Dad guilty of falsifying shooter's permit app, will be jailed.

Police had reports Crimo III had threatened his family, and that police had received reports of the boy threatening to commit suicide, and that he 'had expressed an interest in committing a mass shooting' in 2014 or 2015.

Under the plea deal, Crimo Jr. is admitting he was aware his son 'was a substantial risk to others' when he signed Crimo III's FOID card application, Rinehart said.

Sorry, @Puzzles8 , missed your post!

Robert Crimo Jr (the father) has just accepted a plea deal which includes 60 days of jail time.

"By sending him to jail it sends a strong message to others" - from press conference going on now.

JMO
60 days is rather a symbolic punishment IMO.

But better than nothing.

RIP to all innocent victims :(

He got a pretty good deal. He should also be banned from owning or using a firearm for the rest of his life. JMO

Why the delay?
3 years after the crime.

Crimo was expected to plead guilty to seven counts of murder and 48 counts of aggravated battery with a firearm at the hearing, according to The Associated Press. Instead, the 23-year-old rejected the agreement, which would have sentenced him to life.

Many prayers for the victim's families today. The victim's families were expecting to speak in the courtroom day. I can't imagine their angst, pain and disappointment tonight. They had prepared for this day and I'm sure had rehearsed their statements for weeks. This would have been been such an important step in finding closure.

The two year anniversary of the massacre is next week.

"This new development is a huge blow to the families who had expected to close this chapter before the two-year mark of the shooting which is about a week away.
Attorney Antonio Romanucci who represents some of the victims of the shooting called it pure evil.
"This was a calculated effort on his part to continue the suffering that our clients are going through," Romanucci said. "There are many attorneys here today representing clients and we know, we feel also the suffering they are going through, the hardship of what's happening and it's absolutely disgusting.""

What a horrible, evil person. He stands to gain nothing by doing this.

He gains control. I think that’s what he wants. And he will start firing lawyers which will delay the trial even more, so he will control the process.

That’s all he can control, though. Nothing will prevent him being found guilty and spending the rest of his life in prison. That’s the inevitable conclusion for this disaster. Enjoy your trial, buddy.

Crimo, who last year appeared in court in a wheelchair on one occasion and carried a copy of the Quran on another, told Rossetti that he had not meant to "stare down" the victims and their families when looking behind him during his hearings.

“When I look into the gallery, I am merely looking at my family,” he said, according to the News-Sun. “I truly feel sorry for everyone involved.”

I haven't followed this case in a long time. I guess I figured it would be done and dusted and he'd be in prison by now. This isn't a whodunit.

That sure doesn't pass the sniff test, does it?

Outraged family members of victims described his behavior as “evil and manipulative.” An attorney representing Kevin and Irina McCarthy’s family said it “was nothing more than a revictimization of that family and every family that has endured this tragedy.”

“It is evident to the court there was no use of coercion, deceit or intimidation to prevent the defendant from speaking to attorney,” said Rossetti, adding that he was “fully aware of his Miranda rights and his right to counsel.”

Jury selection is expected to take a week or longer, followed by a trial that could last five or six weeks.

...
Just moments before the trial for the alleged gunman behind the mass shooting at a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park was about to begin, a plea change was announced in the case.

"Let me be clear, this was not a negotiation, this was not a deal," Lake County State's Attorney Eric Rinehart said during a press conference following the hearing. "He made a free decision to plead guilty to every single count. He received nothing in exchange for this plea today."
...
"This is a final verdict on 69 counts," Rinehart said. "Let me be clear, if we had gone all the way to trial ... and the jury walked back into the room and delivered 69 counts of guilty it would be the exact same legal effect... the finality of it is the same."
...
That means Crimo will be sentenced for the charges he pleaded guilty to on April 23, the judge in the case ruled Monday.
The possible penalty carried for the charges against him includes seven natural life sentences and no possibility of parole. Rinehart added that victims will be given the option to speak at the sentencing hearing with "victim impact statements."

My heart goes out to the affected families and friends, they have been in limbo too long. Hopefully this will help bring closure.

Thank goodness, but still what a waste. At least the trial hadn't started.

SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb called the ruling “outrageous,” arguing that it undermines the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA), a federal law designed to shield firearms manufacturers from liability for criminal misuse of their products
