ID - Zeke Best, 10-months, abducted by homicide suspect bio father Jeremy Best 41, Victor, 30 Nov 2023 *father arrested*

It'll surprise the heck out of me if Jeremy Best doesn't want to act as his own attorney.

My heart is broken to read this news :( RIH Zeke, with your mama.
Based on what is currently known, his marked change in appearance, and comments from locals under articles I am going to guess drug induced psychosis.
[Self-] Drug-induced psychosis. Absolutely. (IMO)

MOO, there was no murder charge for little Zeke because it was not immediately apparent what caused his death. I think if they can determine that it was an act of murder more charges may follow. If the baby died through neglect (exposure to elements, lack of water, something like that we may see lesser charges as relates to him. But I do think we will see some sort of additional charges.

RSBM - Yes, as I understand it, they are waiting the autopsy report before filing charges in relation to Zeke.

At least it appears that there may well be a known possible perpetrator. JMO.
What a horror. Takes my breath away -- truly, it's just difficult to breathe.

Can I suggest with humililty that his hygiene and hair growth was strongly suggestive of a mental health crisis for weeks prior? I feel tremendously sad for Kali and Z.
Another suggestion of a MH crisis might be the queue of vehicles in his auto repair business. LE or some third party should analyze this, broken down (no pun intended) into vehicles that are:
  1. waiting for diagnosis of issue(s), if not known or obvious;
  2. diagnosed and waiting for parts;
  3. in the midst of repair;
  4. repaired and awaiting pickup by customer.*
Accompanying these vehicles in each category should be paperwork (virtual and/or physical) to back up the work, and a running total of costs for time and materials. Absence or disorganization of such documentation, along with excessive size of repair queue, could be a strong indication not just of mental breakdown, but when it started to occur.
IDK if he has employees or if it's a one-man outfit, but if it's the latter, those vehicles aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
*subject to presentation of a final bill, which is probably done at the last minute in presence of customer.

MOO YMMV

Why would LE do this? Just curious - what would be the point? I don't think a queue of unfixed cars is going to give a clear indication of when it started - unless data for several years is analyzed. That would take a court order.

I'm sure that if there are cars at his fairly small business, yes, those people will be upset and not be able to easily get their cars. But they'll need to hire lawyers. LE doesn't go investigate issues between businesses and clients (unless it's fraud - which doesn't seem to be the case here).

For all we know, he's always been scattered when it comes to getting cars done on time - that would have to be analyzed. Even so, people can be poor at business and not mentally ill. It just seems that in 2009-2012 (when he was redoing his own van) it was clear that he was getting van conversion work and was able to do his own van very nicely.

Then, he got married and Kali posted on FB about how happy they were after the birth of their child. Heck, I view the fact that she got pregnant again as an indication she thought he was sane. Her family may know a different story - but it's also possible that Kali never dealt with his illness before and that it's new.

I'm guessing this guy has no assets to speak of - so the goal of the civil attorneys would be just to get the cars back to their owners.

I was surprised to learn that the entire population of Teton County is only about 12,000. So...one does wonder how much business he had.

IMO.

Going off my experience of living in a place with a huge meth problem, this definitely sounds like JB was on meth. He probably got some sleep in the hospital and that is why he was able to act normal enough to be released. These thoughts are my opinion only.

Edited for grammar
My bold and color added above.

Hmmmm, that could indeed be it -- something happened to him, and now 2 good people are gone, family and friends are devastated, and one is in Big Trouble. SMH.

Good point -- there were a lot of cars around the shop. Possibly a trigger for depression added to whatever else was going on in his mind. (Please know that my comment here in no way should lessen what the man has probably done to his family.)

Yes, I realize that it would probably be messy legally, and might be more trouble than anything of medical or forensic interest found.

Best seemed agitated during the court hearing and came in shirtless.

Jim Archibald and John Malek were assigned as Best's defense attorneys and asked the Judge for a mental check on Best.

"Your Honor, me and Mr. Malik have met with Mr. Best. We believe that it's necessary under Idaho Code 18 to 11 that this court order a competency review. So we would ask that an order from this court be sent to the Department of Health and Welfare to conduct the mental competency review," Archibald said.

A Teton County Sheriff's affidavit describes what may have happened to Kali Best. The report said police were sent to the couple's home in Victor at 4600 Skyline Loop for a 911 hang-up call. Dispatch said, "There were loud sounds of yelling in the background of the phone call and then silence."

Deputies said when the recorded 911 call was played back, "a female can be heard repeating 'Jeremy' and 'Jeremy no'" in the background.

The document said, "A male voice repeats 'yes' in response, and then yells 'get the 🤬🤬🤬🤬 back, you’re gonna get shot' followed by 'I love you, I love you, I love you.'"

Deputies found Kali's body on the ground outside of Jeremy's Auto Repair shop door. It appeared she had been shot 3 times. The deputy tried CPR, but was unsuccessful.

The report also said Kali was 28 weeks pregnant.

You raised a good point, IMO. So I went to the Idaho SOS website and pulled up his business record. Interesting find - JB faithfully filed his Annual Reports from 2006 to 2021. No report was filed for 2022 and the SOS administratively revoked his good standing on 2/8/23. On 3/6/23 an application for reinstatment was filed and his good standing was restored. Someone filed his 2023 Annual report on 10/5/23.

My thoughts are with that dispatcher, deputy and all the first responders. That is horrific.

What changed? KB got pregnant in 2022. Baby Zeke was born January of 2023. It’s December 2023 and KB was 28 weeks pregnant with their 2nd child. I think that’s what triggered his “episode”. JMO

@aafromaa Sorry to hear that, how is she doing now if you don't mind me asking? I'm Impressed with the treatment she received.
I am so upset about JB having a breakdown and yet released and then his wife/son/unborn child are now deceased. I want to blame someone but the laws give everyone an out. IMO.
My sister is doing okay now - she’s bi-polar and does pretty well when she stays on her meds. My niece is doing very well - she has been clean now for over 2 years - she has a little baby now and has become a wonderful mother. It was awful to see each of them be forced into getting help but in both cases the family had done all that we could without getting anywhere and it was a blessing to have them get the help they needed.

He was allowed into the courtroom without a shirt on?

The picture from a page back of him gesturing clearly has a zoom logo. His appearance wasn't in person, it was from his cell or another room for that purpose at the jail.

I would agree with drug induced psychosis.
This case very much reminds me of Jose Morales, when he murdered his partner and kidnapped their baby he was on PCP.

I am so incredibly heartbroken for her family :(
