Search crews hunt for Boise hiker missing near Dry Creek

Search teams from the Ada County Sheriff's Office and Idaho Mountain Search and Rescue are hunting for a Boise man who has been missing near a popular trail since Saturday.

The missing 27-year-old told people he was going hiking by the Dry Creek trailhead off of Bogus Basin Road. He has not been heard from since Saturday afternoon.

Searchers found the man's car still parked at the Dry Creek trailhead, roughly 4.5 miles up Bogus Basin Road.

Dry Creek » Trail Map » Boise Trails

One of the best. Formerly an “off the map” trail that Ridge to Rivers adopted in 2016, Dry Creek trail has seen a regrettable uptick in traffic, but an offsetting uptick in trail maintenance. Dry Creek is special because of its variety–it begins on dry, sketchy sandstone cliffs, and ascends to wet, green forest. Don’t let the name fool you: this trail is the least dry trail in Boise. There are tons of water crossings, some spanned by newly added bridges, others by skinny logs that hikers, jogger and advanced bikers can use to stay dry. Because the top (easternmost) section of the trail is steep and loose, most people use Dry Creek as a downhill

Idaho Rescue Crews Search for Missing Boise Hiker
The man's name has not yet been released. The Ada County Sheriff's office says the man told people he was going hiking in the Boise foothills, and his car was found parked at the Dry Creek trailhead.

Temperatures in the region have dropped to below freezing at night and snow fell over the weekend. It's unclear if the man was prepared to spend an extended period of time in the elements.

Search is on for missing Idaho hiker | MyCentralOregon.com
Authorities say they were told that the man was very familiar with the Dry Creek Trail, a part of the Ridge to Rivers trail network which spans the Boise foothills and consists mainly of trails that hikers can complete in a single day. Over the weekend, the upper parts of the trail were buried under deep snow, according to the Ada County Sheriff’s Office.

Search efforts to find the missing man have continued into Tuesday, assisted by snowmobiles and a National Guard helicopter.

The sheriff’s office has taken over the investigation from Boise Police and is continuing to search for the missing man, along with Idaho Mountain Search and Rescue Unit.

Thanks for this. I hope they find him safe. It is sad.
So very sad. As you can imagine his family is devastated, but still holding onto hope.

Is it a possibility for her to call media and give his name? Should be her decision to get his name and his photo out there. That would help. Jmo

I’m sure she could, but at this point I don’t know what it would help. Only the search party will be out there, and his family member has just told me that they are searching again tomorrow. If they’re stopping the search tonight it seems they may not have much hope of finding him alive.

I’m sorry. I just thought if he’s somewhere lost maybe it would help if a picture and name were out there. Just in case. .

We are hoping and praying for the search team to find Mr. Crowden safe.

There is always hope.

Sometimes SAR doesn't want a lot of extra people out looking for him if they are using scent dogs during the initial search so not to muddy the trail. But it's been 4 days now, a picture might be helpful.

Thanks @GraceG, for the information about the scent dogs. Makes sense. I hadn't realized that before.

Yes makes sense about the dogs. I was thinking if someone had seen him though, on trail or even if he left the area, a photo would help the public.

I agree. As well, I think of surveillance cams around parking lots. I do not know if that is the case in this particular area.

The first thing I do is look at the photo. Everyone does and they make a mental note of the photo.

I’m not sure what I can post here, but from the family said he is presumed dead. The search has been called off because of even more snow coming. They promised to resume as the snow melts to find the body.

Idaho Mountain Search & Rescue Unit continues their search

After three days of searching there are still no signs, except for a car, of a 27-year-old hiker who told his friends he was going hiking near Dry Creek in the Boise foothills on Saturday.

Leading the search is the Idaho Mountain Search & Rescue Unit, an organization that is made up entirely of volunteers who give up their time and effort to try to help others.

The search has produced no results and as the snow fell on Wednesday it made tracking the missing hiker even more difficult, but this team continued to search.

"You have to be pretty versatile and willing to help out in anyway that you can," said Christy Kelly of the IMSRU. "The end result is what we are all after."
