scm, I think I gave you the impression that "I" didn't believe it was mental illness, I didn't mean to imply that. I truly believe this woman was mentally ill. I just couldn't believe her bail would be set that high, if authorities felt she was mentally ill. Did I explain it right?

Only thing I can think of...crack and crazy...that would cause such a violent attack on that baby. 11 times!!! Unbelievable that a mother could do such a thing to begin with...but 11 times?!?!

Does anyone know what kind of relationship the mother had with the girl's dad?

Maybe she wanted to hurt him.

According to this article women often murder their children as part of suicide because they see their children as extensions of themselves.

Women who kill their children are also more likely to be seen as mentally ill rather that criminal (as fathers are seen). The theory behind this, according to the article, is society sees children as possessions belonging to the mother.

A mother who kills someone elses child is seldom seen sympathetically. Or as mentally ill or sick.

A Waukegan woman who stabbed her 6-year-old daughter to death in 2008 was sentenced to 25 years in prison Wednesday in Lake County Circuit Court.

Nelly Vasquez-Salazar, 27, pleaded guilty Dec. 13 to stabbing her daughter, Evelyn Vasquez, 11 times in the neck, face and arms on April 7, 2008...

Police said Vasquez-Salazar told them she thought her daughter had been possessed by a demon because she had recently begun sleepwalking.
