I also hope that the 12 yo is getting some pretty intense therapy, although I doubt he will grow up to be a productive, law abiding citizen. This whole case just makes me sick. Any word on how the rescued baby is doing?

These small mean people are not going to do well in prison. I am going to hold out some hope for the 12 year old who was actively taught to be cruel to someone so defenseless-tough to escape that whole pack mentality when you are somewhat defenseless yourself. I wish he could be monitored for 35-40 years however...

This reminds me a little bit of poor Sylvia Likens. The psychology behind incidents like this is interesting because, at least in the case of Sylvia, the children involved did horrendous things to her and the after school activity in the neighborhood was to go torture Sylvia. So many people participated in her torture and ultimately death yet they almost all went on to live 'normal' lives. Group think can be a very powerful condition - certainly not an excuse by any means. Then in some cases all parties involved are just nuts.

You know what really scares me? People like this are out there and how do we know who and where they are? Do we really know everyone who lives on our street? I just cannot begin to imagine the horror. Sometimes, when I hear of things such as this, I just want to take my kids and hide from the world! How dare anyone treat another human like this!

This is horrible. People can be so mean that's it just unbelievable. IMO they should also be charged with the death of the baby she was carrying. As for the neighbor what a loser to see the abuse and not call LE. Where was her sister during all of this? I guess she never called her or checked on her? So many questions! This is just too much for me to understand how cruel people can be.

With every passing year, our culture becomes more permissive and people grow up with less and less for a moral compass. You get what you reward. We've rewarded a permissive society, so ...

The 12 yr old, after only 60 days detention, would be long out by now(and 14 I assume). Seems hard to believe.

As for how such a thing could happen.....group mentality. People tend to do things in a group that they wouldn't do alone.

Thank god Michelle could die in prison. There is no point of releasing her when she gets to be 80.

These stories make me sick.

I don't know if I could stomach a film about her ordeal. Just reading the TruTV entry about her was bad enough. It is amazing what the human body can endure. What they did to her is just unbelievable.

Something I would like to address which always bugs me a little bit: People are always saying 'what is the world coming to' or make comments about what is happening to society, etc but I really don't think it is all that different. There are some external factors like more gang violence, more guns on the street which have lead to higher homicide rates but as far as crime itself in one form or another I don't think this generation is any differnet. What has changed is exposure. We are more aware of crimes now due to all the different media outlets. Sylvia was tortured to death in the 60's. This woman was tortured to death in 2008. The Bloody Countess tortured and murdered hundreds of girls during the 1400's.

IL woman sentenced to 45 years in torture killing of pregnant woman

Posted on February 5, 2010 at 3:18 PM

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- An Illinois woman was sentenced to 45 years in prison for the murder of a pregnant, developmentally impaired mother. Police say the victim was beaten, burned and used for target practice.

Thirty-seven-year-old Michelle Riley pleaded guilty in October to first-degree murder in the death of 29-year-old Dorothy Dixon.

The sentence imposed Friday in Madison County Circuit Court was the maximum allowed in a deal reached between defense and prosecutors.

Both sides labeled the victim's death horrific, but Riley's attorney argued for a 30-year sentence, saying others took part in the torture.

Before being sentenced, Riley apologized, saying she wished she could turn back the clock.

I wish that I could thank your update 100 times, TM. I want to copy/paste it and send it to the bio mom in NY who was just picked up for murdering her poor disabled 23 year old.

Who and where is the father of the 1 year old? And, do we know who has him now?

I told myself not to click on this. I knew it would upset me, but I had no idea how much! My precious sister is handicapped and many times I won't comment on cases like this for fear of going off the deep end. I will just say, this makes me rethink my anti death penalty stance, and I would love to be present when their final judgement is given.

No offense to any of the posters, I respect all of your opinions. I am glad that you shared them. This entire story/thread makes me want to vomit. I could barely read it. I am so disturbed by this, that I think my only comment will be the following. I hope that this one-year old child has no memories of this. I hope that he has a wonderful life surrounded by a loving family who will take care of him, properly. I think everyone else involved in this fiasco is a lost cause. May the mother rest in peace and watch over her child from above.
