IL IL - Fay Rawley, Summum, Fulton County farmer and land owner, 8 Nov 1953

I'm not even sure that you can reopen a closed one.

I don't know if a 53 Caddy had any aluminum in it but I assume it did.

  • #63
Aluminum is very durable in the air but I'm not sure how effective it's protective oxide is when buried in chemical laden soil.

  • #64
I used to live just outside of Summum. It's barely a village.

  • #65
Fulton County Sheriff Virgil Ball made assertions that he "knew" who killed Rawley but never gave up the name as far as I know.

That would not surprise me in any way, shape, or form.

On the flip side of that coin... this small area and its surrounding counties thrives on the rumor mill. Everyone "knew" who killed a young lady around here in the early 90s and people were not shy about voicing their opinions of those people. Someone else confessed to the crime a couple of years ago.

I wasn't born and raised in this area, I moved a few miles outside of Summum when I was 12 and I can remember being told the story of Fay Rawley in school.

I hope that I'm not violating anything in posting this image here.

Here is a map showing an area that I used to spend a lot of time (the house above point A). We used to walk down the lane that is just left of point A. It eventually becomes a beaten path that goes through what used to be woodland and pasture. My friends and I used to walk from that house down that path.. through the tiny path just aside the field and to the convenience store that is in or just outside of Summum.

Although the aerial view doesn't make the trees appear thick and dense, they are.

The area that runs south of Ratcliff Road (The road along where Point A is pinned) is similar, except there are more trees than fields. I can remember that people always dumped a variety of garbage along those woodlands... I'd see remnants of everything from cars to toilets in that stretch of land.

summum-to-radcliff_zps27d328d4.jpg

The map ofcourse shows the driving route.. but was to show a better idea of the landscape surrounding Summum as well.

I apologize in advance if this has violated any rules, please inform me if I have so that I dont repeat.. this is the first time Ive posted images and been so active.

I believe that if this crime took place during the daytime hours, Fay Rawley was driving his car, by force. In this small of an area where gossip runs rampant, had the car been moved during the day and passed through Summum or nearby Astoria... I believe that during the daylight hours, if he passed through town, someone would have noticed if he was not the driver of that car, that being said.. I very much feel like whatever occurred.. he disappeared at night. I'm not sure if he drove himself anywhere in that car, considering that his glasses were found at his home....

Another map of the area.. This time stretching from Point A of East Radcliff Rd to the nearby town of Sheldon's Grove, approximately 11 miles due south of Summum. The road that is highlighted as the route is the road that I used to live on.

buffalo-to-radcliff_zpscf022190.jpg

Looking at the map, the areas to the east of summum are relatively flat and today consist primarily of cornfields. The area far to the East/Southeast tapers off to fields and lakes. I do not believe that Fay Rawley's car or any possible remains are near Route 100. The area along Route 100 floods regularly, both the lakes and the Illinois River. I believe that the other nearby rivers do as well. They often flood massively and I believe that the areas along Route 100.

The route that is highlighted in this map is known by at least two different names. There are many flat areas there.. but there are also many sudden hills, sharp turns, and deep ravines that went back into the trees. I believe that Fay Rawley and/or his car are somewhere between just due north of the dense wooded area near Summum... but no farther south of Sheldon's Grove and no further than Route 100.

I've lived in cities that have a less of a hinky-meter rating than Fulton/Schuyler/Cass/Brown Counties in Illinois has...

acid on a car is pretty serious vandalism

I'm leaning towards the son being 'collateral' damage - in other words, he discovered something about his dad's murder & was going to blow the whistle

is there any info as to any other siblings and/or the mother in this family? it'd be helpful to know if they were ever investigated or offered any theories

Someone created a facebook page for Fay Rawley, it simply lists him as a public figure with a handful of "likes" and just says.. "Where is he?" The creator of the page remains apparently unknown.

A woman, nee Rawley, claiming to be a granddaughter commented on the page, criticizing the creator of the page for misspelling Rawley's name and threatening to sue them for making it. This person never claimed to be Fay Rawley.

Thanks Cyan - I remember when that was known as the Republic of Forgottonia.

It would be great for someone to find Mr. Rawley after all these years.
I'd think the most likely place to hide a car and body would be in a pond, lake or river. The area doesn't seem densely populated.

It's not densely populated.. but, forgive me the few local to me when I say this... People around here have some behavorial tendencies that are rather.. Clannish. And many people here are silly vengeful - and frighteningly so.

I don't believe his car to be in a river... Not a local river anyway. Spoon River and the Illinois River are both heavily utilized for recreation and business (tugboats, barges, and fishing are still a huge way of life here) and flood/descend often. This area is also heavily populated with local hunters and those who come from hundred miles of miles away during season to be here. I wonder if it was during that era as well?

The Illinois River connects the Great Lakes with the Mississippi River and then the Gulf of Mexico as part of the St. Lawrence Seaway System so it is actually one of the major waterways of the world.

Stan,
On page 1, you asked about Fay's age. Per census records, Fay Rawley was born in October of 1898; making him 55 years old in 1953. There weren't many Rawleys listed in Fulton County, which makes the hunt easier. The older heads of household were all born in Virginia, as was Fay's grandfather, leading me to believe the men were Fay's cousins. Note that only the 1900 Census lists Fay's grandfather, Tilman, as being born in West Virginia.

Some of the younger relatives are possible sources of information for you or anyone else local. I live almost 1,000 miles away. I've posted Fay's direct line in this message. I'll put his possible cousins in a separate message.

1860 Census
Only one Rawley Family listed in Fulton County. Fay's grandfather, Tillman, age 17, not listed with this family. I didn't check the other counties because the 1860 Index (that I have access to; I don't have an Ancestry.com subscription) only lists Head of Household.

HoH, James 53, Job: Blacksmith, born NJ; Wife,
Rachel 50;
Kids: George 19, Eliza 17, Thomas 15, Joseph 12, Charles 9, Melrose 7, Mary 6, William 4.

*I think Maud Divorced James (he's on 1880 & 1900 census), remarried, and then her 2nd husband died. James is still alive on 1940 census (see below). Since he doesn't appear on the indexes for the 1910 or 1920 censuses, his name was either illegible, he moved to a different county or state and then moved back, or he was in prison.*

A college professor's book of 15 stories, each telling a different true tale, was recently published.

At this link: http://tristatesradio.com/term/fay-rawley

... He doesn't tell us anything we don't already know--except he's made Fay a year older than he actually is/was. Even if someone thinks Fay's birth date (Oct. 1898) is hard to read on the 1900 census (I found its dark ink more legible than most censuses I've seen), Fay was listed as being 1 year old on his last birthday (1899). The 1900 census was conducted in June, so Fay turned 2 in October of that year (4 months later). 1900-2 = born 1898. 1953-1898 = age 55, not 56. Unless they've reinvented math since I graduated decades ago.

At another link:http://tristatesradio.com/post/myths-and-mysteries-illinois

... The author states Fay's girlfriend broke up with him that night, telling him she was going back to her husband. Now that's an interesting revelation.

BTW, where was Fay's wife, Hazel, during the struggle in Fay's house? Had she divorced him? Obtained a legal separation? Gone to visit relatives? I ask because Stan referred to her as Fay's wife, instead of his ex-wife or estranged wife. At some point she married a man named Nitz. I don't know his first name.

Stan, do you have an exact date for the acid on the Cadillac incident? I believe you mentioned it happening a week before Fay disappeared. The bio on the Illinois history website (link posted by someone else here) stated it happened earlier on the same night Fay disappeared. However, they don't give enough details for me to feel certain that info came from a police report.

Thanks to everyone for their contributions to this thread!

Stan,
I just skimmed this thread again. Actually you said the acid had been splashed on Fay's Caddy -- earlier that year, not earlier that week. So, I'm still wondering what the police report said, as to when it happened.

As to the source of the acid--I'm not mechanically adept but I could easily get my hands on some. I don't have a basement or a shed where I live now, but at my old house in the suburbs there was usually one or more old car batteries lurking downstairs. Those things aren't easily deposed of without harming the environment.

In a rural area, I'd bet everybody's barn had an old battery or two from tractors or other farm equipment.

http://chemistry.about.com/od/chemicalcomposition/f/What-Is-Battery-Acid.htm

Batteries for motors are lead-acid types. "Car or automotive battery acid is 30-50% sulfuric acid (H2SO4) in water."

I think the water is a neutralizing agent, but if you drained the battery and let the liquid sit uncovered wouldn't the water evaporate, rendering the acid deadly again? :dunno:

Thanks for your work JWD. According to the link above, the acid was thrown on the car in the summer which, if accurate, would have been months before Rawley's disappearance. I do not know an exact date. It appears that we have some conflicting information regarding the incident unless it happened more than once.

Regarding Rawley's wife, I don't know where she was but it's fairly obvious that she was not living with him. If they were still married then they must have been separated. That's my common sense guess anyway.

My knowledge of the case mostly comes from what's on the internet plus a few tidbits I remember when the case was in the news here more than 50 years ago.

He vanished 60 years ago yesterday but it wasn't known yet, I don't believe.

Rawley and his wife were separated and their divorce actually became final the day after he disappeared, November 9. I just saw that in a local newspaper.
