GUILTY IL - Dora Betancourt, 11, stabbed to death, Mundelein, 21 Jan 2014

  • #41
Trying to understand this kind of rage, and it's hard to believe there were no signs from the 14yo?

One of the news outlets referenced her facebook page, anyone come across it?

Yes, I saw her FB. There's little there, besides a few pics of the offender with friends & of the two sisters together. There weren't any posts, at least not public ones. I've also seen their mother's FB & everything is set to private, save for one pic of her late 11yo daughter. Out of respect for the family, I'm not going to share links or names.

Sad.

I hope we learn more details, I always need a "why" in cases like this. Still waiting for that answer regarding Leila Fowler.

I'm mind boggled & wondering why, too. I also wonder about the Leila Fowler case, which is the first thing I thought of when I heard about Dora's murder.

Honestly, both girls seemed like normal kids, typical siblings. I have read & heard comments noting the same from classmates, neighbors, & family friends. Obviously, none of us lived in the house to see any red flags, & speaking of society in general, who really knows what goes on behind anybody's closed door?

I'm so shocked, so, so shocked. This story has been picked up all over the world - CNN, Huffington Post, & everywhere across the Internet. It's terrifying because, IMO, this girl was no 'clearly waving red flag' (such as Adam Lanza, for instance).

It's mind boggling. :(

Thank you! I don't think it would be appropriate either. If it comes out of the media, that's one thing. I wouldn't if I knew them either.

You're welcome. Honestly, there looks to be nothing there to sleuth, anyway.

Teen and preteen girls can be very dramatic and over the top with their emotions. That is why parents need to monitor teens as tragic events can result from these emotions.

It is a scientific fact that human brains are not totally developed until sometime in the 20's so I believe this girl should not be charged as an adult ......as heinous a crime as it was. Prayers go out for everyone involved in this sad story.

Dora's obituary:

http://www.kristanfuneralhome.com/m...288&fh_id=11076&forcelayout=mobile#obituaries

Ummm...they listed her date of death as Monday, the 20th. It was really Tuesday, the 21st. Der.

P.S. I called the funeral home to tell them about the mistake.

P.P.S. They just fixed her date of death. It is now correctly listed.

P.P.P.S. Actually, it's now listed as Monday, the 21st. Smack head. I called the funeral home again & let them know it's Tuesday, the 21st.

I did a little research & found out that the St. John school day goes from 8:30am to 3:30pm. I also found out that there was school on Tuesday, the 21st. I have no idea why the two girls were not on their way to school already on that day. ?

Who said anything about sleuthing a minor, hope you weren't referring to me.

No, not at all, Knox. I just meant that it's just a few pics, so nothing that would fill in all the questions bubbling around in our sleuthing minds. It was a general statement and in no way meant to cause offense.

I was thinking the same as you LB. As much as I'm interested in finding out why the 14 yr old did this, I don't think we'll find it online. This appears to me to be a medical/mental issue. JMO.

She washed off the blood and called their mother, making up a story about waking to her sister's screams and seeing a man straddling the younger girl and stabbing her, Kasten said. Her mother told her to call police, and the girl was waiting at the door when officers arrived around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Kasten said.

The above bolded caught my eye. The mother told her 14 year old daughter to call the police???

If my teen daughter called me at work & told me a horrific story (albeit untrue) about someone breaking into the house & stabbing my other daughter, I wouldn't ask my daughter to call the police. As the parent & adult of the household, I'd be the one calling the police.

I'm not surprised that CPS has opened an investigation into possible neglect.

I have no doubt the mother is traumatized at the loss of her youngest daughter's life at the hands of her oldest daughter. So incredibly tragic. Nevertheless, when she got the phone call from her daughter & was told that her youngest daughter had been stabbed, the mother should have been the one to call 911.

IMO, assigning that task to her oldest daughter may be indicative of other adult responsibilities she placed on her 14 year old, especially with the 14 year old's claims that she cooked dinner every night. There is no justification for the 14 year old to brutally stab her younger sister to death. Nevertheless, I think it's important for the family dynamics to be investigated. A 14 year old should not be expected to fulfill the roles of a parent in a household.

Interesting thoughts, Sorrell. (As an aside, I actually know a little girl named Sorrell. I'd never heard the name before her.)

How do we know they BOTH didn't call 911?

Also, the mother was at work in another town, so maybe she thought her daughter should call bc her 911 call would be routed locally & receive a faster response. The police were there within FOUR MINUTES, which seems like an awesome response time to me.

Upon receiving her daughter's call, the mother reportedly left work immediately to drive home. Maybe all that was in her mind was to get home ASAP to help her kids.

I don't find this part of the story suspicious or a red flag of parentification. I find the claim of the 14yo making dinner 6 out of 7 days last week (if true) to be more worrisome.

Sorrell, it does stand out, but upon reflection there could be many reasons why mom told her to call 911...

a) Mom is at work, has only a landline phone and wants to get out of there fast without staying tied to a phone

b) Mom is at work, and doesn't want to be on a cell phone while driving / has poor coverage where she is / dead battery

c) Mom is going to be calling others to come to the home / supervisor to explain her sudden absence - with her phone

d) 911 will know exactly where the call originates if the daughter makes the call, thereby ensuring fast response...

I agree - if mom is already gone early am, and the girls are having to prepare dinner every night - where does mom work, what is her profession, and when does she spend time with these kids? She is asking too much of them at this age.

My condolences to all who know them, there will be lots of recovery ahead. Warm wishes to all, and RIP Dora.

Maybe the mother called 911 too. If she did not I find that odd.

You just heard a crazed killer stabbed one of your daughters to death so you tell the OTHER daughter that is still in the house to call 911 and you just drive home without calling yourself and/or telling your coworkers to call 911 and get the police to your house too!?

Sorry but that would make no sense! Obviously one could NOT be sure that the daughter could make the call (the crazed killer on the loose could attack her before she had the chance) and you would absolutely call again yourself!

Those details indicate a cold-blooded, premeditated killing.

Well planned, savage, and merciless. This definitely belongs in adult court.

Officials released the victim's name today. I found out several hours ago & I still feel lightheaded & in shock. I know both of these girls, the 11yo victim & her 14yo sister, accused of murder.
I'm literally shell shocked. Jaw on the floor. Disbelief. OMG.
