 Mrs. Texas pageant found on YouTube, an emcee introducing Lori Ryan during the evening gown competition says that she had recently won $17,000 on “Wheel of Fortune”:

Mrs. Texas pageant owner Tracy Crist confirmed that Lori Ryan was a contestant in the 2004 pageant. Ryan was a semi-finalist, but was eliminated in the final round of competition.

A representative for Sony Pictures Entertainment, the production company for the game show, declined a request to provide images or footage of Vallow on “Wheel of Fortune,” citing the active investigation, but confirmed that Vallow appeared on the show and won $17,500.

Can you possibly provide a source for this? I am trying to corroborate but can find ziltch, zero, nada in that regards. Is Lori's "brother AC" meant to be Alex or Adam?

Basically, Vallow’s defense team motioned for the court to reconsider the denial of reducing her bail amount. Prosecutors say Vallow’s U.S. passport expired in Feb 2018. During hearing on 2/21, defense said she doesn’t have one. #fox10phoenix

Lori Vallow, mom of 2 missing kids, wants $5 million bail reduced

HONOLULU - A mother arrested in Hawaii over the disappearance of her two Idaho children wants a judge to reconsider her $5 million bail.

A court hearing for her request is scheduled Wednesday on Kauai, where Lori Vallow was arrested last week on an Idaho warrant. She has been charged with two felony counts of child abandonment.

Bail for the equivalent felonies in Hawaii usually range from $2,000 to $20,000, Vallow’s attorney, Craig De Costa said in a court motion seeking a reduction in bail. She isn’t a flight risk and had offered to turn herself in to authorities before her arrest on Thursday, the motion said.

Daniel Dempey, a lawyer who represented Vallow at Friday’s hearing, asked for bail to be lowered to $10,000.

The judge has discretion to set bail, Kauai prosecutor said in a court filing opposing Vallow’s request.

Vallow is a flight risk, prosecutors said. “Given the extensive media attention, she is clearly aware that the authorities have prioritized her case,” prosecutors said. “She also has the means to move across an ocean.”

Prosecutors noted that Vallow’s husband, Chad Daybell, had $152,000 in a First Hawaiian Bank account.

Could you provide a source with a mention of the third house and the sister? It also refers to the sisters "home" rather than "townhouse". Just curious about that wordage.

I also wondered if the woman seen near the end of the Ring doorbell camera footage of JJ just days before he disappeared might have been Lori's sister.

Alex was there on Nov. 26, then in Las Vegas 6 days later marrying Zulema Pastenes on Dec. 2. I'm curious about how/when they hooked up. Also considered the woman seen in the Ring doorbell camera footage could have been Zulema Pastenes but judging by the picture of Lori and her parents and siblings I would be more inclined to believe it might be her sister.

*Granted it wasn't Adam, her other brother with a A name.
