I cannot remember if it has been posted previously, Jake filed bankruptcy in 2019. In my personal opinion, that's when he started planning to go off the grid, and what better time to do it than when everyone is wearing masks and social distancing?
There's a rumor that LE confiscated his electronics, not that he left them behind. Maybe that was when he decided to enact the plan.

There are no public records or any indication that Jake filed BK. That definitely appears to have been misinformation/mistake on the part of one member in the FB group.

United Airlines Executive Still Missing, 55 Days Later | One Mile at a Time
The basics of United executive’s disappearance
49-year-old Jake Cefolia is United Airlines’ Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales. He has worked at the airline since 2007, and leads a team of up to 725 people.

Unfortunately Cefolia was last seen on Thursday, August 6, and was reported missing on Saturday, August 8. His car was found at the Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve, not far from his home in Elmhurst. Police and volunteers searched that area, but didn’t find any clues.

I’m going to reshare and add a few quotes. Always nice to have these over time in case the article disappears as has happened in other missing cases. So what is new to me is that he missed his night with the kids. I suppose they didn’t spend the night there on the 6th. I guess that the night missed would have been on the 7th. I’m going to quote and copy my timeline and add the night with kids.

Just watched the story. Things I found interesting were his ex wife saying she had just heard he broke up with his girlfriend this week. And the comment where she told police “he lived in elmhurst” (past tense) .

Personally, I still say the patch reporter who was interviewed for the story is making a bigger deal than was meant about going off grid. I think the original quote was meant in a way to disconnect from technology, not disappear. I’ll see if I can find it.

ETA: found the original mention of going off grid...

She also told police that Cefolia "fantasized about going off the grid," meaning having no electronics or communications with others, the report said.

Confirmed the investigation but no charges .... what could he be under investigation for?

It wouldn’t be something he did to someone else, or there would be “charges”, charges the other individual would request. But if investigation was related to his kids would he still be allowed to see them? And if it were kid related, Elmhurst PD wouldn’t be the investigating agency it would be Child Protective Services, right? Can’t be anything like insider trading because that would be federal. So what would it be and how does it take so long to investigate? Unless maybe it involves sending data off to FBI to analyze? Maybe a reporter should ask if Elmhurst PD has requested aide from any outside agencies in their “investigation”.

Additionally, if the investigation led to Jake going “off grid”, how’d he know about it beforehand? Was he questioned, searched, etc? What type of FOIA requests would reveal this?

Jumping off your post, we also don't know what Jake might have packed into his vehicle before he left to the gas station that day. His phone and Apple watch her found at his house, according to NBC 5 report. Did he pack anything for survival? We don't know what the investigation entails, but might there be any items missing from the home that were key to the investigation?

From the 911 call clip in the video, his ex-wife said "He started ghosting people at work, not showing up for meetings." When did that start? Was she referring to the Friday before his disappearance?

Also from the video, there is a pretty good shot of the front door, and a doorbell camera is visible. It appears to be a Ring brand video doorbell. Was it operational? If so, was the footage analyzed? Did Jake have any other cameras around the exterior of his home that might have captured other angles of his movements that day, and what items he might have taken with him?

Exactly!!! And what about the neighbor that thought he saw him around noon ...after the gas video?

Is his passport accounted for? The story said that ex had someone check United to see if he flew anywhere, but what about other airlines? I assume those were checked? Private plane travel?
Does anyone (his family or friends) know what he was under investigation for? Did he? Is that why no one is making this super public with no public pleas, rewards, or info? Are they somehow protecting him in their minds? What about girlfriend no 2? Was she surprised about gf #1?

Do we know why the coworker was at Jakes home two days in a row? Why would the coworker be there on a day and near a time Jake already had a scheduled appointment with his realtor?

Why would the coworker go there again on Friday and leave a note on the door? What prompted him to go there twice in such a short amount of time?

When did the coworker become aware Jake was not working on Friday?

Can LE rule the coworker out as possibly harming Jake?

I don't know that I would physically return to a coworkers house on a day they missed work when I saw him or her loaded the evening before. I'd assume they were nursing a hangover and try reaching them the following day.

There's more to the story here.....

I've been thinking about this case recently, and I see there's still no answers. I give about equal probability to death by misadventure, self harm, or voluntary missing. I really don't think foul play is involved here but without much else to go on can't rule it out.

While I agree that a 1 mile Square area park is not as much to search as a whole national Park, it's still a fair bit of territory to search without a specific starting point. Without a ton of detail about the search parameters, it's hard to know whether he could still be in there and the body not found as in the case with many missing persons.

I also think his extreme intoxication played a role into this. It could've been a factor in having an accident in the park if he did indeed go hiking, or a strong indicator of a mental state that was on the verge of a breakdown. I know when my drinking got really out of control, I stopped calling people at work back, missed meetings, and I did have one coworker who was so concerned about me she tracked me down to the hotel where I was staying on an out-of-town trip.

I do hope that if he chose to disappear, his plan was successful and he is OK. If not, I hope he is found soon so his family can get the answers they deserve.

@Kittybunny I don't know where you got Waterfall Glenn Forest Preserve being 1 square mile (640 acres). It's much larger and is 2500 acres.

Like you, I'm equal on all possibilities.

There's still a lot of unanswered questions. Was the Friday day off work a scheduled or unscheduled day off? Was the corporate event he missed Friday or Saturday? Was the corporate event being held near the forest preserve?

If this was an accident, it's possible he may be found as the leaves fall off the trees and visibility is greater in the FP.

I have felt this way as well for a long time,wasn’t he just in Japan? and the type of job he had would make travel undetected easily.

Cubby, Thank you so much for clarifying the size of the preserve. I read from another post up thread that it was one square mile. Definitely more area to search.

I don't think the past tense is incorrect as the home was for sale and transferred to a trust. Earlier she also said he "works for United" (present tense). It's kind of hard to draw conclusions from the soundbites used in these types of stories without their full context.
