Chicago Police said 23-year-old Charles Thomas was last seen Thursday leaving his home in the 3800 block of North Springfield Avenue.

According to Thomas’ friend and roommate Elijah Wolter, Thomas actually lives in the 2800 block of North Springfield Avenue in Logan Square. And, according to a separate flyer circulating on social media, Thomas, who goes by Charles or Soji, was last seen near Unanimous Boxing Gym, 2764 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Logan Square.

Thomas was shot in the shoulder by a University of Chicago police officer last year. He was later charged with eight felonies after the shooting: three counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and five counts of property damage.

“His mental illness puts him at enormous risk (especially because he left his medications in his apartment) so it’s crucial that he is found ASAP,” EC (A.B. ’17), a friend and former roommate of Thomas, wrote in a widely circulated Facebook post about Thomas’s disappearance.

Thomas was a student at the University until 2018, when he was shot by a University of Chicago Police Department officer while wielding a metal pole. Following the incident, Thomas’s mother said that she believed her son was having a mental health episode at the time.

Former Chicago college student who was shot by campus police last year has gone missing, family says
[...]

Kathy Thomas said she learned something was amiss when her son’s lawyer called her Saturday and said he’d been trying unsuccessfully to reach Charles. She said he didn’t answer his phone, which appeared to be off, and after his roommate returned home from a trip and found that her son was not at home, she flew to Chicago from her home in California and hired a private investigator.

The family contacted police Sunday, she said.

A police alert said Thomas was last seen Thursday leaving his home in the Irving Park area. Through phone records and tips, his mother said, it now appears he went to a gym on Milwaukee Avenue in Logan Square on Thursday and later picked up new eyeglasses from a nearby optical shop.

[...]

The charges remain pending, his mother said, and he’s been anxious to see the case resolved.

The shooting prompted days of protest last year as U. of C. students took to the streets demanding an end to the university’s private police force. U. of C. is among a rising number of private and public universities that employ sworn police officers in armed capacity to patrol campus.
