Dawn Niles was born deaf and mute in 1965. She lived with her family at 1012 Newberry Ave. in La Grange Park, a suburb of Chicago, Illinois.

Dawn attended Hinsdale High School in nearby Darian, IL where she was last seen alive at 3 p.m. on 17 March 1981 entering the car of fellow student and former boyfriend Gary Albert, age 18. She had just learned that she was three months pregnant.

Dawn did not return home that day and several days later her body was found near a path in a remote area. An autopsy showed that she had been stabbed 34 times.

In 2008, after 27 years, Gary Albert was arrested and charged with Dawn's murder. In a trial that year, he was found not guilty.
