I google before I start a thread

hope not double !

from all related to each other, 3 months and 16 years old were killed and two more teens were injured when a fire broke out about 4 a.m. Sunday in the second-story of a coach house

bottle rockets on a porch where the fire originated, but it wasn’t known if they sparked the blaze.

I would kinda think that might be it!!

some are now reporting 6 deceased?

We could be talking about two different things here.

A rocket is a firework with a long stick. You use the stick to stand the rocket in a glass bottle and light the firework. The bottle helps to direct the firework in a general direction, ie away from people, because of its ability to set fire to things and inflict chemical burns.

Skyrocket - Wikipedia

However a bottle rocket also seems to be a home made device using plastic drinks bottles, water and compressed air. These are also often referred to as water rockets. There doesn't seem to be anything incendiary about them.

Since reports mention the rockets on the porch it seems likely that the first type is what is being referred to.

When we used to have Guy Falkes night, we used to stick rockets in the ground.
And do you call a coach old stables where stage coaches overnighted?

When we used to have Guy Falkes night, we used to stick rockets in the ground.

When I was a kid we used to use glass milk bottles because they were heavy enough not to fall over and of course were non-flammable. We were always concerned about just sticking them in the ground because of a neighbour who did that and had a lucky escape when the rocket didn't take off properly and exploded about 20 feet off the ground.

In those days rockets (indeed all fireworks sold to the public) were much smaller and less powerful than those being imported from China now.

And do you call a coach old stables where stage coaches overnighted?

I don't know about the stables specifically but the lodging complete with stabling was called a coaching inn. The staff who looked after the horses were called ostlers, and it's just struck me that that must be linguistically connected to 'ostelry, or rather hostelry.

A coach is a secondary home at the back of a primary home. We called them alley homes in the suburb of Chicago where I used to live.

Devastating news.

Deeply saddens my heart.

Ah, in a domestic context the town houses of the upper classes had a separate range of buildings at the back. They were effectively separate streets called a mews where horses and carriages were kept and where the related staff lived above the stables.

Where are the parents? Were there any adults in the house at the time?

Im Canada some Churches still have Coach houses. No clue why they are called that. You can tell they were actually homes at one time. My church now uses as a hall rental and in the summer the daycare.

The death toll has risen to 10 -

Eight bodies were discovered Sunday after firefighters put out the fire. Two more victims, both 14, later died at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital, said Natalia Derevyanny, a Cook County Bureau of Administration spokeswoman.

The fire started on the second floor of a coach house in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood, fire officials said. Those same officials said there were no smoke detectors in the home ...

Meanwhile, the building owner and his attorney have told local media the home did have smoke detectors.

Horrible. Those poor firefighters and first responders aas well. :(

I think some parents need to be charged with gross negligence. All of those children...3 and 5 yr olds and a tiny baby left alone in a home with no adults and no smoke detectors! Babies!
