ID ID - Stephanie Crane, 9, Challis, 11 Oct 1993

Stephanie Crane's file on Idaho's Cold Case site:

http://eastidahocoldcasesinc.com/eastcentral-idaho-missing-persons/stephanie-l-crane/

The page includes a lot of older newspaper articles. Sad that both her parents are deceased and this case remains unsolved.

ETA: In one of the articles, it says that Stephanie's sisters each have a "noise alert device" when they are out of the house. This is mentioned in one of the anniversary articles (one year after) so Stephanie probably didn't have one the night she was abducted.

Thinking of Stephanie.

Search for Stephanie Crane of Challis continued 22 years later

http://www.kboi2.com/news/local/Search-for-Stephanie-Crane-Challis-Idaho-22-years-later-331933061.html

Stephanie Crane of Challis went missing 22 years ago on Oct. 11, 1993, and for Custer County, the search continues.

Sandi Crane, Stephanie's mother, reported Stephanie was last seen at the Challis Lanes Bowling Alley between 5 and 6 p.m. that Monday.

Reports differ when recounting whether Stephanie was heading to her home that was only 500 yards away, or if she was heading to the high school to watch soccer practice.

Stephanie was 4'2" tall, between 65 and 85 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes at the time of her disappearance. She would have celebrated her 31st birthday on Sept. 28 this year.

Here's another anniversary article, Stephanie hasn't been forgotten by the community.

"Challis Girl Missing 22 Years Later"

“I believe everybody in the community has somehow kept it in their hearts and they still want to know what happened,” says Linda Dubiel, Custer County Sheriff’s Office.

Linda Dubiel works for the Custer County Sheriff’s Office in Challlis. She was the dispatcher the night Stephanie Crane came up missing 22 years ago. She points out the flyers of Stephanie still hung up in the Sheriff’s office, saying even after all this time, she remembers it like it was yesterday.

“The community came together and there wasn’t anybody that would not help,” says Dubiel.

KPVI found long time community members like Charlotte Miller who was dining at the ‘Y’ Inn Café in Challis, where flyers of Stephanie still hang in the lobby of the café. She says she can never forget what happened.

“I live right across from where she was abducted and I think of it every time I look over that way,” says Charlotte Miller, long time Challis resident.

Wednesday marks what should have been Stephanie Crane's 32nd birthday.

The Custer County Commissioners approved a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for Stephanie's disappearance.

The Sheriff's office has not given up. In the past year, it has reviewed reports and re-evaluated possible evidence. Investigators have re-interviewed local people and traveled out-of-state for other interviews.

Just watched the Disappeared episode. Crazy that after so many good leads they still never found her. I don't think she is alive, but i hope that poor grandmother someday gets closure by the discovery of her remains.

I just saw the new "Disappeared" episode....omg....heartbreaking that Stephanie has never been found! And my heart just broke for her grandmother! What an amazing woman. How awful her father died with no answers! And how awful for her sisters and the rest of the community!

It seems there were major resources applied for the early stages (searches, FBI, fax distrivution etc etc) and I have no doubt LE wants this case solved and has worked hard. The episode revealed some promising suspects. One question I have who else disappeared from the state around that time? The thought of her crying, possibly being held in that room in the basement is horrific and heartbreaking! Gosh...

To learn about Stephanie's case last night just made me feel really, really sad....it's so unfair!

Idaho girl disappeared 25 years ago today
Twenty-five years ago, October 11, 1993, Sandi Crane walked into the Custer County Sheriff’s office to report that she could not find her nine-year-old daughter, Stephanie. Stephanie had just celebrated her ninth birthday on September 28, 1993. This year, she would be celebrating her 34th birthday.

Dubiel is now the jail administrator. At 27 years, she has the longest tenure of anyone currently working at the Sheriff’s Office.

She emails a news release every year near the anniversary of Stephanie’s disappearance to media far and wide.

“I don’t want people to ever forget,” Dubiel said. “This might be the year that someone remembers something. You never know. I don’t want to give up hope.”

Dubiel still hopes Stephanie might be found alive. It’s happened in the case of three Ohio girls, she pointed out, who were kidnapped and held in captivity for a decade. Or, human remains might be found and identified as Stephanie’s, at least bringing family members some closure.

“Personally, I don’t think any missing person case should ever be closed,” Dubiel said, especially when a child is abducted.
Case may be cold, but search for Stephanie Crane continues
