Rep. Rita Mayfield, D-Waukegan, also questioned Smith about the death of Damari Perry, who lived in Mayfield’s district. Perry, 6, was found dead in an alley in Gary, Indiana. Damari was taken into the state’s care in 2015, but was returned to his mother’s care, along with his siblings, two years later. Two subsequent abuse allegations were received by DCFS, including an allegation that the mother wrote a note threatening to harm Damari.

On Dec. 29, prosecutors said Damari was punished with a shower in cold water. He vomited, went unresponsive and later died. Jannie Perry, the boy’s mother, and two siblings face charges in connection with his death.

Since Damari’s death, two other children have died after DCFS received allegations that they were abused.

Indicted & recharged (2/2/22) & arraigned (2/18/22) with 8 counts of 1st degree murder, aggravated battery of a child, dismembering a human body, conspiracy, aggravated domestic battery, concealment of a homicidal death, endangering the life or health of a child, abuse of corpse, obstructing justice & failure to report the death or disappearance of a child under 13 yrs. old. Plead not guilty. $5M bond.

2/18/22 Update: Perry appeared on Thursday for her rescheduled arraignment hearing where a judge read her the charges she is facing. Perry entered a not guilty plea to all counts against her. Prosecutors have indicated they would seek natural life sentences for the two defendants if they are convicted. Perry is scheduled to appear in court again on 3/3/22 for a status hearing.
3/3/22 Update: Affidavit filed. Disclosure to accused filed. Notice deferred prosecution programs filed & motion for discovery filed. Next status hearing on 3/17/22.

2/8/22 Update: Perry, seeking to defend himself in court against murder charges was given time by a Lake County judge Tuesday morning to think about that decision. At a hearing Tuesday, Judge George Strickland asked Jeremiah Perry several questions about how the legal system works to determine whether he should be allowed to defend himself in court. After being asked whether he understood how to make a motion to suppress evidence, Perry asked Strickland if he had to answer that question right now. In the end, Perry accepted Strickland's offer to think about his decision. He is scheduled back in court on 3/4/22.

I missed this case when it happened. What could he have done ON HIS BIRTHDAY (or ever) to deserve such cruel and inhumane treatment??? How sad it is that his siblings are twisted enough to help. I wonder if someone told so that they found his body, or did they figure it out from cell phone pings? He is now wrapped in the arms of love. Rest peacefully Damari. Your siblings are rescued from believing this is normal life.

Why did she take him back when she obviously didn't want him? He deserved to live.
