Schranz was reported missing by her mother in October.

"She tried so hard to get her life cleaned up," said mom Rebecca Stowers. "The drugs were stronger than she was."

Stowers' decades-long nightmare had its worst possible ending last Friday when the body of her drug-addicted daughter was found frozen, stabbed and dismembered in a snow-covered field on the city's Southwest Side.

"Nobody should die like that," Stowers said. "I don't care what her lifestyle was."

In the weeks after Rebecca Stowers' drug-addicted daughter disappeared, she could tell nobody cared much.

Certainly not as much as they cared about Stacy Peterson, whose disappearance from her Bolingbrook home has drawn national media attention.

Then she bumped into State Police Sgt. Steve Loan at a Summit White Hen, and everything changed.

Stowers' story still ends on a bitter note, despite all of her searching. Her daughter, Carolyn Schranz, was identified as the woman whose frozen body was found last month, stabbed to death, on the South Side.
