At least 20 people were shot, one fatally, in south suburban Willowbrook early Sunday morning, fire officials said.

Battalion Chief Joe Ostrander with the Tri-State Fire Protection District said the shooting took place about 12:30 a.m. on Route 83 near Honeysuckle Rose Lane. A large group was gathered for a Juneteenth celebration in a parking lot that turned violent, witnesses said.

Fire officials said at least 10 were shot.

A DuPage County Sheriff's Office official said later Sunday morning that 20 had been shot, one fatally.

"It was supposed to be like a Juneteenth celebration; we just started hearing shooting, so we dropped down until they stopped. They just kept going. After that, we literally scattered away," witness Markeshia Avery said.

Two of those shot are in critical condition, while others suffered what fire officials are calling "graze wounds."

"We were all just out, and, next thing you know shots just kept going off; everybody ran, and it was chaos," another witness said.

Witnesses say a Juneteenth celebration was happening in the parking lot at the time of the shooting.

At least 12 ambulances responded to the scene, Ostrander said.

Ten patients were transported to four hospitals with injuries ranging from graze wounds to more serious gunshot wounds, and two people were in critical condition, Joe Ostrander, battalion chief of the Tri-State Fire Protection District said earlier

A Juneteenth weekend celebration held in a Willowbrook strip mall parking lot was becoming a tradition among members of the Hinsdale Lake Terrace apartments.

Barbecue chicken, a card table, red plastic cups for drinking. Even DuPage County sheriff’s deputies were taking part in the festivities as the party moved into the early Sunday morning.

Residents of the nearby apartment complex had held similar Juneteenth parties in the lot for the previous two years, Reed said. It had always been peaceful.

“It was chaotic. Chaos, pure chaos,” said Nayetta Reed, 43, who said she was in the crowd as gunfire rang out but was uninjured.

This year, though, the crowd size had become “excessive,” Reed said, estimated there were around 200 or 300 people.

“Since Juneteenth has come about, we’ve been celebrating. And usually the sheriffs are out here with us. It’s very controlled, it’s peaceful,” Reed said. “I don’t know what happened. I really don’t know what happened last night. It just went left.

“We’ll probably never do another one,” she said.

Witnesses suspect the number of people shot is higher than officially reported. Some people with minor gunshot wounds have avoided going to the hospital, Reed said.
