Born Danica Diana Smeljanic in Yugoslavia in 1892/3 and married to Luka (Louis) Lonkar. The odd thing about this case is the withdrawal of $1000. That is $12000 in todays value. What was the purpose/reason?
She was born Danica Smiljanic on April 12 1892 in Radatovici Croatia. She arrived in the USA on April 15 1912 the day the titanic went down. We do not believe she withdrew 1k. The laws then were woman were not allowed to. She sold goods ( wine breads and bakery items ) to neighbors and she was a seamstress. She had her own money.
We think her husband ( my great grandpa ) made that story up and tossed her coat at the lake ( down the street ) as a red herring. She told her son ( my grandpa ) that morning that she planned on visiting family in Ohio. The following month she was also due to take a train to Chicago to visit her second born grandchild. Her husband was not happy about that. My grandpa never spoke to his father after that day.
I had hopes she actually took out that money and ran but I’m not finding evidence of that in my years of searching. She was an amazing mother to her 4 living children and we do not believe she would have left and never contacted the kids again. I’ve contacted the church and cousins near her village and there is no sign of her going back to Croatia.
