They say the victim was play fighting with them at first.

But I call bull crap since he was abducted and probably forced to tell mom that he was spending the night.

Btw. I remember a dateline story where a gang robbed and kidnapped an old lady, and drove around with her in the trunk of her own car.

Plus these idiots stopped by different locations in the hood to show off the victim in the trunk to their friends.

But no one called the cops. They all just laughed at the old lady.

Before the car was ditched and she died in the trunk of her own car.

So imo. I have no sympathy for people that cheer on this behavior. Because they are just as guilty. Jmo

Good morning Chirpcheep,

I am very familiar with that case. The D.A.'s office, the prosecutor - all agreed that the facts were "blown out of proportion".

Honestly the officials in that place could give lessons on minimizing criminal acts to the point that they never occurred.

It is sickening to read how they minimized everything about this case. It made me feel that it was the 1940's.

The town relied on the reputation of the status of the football team at that school. Money and power.

I felt quite sick after reading the reactions and propaganda from the officials.

In my opinion, hate crime is hate crime is hate crime.

Good morning Dexter,

Here is an article about a woman that young gang members shoved in a trunk (of her own car), drove around and showed her
off to their friends who laughed.

In this case the woman lived but had been beaten so severely that her sister didn't recognize her.

There was some talk of these young gang members (some as young as ten) being responsible for the deaths of the three
little boys in 1993 as all of these individuals who stole the woman's car and beat her within an inch of her life all lived
in West Memphis near where the boys were killed in the woods.

A hate crime is a hate crime.

If we don't look at other similar (in this case - hate crimes) we aren't learning much.

Thanks to you and also Dexter for bringing up comparative cases (as pertaining to hate crimes)

The grandmother seems genuine as she apparently raised them.

So many times parents and caregivers express shock when the kids do something horrendous. It happens, unfortunately.

I believe she only raised one of the sisters---the younger one I think.

2nd Update: This is just so phenomenal. They are setting up a court monitored trust, so the victim can get the mental health treatment, his working class family could not otherwise afford to give him. It will also open up resources available to him that his family would not have otherwise known about or could afford.

I'm so happy to see the money will be used 100% for his care. God Speed Austin! May you future days be healthy and bright!

I just came across this recent article from the Chicago Sun Times, and figured I'd share a few excerpts from the family's friend, attorney and official spokesman:

A GoFundMe campaign titled “Let’s show the Chicago Victim love” had raised $153,840 as of Tuesday afternoon, just five days after the page was started by a good Samaritan with no connection to the family. The money is sorely needed as the man, an 18-year-old who suffers from schizophrenia, will need to recover from a days-long ordeal that began when an acquaintance kidnapped him on New Year’s Eve, said Neal Strom, an attorney who is helping the man’s family deal with press inquiries.

“My clients are overwhelmed with the warm, kind generosity of perfect strangers,” Strom said Tuesday. “It just came out of the clear blue sky . . . it shows that there are good people out there after all [the victim] has been through.”

Strom said the abuse was traumatic and terrifying for the victim, whom he described as “shy and introverted.” The six-figure pot of donations will be used to get treatment for him, not just for the stress of the incident but mental health care his working-class family has struggled to provide throughout his life, said Strom, who said he is not charging the family for his help.

“It will be 100 percent devoted to providing for him, with things he’s never really had, enough resources to counsel and properly diagnose and treat his mental state,” Strom said, adding the money likely will be placed in a court-monitored trust. “The family is not well-off at all. They have very, very modest means. Anything in this account will be judiciously used to get this young man the help that he needs.”

Strom said he has fielded calls and offers from organizations and individuals across the U.S., but has spoken only to family members, and he isn’t sure how aware the victim is of the many people expressing sympathy. Cards and letters have also flooded a P.O. Box in Cary, Illinois, set up by a relative.

“It’s been overwhelming,” Strom said. “I hope that this will connect [the family] with organizations and opportunities that would never have been available to them, had it not been for this horrible, disgusting, beyond-belief thing that happened.”

New Update on the Go Fund Me Page, talks about the guy who started the fund for the Victim. Almost $160k raised for the victim.

I've gotten a lot of questions and seen a lot of comments from people asking why I created this fundraiser when I didn't know Austin or his family. There is no quick or easy answer to this question, and at the time I didn't want to shift any focus away from Austin and the purpose of the campaign, but now that things have finally begun to settle down, I spoke with Colby Itkowitz of the Washington Post yesterday, who wrote this excellent piece that answers a lot of these questions far better than I ever could.

In less than two weeks, the amount of donations that has poured into this campaign has been astounding. More than $177,000 has been raised from over 5,700 people across all 50 states and over 40 countries!

But the amount of well wishes Austin and his family has received through the P.O. Box has been incredible as well! According to the family (who allowed me to share with all of you), they “have been receiving items since Monday, and have gotten everything from prayers, to homemade cards from students/children, to jokes to make Austin smile, and also some brave people who shared their touching stories of dealing with mental illnesses and abuse. It is really touching to see all the goodness.”

In addition, “Austin has also received many Chicago Bulls items like clothes, blankets, hats, a personalized pillow case, which he really loves. One of the really neat gifts Austin received was from a man who sent a letter about an incident that he went through and how music helped him get through it. With the letter came two electronic hand instruments. One of them was a drum which Austin has really taken a liking to.

Between the Go Fund Me page and the well wishes through the mail, it has no doubt shown Austin that the majority of this world is filled with love and kindness.”

It is inspiring that the young man is receiving handmade gifts, and let's and stories from other well wishers. That is the type of positive therapy he really needs now. Almost better than the cash!
