So where did the chest punctures come into play?

Why do you think the police wanted to discredit Bedwell’s confession?

The chest punctures were never fully investigated.
The reason the police discredited Bedwell's confession was that the coroner, a political hack, not a medical man, announced to the public within a day after they were discovered, that the girls died the same night they disappeared. He did this to protect their reputations and avoid the press relishing in the possibility that two young Catholic girls could have been held captive and sexually abused for days on end.

the Coroner, McCarron was a devout Catholic as well.

Bedwell confessed, the day after the coroner made that announcement. He was likely turned in by Minnie Duros, for whom he worked as a dishwasher. He was in her restaurant with the Grimes girls and she warned him to take them back home.

Now, the coroner had a problem, does he take back his statement about the same night death or discredit Bedwell's confession. He chose the latter, and in doing so, he chose closure over justice.

It's all in this book.

Mods, remove if you deem this inappropriate.

This is a blown-up image of the marks on Patricia's chest, claimed to have likely been made by an icepick or similar object. Although some have speculated that the injuries were made with a garden-fork-type implement, judging by the angles, it's clear that these wounds were done one at a time.

The autopsy report indicated that the wounds were between 3/4" to 1" deep and done post-mortem. (after death)

I have drawn red lines that indicate the angle of entry.
I wonder if the puncture marks shown in the autopsy photo might have been small caliber bullet holes?

If the autopsy was as shoddy or inept as some indicate, were x-rays even taken? ... If so, any bullets remaining in the body would have been seen.
