Police say sibling dispute turned deadly: 'She kept stabbing."

The bleak scene came as prosecutors tried to explain how a sibling argument exploded into lethal violence Tuesday morning, when the 14-year-old allegedly stabbed her sister dozens of times in a fury over the child's supposed ingratitude.

Multiple sources and public records, including her parents' divorce file, identify the victim as Dora Betancourt

Officials said the girls' mother was the only adult living in the home. She was at work Tuesday morning, they said, when her daughters' quarrel took a horrifying turn.

Officials released the victim's name today. I found out several hours ago & I still feel lightheaded & in shock. I know both of these girls, the 11yo victim & her 14yo sister, accused of murder.
I'm literally shell shocked. Jaw on the floor. Disbelief. OMG.

Karen Hawkins, a spokeswoman for the Department of Children and Family Services, said the agency did not have any contact with the family before Tuesday.

However, Hawkins said, an investigation was opened Wednesday against the mother for neglect and the older sister for abuse.

The department has 60 days to complete their investigation, Hawkins said.

This is so shocking. The 14 year old cooking dinner 6 times in one week also struck me as excessive, even for helping out a single parent. Surely, there was someone in the their church community, etc. who would have been willing to help out at least once or twice a week if Mom routinely works late.
Long working hours could also explain why the Mom may have not seen any warning signs if emotional issues were starting to appear. This is very sad indeed for this school/church community.

A group calling itself Mundelein Moms says it has raised more than $4,000 from more than 800 people to cover the funeral expenses of an 11-year-old girl allegedly stabbed to death by her 14-year-old sister.

I saw that. I'm wondering if the local funeral home will donate its services, as this is a tragic child death. However, I can't imagine the mother will be able to go back to work anytime soon (God knows, I would be a wreck), so hopefully, the monetary fund will allow her to take time off for a while. :(

Fourteen year olds killing 11 year old siblings.
40 stab wounds. That's overkill, imo. This is something that had been brewing for a while, especially if reports are true that she set her alarm to wake up early to carry this out.

I can't even begin to imagine the rage this young girl must have felt, to do this. And 40 times. You'd think after the first 5 or so, her arm would get tired, or, after the first stab wound, she would recoil and say to herself, "what am I doing??"

Because this wasn't an accident, I'm having a hard time finding any sympathy for her.

Choices. It's all about choices.

This would surely be a case of rage killing. jmo

I agree with you, this young girl was filled with rage, and probably, at that point, there was no amount of rational thought entering into the scenario.
The choices I was referring to were made a long, long time ago, I think, before the rage took over. And even deciding to give in to the rage is a choice.

Wow. Just, wow.

Trying to understand this kind of rage, and it's hard to believe there were no signs from the 14yo?

One of the news outlets referenced her facebook page, anyone come across it?

No. They haven't released her name that I am aware of, because she is a minor.

One of the articles up thread said they are starting an investigation against the mother for neglect, and the 14 yo for abuse. It seems to me, it is too late for that. :sigh:

Sad.

I hope we learn more details, I always need a "why" in cases like this. Still waiting for that answer regarding Leila Fowler.
