A Lake County judge told prosecutors and defense attorneys Thursday that he would like some indication soon as to whether Demetries Thorpe will accept a plea deal for allegedly murdering a 5-month-old baby last year, the Lake County News-Sun is reporting.

While he stopped short of setting a firm deadline for a negotiated plea - which he noted that he has the authority to do - Judge Daniel Shanes suggested he would like to know whether the case was going to trial by the next status date, which he set for July 1.

A northern Illinois man has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in last year’s slaying of his girlfriend’s 5-month-old son. The boy was never found.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s office says in a news release that prosecutors agreed with Tuesday’s plea to seek a sentence for Demetrius Thorpe that is no longer than 35 years in state prison. Thorpe returns for sentencing on Sept. 2.

A Zion man was sentenced to 30 years in prison Tuesday for murdering his former girlfriend’s 5-month-old baby last summer and tossing the body in a dumpster.
