A friend of several years said Monday that Coats enjoyed riding on that friend’s Harley-Davidson motorcycle, with the two women singing “praise and worship songs” as they traveled down roads.

“She was an excellent rider; we would ride for hours,” the friend said. “She was a Christian, she believed in God. She was dearly loved.” The woman said when she heard Coats was missing, she feared for her safety because she knew her friend would not just leave the area.

A judge has refused to reduce the $1 million bond for one of two men accused of killing a southwestern Illinois woman whose dismembered body was found along a Greene County river.

Circuit Judge James Hackett refused a defense motion to reduce the bond of Brandon L. Chittum from $1 million to $500,000 after a prosecutor pointed out the suspect is accused of a brutal homicide and he may be a member of the Outlaws biker gang.

Chittum, 31, of Collinsville is one of two men accused of two counts of first-degree murder, one count of dismembering a human body and concealment of a homicidal death.

Chase also cried during the proceedings and rocked back and forth as he stood in front of the judge. His attorney, Assistant Public Defender Neil Hawkins, said Chase had been examined by a psychologist and found fit to stand trial.

He said the plea agreement includes a recommendation for psychiatric treatment during his prison term.

Chase said something inaudible to Kovach as she was walking past him on her way from the witness stand.

“You can’t, Patrick,” she said to him.

Family members, police and Uhe spent several minutes after the hearing embracing and shedding tears. The courtroom was silent.

The second suspect had a tentative trial date for this past September but it probably got pushed back.

http://thetelegraph.com/news/70006/murder-suspect-asks-for-third-attorney

Brandon L. Chittum, 32, is one of two men charged with the murder of Coats, 30, of Alton, who went missing for 27 days in late 2013 before her remains were found in trash bags along the Illinois River near East Hardin.

The victim’s boyfriend, Patrick Chase, who was 28 at the time, has pleaded guilty and is serving a 45-year sentence. He is believed to have slit the victim’s throat and strangled her.

Chittum, a friend of Chase, was charged because he took part. He is charged with two counts of murder, one count of dismembering a human body and one count of concealment of a homicidal death. He is being held in the Madison County Jail without bond.

Murder defendant denied release

http://thetelegraph.com/news/93213/murder-defendant-denied-release

Elizabeth Kovach was helped out of the courtroom after hearing testimony that murder defendant Brandon Chittum stood by, offering “coaching,” as Patrick Chase choked her, then slit her throat.

Kovach returned after she gathered herself and heard an argument from Chittum’s attorney, Evelyn Lewis, that her client should be released from the Madison County Jail, where he has been held for about three years, awaiting trial. If he is not released pending appeal, he could have his bond reduced to $100,000, she suggested, with possibly some restrictions, such as home detention.

Lewis argued that the state has appealed a ruling from Associate Neil Schroeder that Chittum’s statement implicating himself should be kept out of evidence. Since it was the state’s decision to appeal Schroeder’s decision, it would not be fair for authorities to keep him in jail in lieu of $1 million bail, Lewis argued.

Schroeder denied Chittum’s motion for release pending appeal. “It does not appear to the court that the state’s successful appeal order is essential to sustain the further prosecution of the defendant. Indeed, from the testimony presented, the court finds that the proof is evident that the defendant committed the offenses with which he is charged,” the judge’s order states.

HA! Good try Chittum.I prefer to spell his name with an S, but he's not worth me getting a T/O.
No way in hell will this human trail of cat sick ever get a reduced bond along with free time to spend at home before his trial. No way, and thank you Illinois for denying this coward anything.

It's a shame Illinois doesn't have the DP anymore, it's cases like this that are so deserving of death.

I feel so bad for Courtney's mum, Elizabeth Kovach.
