Luu was last seen in Berwyn, Illinois around 6:30 a.m. on December 15th, 2003 at his home on the 1600 block of Ridgeland Avenue where he lived with his parents, two sister and brother-in-law. Usually he left between 5:45 and 6 a.m. but on this morning he was running late for his 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. shift at Storm Products, an electronics manufacturer, in Woodridge. He had only been working there for about two weeks.

His vehicle, a dark gray 1992 Nissan Maxima with the Illinois license plate number 335 6037, is also missing.
His usual route was west on 16th Street to Harlem Avenue, south onto the Stevenson Expressway to Lemont Road, then on to 101st Street.
This ~20 mile drive crosses the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal twice and the Des Plaines river once.

His employer, Storm Products, reported that Luu never showed up for work, according to relatives and Berwyn Public Safety Director Frank Marzullo.

Luu moved from his native Vietnam to the United States about seven years before his disappearance. He and his family had lived in Berwyn for about fifteen months by the time he went missing. He attended Senn High School and Truman College, and worked at a pizza restaurant for a time before he took the job at Storm Products. Luu is described as a reclusive person with few friends. He didn't own a cellular phone or any credit cards and he didn't have a bank account.

Out of the many cases where people are missing with vehicles, this might be the only one with a complete route that he would have likely taken.
I'm trying to go over and include sources for these cases & verify as best I can ones still missing.

If anyone can find the article by The Life that the doe network mentions here that would be helpful! (The Life (Berwyn, IL) - Jan. 7, 2004) Not sure if it still exists.

Dec 30, 2003

<<“We’ve been to Chicago [where the Luus formerly lived] and we’ve been to Woodridge. We checked the roads to his job, and we have other towns looking,” said Ronald Volanti, deputy public safety director. “We still have a few leads to check out, but so far we don’t know what happened to him.”

Vuong said Luu is the second of three children born to his parents in Vietnam. His father, Ty Luu, ran a wholesale business in what was then South Vietnam and was a soldier for the government. Ty left Vietnam by boat 15 years ago and settled in Chicago, then sent for his wife and children about seven years ago, Vuong said.

The family lived in Uptown while Hiep Luu attended Senn High School and then Truman College, Vuong said. The family moved to Berwyn about 15 months ago. After leaving school, Luu worked in a pizza restaurant for a time, then landed the job in Woodridge two weeks before his disappearance, Vuong said.

Luu has few friends and doesn’t spend time with people outside his family, Vuong said. “He comes home from work and plays on his computer. This is the first time he left home without calling or anything,” Vuong said.>>

In 2008 a sonar scan was done of the Chicago Ship & Sanitary Canal, vehicles were found but I don't know if they were ever checked out or removed. Two of those scans are here and other possible locations for an accident are marked: Hiep T. Luu - 2003 - Google My Maps

This has been sent to a few groups that have been close to that area before searching with sonar.

Vehicle and remains found submerged in Lake Osborne. Identification of remains will need to be confirmed but the vehicle appears to be connected to an old cold case of a missing person from 2003, Hiep Luu.

September 26, 2025

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (WLS) -- Human remains were found in a vehicle that was located during a training exercise Thursday morning in Naperville, police say.

The car was removed from the lake about 3:40 p.m., and identified as a 1992 Nissan Maxima. The vehicle's license plate is connected to an ongoing Berwyn Police Department investigation into the disappearance of Hiep Luu, who was reported missing in 2003, police said.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (WLS) -- Human remains were found in a vehicle that was located during a training exercise Thursday morning in Naperville, police say.

Thank you for sharing.

Chaos Divers was just up there searching for him, they located another person missing since 2001 in Hodgkins IL the same way, also unexpected. This location Hiep was found isn't on the route to his work, I hope more answers are able to be found on why he was there :(

Another article:

"On Thursday just before 11am, divers from the Naperville Fire Department were conducting training exercises in Lake Osborne, located just south of the Naperville Public Safety Campus on Aurora Avenue, when they discovered a submerged vehicle in the southwest portion of the lake.

Naperville Police officers, detectives, and crime scene technicians were called to the scene to assist with the recovery of the vehicle and initiate an investigation. At approximately 3:40pm, the vehicle was removed from the lake and identified as a 1992 Nissan Maxima.

Using the vehicle’s older license plate number, investigators determined that the vehicle was connected to an ongoing Berwyn Police Department investigation into the disappearance of Hiep Luu, reportedly a Vietnamese immigrant, who was reported missing in 2003. He was 21 years of age at the time. Suspected human remains were located inside the vehicle but have not yet been identified. The DuPage County Coroner’s Office was called to assist with the investigation and will handle identification of the deceased.

Naperville Police divers returned to the scene Friday to continue the search for additional evidence.

The death investigation is being led by the Naperville Police Department in cooperation with the Berwyn Police Department, which continues to handle the missing person’s case.

Anyone with information that may assist in the death investigation is encouraged to contact the Naperville Police Investigations Division at (630) 420-4138.

Anyone with information relevant to the missing person case should contact the Berwyn Police Investigations Division at (708) 795-2160."

BBM.

This is crazy, I can't say the number of times I have gone past this on the main road and he was most likely in there this whole time. Tragic. Another case to show you how many missing persons and vehicles could be right there in local waters and everyone has no idea. It is LITERALLY right behind the town's police station and fire station!
